The Malecon is the heart of La Paz. There is always something going on there. During the day there are joggers, walkers and cyclists enjoying the sea breezes. In the evenings and on weekends the families come out to enjoy people-watching, exercise and perhaps a meal at one of the many restaurants all along the sea-front. During Carnival it is where the action is, with stalls for eating and buying, and grandstands for entertainment. La Paz wouldn't be La Paz without the Malecon.

Probably the most impressive part of La Paz is the Malecon. Upon first site you feel you are in an authentic Mexican town....and you are. Like many coastal Mexican pueblas, they pave the walk along the sea for their residents to enjoy meeting their friends, stop for a bite, roller blade, jog, or just walk. It's a wonderful thing, and it is particularly wonderful here in La Paz to do just that. Busy all the time, it really comes to life at night, completely buzzing with chatty locals, getting their exercise while socializing. It is so much fun to just sit and watch it all go by. They've made all sorts of improvements to the Malecon....more whimsical sculptures, safer sidewalks, recycle trash cans in the forms of sea creatures, better lighting, etc. There are palapas on the beach for daytime sunbathing, but the water is not that appealing with all the boats right there in the water.

Its a great place to meet friends just walking on a Friday night and a great place for everyone to ride their bicycles. There is lots of artwork along the walk. Coconut palms that will supply you fruit in the winter, great place to launch a Kayak too but you better have good skills if you do this in the winter you fight the north wind. If there is a festival its happening on and near the malecon its the hub.

While the gift shops and delicious food make this a great stop during the day, it just comes alive at night. I felt very safe and loved La Cantina, Catrina, and the Jungle.
