If you are a foodie and want to know where your wine comes from this is the tour for you. Their wines are demanded in wine countries so it is good.

Our group traveled to Santo Tomas at the end of a full day and we were prepared to run in and out, maybe after a quick sampling of a wine known to a couple people in our group. We stayed for almost two hours, enjoying the great afternoon sun, an amazing breeze that cooled us off even on a 90 degree day, and panoramic views of the valley.

We got lucky in that the bodega normally closes at 5 and having arrived about 4:30, we were able to also sample and purchase food products from a pair of local women who had set up a small stand just outside the entrance to the main building. The women offered homemade empanadas with mango, strawberry and apple fillings (all delicious) and a wide array of sauces and spreads, including mango lime, mango chipotle, chimichurri...and really good olives. I don't know how often they are there, but if you see them, try everything. The quality off the product is excellent and the flavors proved to be very pleasant surprises.

In terms of wine tasting, I was able to sample about five wines, all quite good, though my favorite was a cab sav, followed by a Syrah. The winery produces grapes in three different valleys and the variety of wines is unusual for the area, I think they mentioned 35 varieties. Since they only export by mail order, you won't find these wines at your local Costco - at least not yet. We went to several other wineries, but the selection was largest at Santo Tomas and the wines were really quite tasty.

Of course, sipping it on the terrace of the the bodega under a comforting shade, our eyes filled with nothing but sun-drenched hills, vineyards and olive groves dancing in the light wind, it would have taken some dedication to a gripe to be able to complain at all.

The most challenging part of the experience is driving down to Ensenada (about 90 min from TIjuana), a relatively easy experience except for the Tijuana part. I recommend a Mexico GPS program of some sort, pointed towards Ensenada. Shortly after the final toll booth, look for HWY 3 and head east...from there it may get tougher but locals are quite friendly and eager to see tourists return; don't be afraid to ask for help - or too surprised if it is wrong...

Beautiful tasting room and patio. Helpful staff. I showed up the day after a large party so I got to taste some of the reserve wines.
