“If you have time”
Reviewed May 30, 2012

If you didn't have a reservation somewhere in La Paz and your not tired check out other places that are not on the Malecon. The lobby is cute with some great photo's of long ago. Pool is chilly even when it is 32 C outside. When you ask for pool towels be prepared to wait awhile they come from somewhere far away. The rooms are plain and stuffy and very noisy. One small towel each and you share a face cloth. And if you walk out with one of them the girls that clean the room get charged for them. They let you know that on a big card in the washroom. The mattresses and pillows very well used. We did check out other places at that end of town but this was the best after driving all day.
Now the good thing about Hotel Perla is the Restaurant they have. GREAT BREAKFAST and GREAT SERVICE!! The rest of the hotel staff should take lessons.

Room Tip: There is none.

Hotel Perla first of all, is decorated like an upscale Holiday Inn. Like most older hotels it has a history and maybe got a facelift in the late 80s, early 90s? The lobby area before you get to the rooms has a great selection of photos of the hotel during the 1950s and even before then, and some really cool books for you to peruse about the area. The hotel is also located in La Paz, which is a VERY, VERY different city from Cabo San Lucas. It is older, not flashy, and more like a regular city in a foreign country, and the folks are doing their own thing and it is reflected in their attitude, so I don't know why people are upset with the indifferent behavior. The locals do not want nor need to cater to every turista's need like the superresorts in Cabo, I think there is a Papas and Beer down the malecon but it is nothing like the Rosarito one. La Paz is more like a Mexican's city, and I mean that with the utmost admiration. It feels like it is their city. So if you are looking to be stimulated at every corner with tourist attractions, or you want to feel like you are on a Disneyworld resort, you will be disappointed. It is lovely just to wake up in the morning and see residents jogging along the malecon. You can also enjoy a morning coffee and read the paper down the block at a cafe. It is a lot slower and quieter early in the week and less touristy. You can see all of this sitting above the pool on the malecon side. The hotel rooms that have the malecon view are the larger suites reserved for larger families. The pool is not heated so we didn't bother jumping in during January.

That said, on Thursday nite and thru Saturday weekend there is a band that plays downstairs and they will play all night...even if you stay in the quiet sections of the hotel on the side facing away from the malecon, you may hear a little bit of the band, but it is possible to get some sleep if you have a room that is NOT an ocean view (sounds crazy, but true). I think the other poster on here was right-- they do play until 3:30am.

The malecon, from Thursday nights til Saturday nights have bands playing, so it is extremely noisy. This does not change. The best days to stay at Perla if you are looking for peace and quiet and you happen to be in La Paz is any other day of the week. The hotel management knows this, it is futile to try to complain. If their band doesn't keep you up, the other clubs and bands down the Malecon will! BTW, some of the cover bands at the clubs down the street play on and on into the night and the music gets worse because the musicians will be three sheets to the wind by 4am. If you remember that vintage Tom and Jerry cartoon where all the Tomcats come out to play crazy jazz because the little girl went out for the day...or imagine a 33rpm LP played at 45rpm...you get the picture. It may be a nightmare for some, or a very interesting cultural experience!

Internet wi-fi access is in the lobby only, they also have a PC available.

Room Tip: Stay here Sunday night to Wednesday night, and get a room on the highest floor, that does not face t...

I have stayed in Hotel Perla twice in the past several months. The best part about it is the location in the middle of the malecon. The rooms come complete with a refrigerator. It is near several very good restaurants. Be warned that some rooms might be noisy because it is near several late night eating and entertainment establishments. If you can score a room near the pool, it will be very quiet.

Room Tip: Rooms around the pool.

This hotel is in a great location and looks fine, but it is impossible to sleep there because they have an extremely noisy club in the basement that will drive anyone utterly crazy unless you are deaf. I called the reception 6 times and each time I told them to turn the music off to let us sleep and both the clerk and the manager promised to do so immediately - each time, but never did. At 3.30 am we got fed up and left the hotel. I hated this hotel because they do not let you sleep and they repeatedly lie you in the face. The sound proofing is of course non-existent. With sound proofing they could have a noisy club and hotel guests simultaneously - not exactly rocket science to most people, but when is this hotel management going to get it? I strongly recommend you go elsewhere and ignore this horrible hotel.

Hotel Perla is an ok place to stay. I think that the location is how they can charge the $100 room rate. Pool area is nice, but rooms are non-exceptional. Something a little off about how the staff treats customers, on the edge of indifference.
The continental breakfast ticket is nice, for a coffee and some toast at the restaurant next door. Wireless internet was slightly weak.
I do like how I can step out from the hotel lobby, and the waterfront is across the street. Daytime view is a nice beach area, evenings with a wonderfully active malecon filled with people and vendors.
Valet parking is free and nice to have a secure place for your vehicle, a major plus to a very busy area. On street parking is difficult at times.

Stood at this hotel while on a fishing trip. Good beach front location, Just need to cross the street and the water is right there. Its centered along the main stip area. Walking distance to restaurants, bars, and other businesses of interest. Wasn't really here to site see, so can't comment on that. Wireless net is free, although i did have trouble in the room. Kept having to reset it on my mac. In the lobby area can get good reception though, even though it still may need to be reset a few times as well. The pool is small n quaint but does the trick if you don't want to be in the baja water. rooms were clean and even had a mini fridge in the ones i saw (doors were open when being cleaned).

Younger crowd (teens) is out in early evening when temps start to cool, while the older (mid 20s+) crowd seems to come out around 10p. Its feels safe to walk the beach front area where its crowded, but venturing beyond 2 blocks or so may start to seem sketchy as it gets desolate and dark though there are a few bars in the area as well.

The hotel has an adjacent club that gets busy on fridays and saturdays, As front desk for drink tickets if they don't give you one. Cost is $5 and shorts are ok for admission. The adjacent restaurant is good as well and has tasty mahi mahi ceviche.

Spa wasn't working at time which is why I gave it bad remark.

Room Tip: You can ask for Ocean front room. They will also serve food to you by the pool or on the veranda.

I have been to this hotel 5 times, and am booked again next week. I enjoy fishing and relaxing in La Paz, and this place has it all.

It is not a five star hotel by any means. It is simple, but classic. Clean, very attentive staff and help. The location is the number one place to be - Right on the boardwalk across from the water. Central to all La Paz has to offer. Jaccuzi does not work, and the pool slightly cool, but for this part of the world, a really great place. With some effort, you can stay for $60/night. Rooms with the view of Malecon are slightly noisy, as the main street is busy until very late. I am a five star hotel kind of a guy. This part of the world is not the place for a five start resort. IF you have cause to be needing a nice place to stay in the Central part of La Paz - you will not ge dissappointed.

I have fished all over, and enjoy La Paz more than Cabo. If you like to fish , charter a boat with David Jones of Fisherman's Fleet. They are close to hotel, have great captains, and we always catch fish. David Jones can book you a room at La Perla for $60!!!!! Have the time of your life!
