We had only hit the tip of beach walking last year so this year we could take the time to wander.
The locals have many different activities on the beach side of the malecon. We watched a beach volleyball set, fishermen, rollerblading, biking etc.
It is a lot to explore. We were not in a real shopping mood, but the people are friendly, even the tourists. Plus there are many food cart vendors as well.
We found that the real shopping area is a few blocks down towards the town. They were brightly lit (the ones with a lot of windows) and there were some big name shops; such as Coach or name designers [I can't truly remember - as I said I wasn't into shopping 'Americano'.
