We stayed at Statia Lodge for the last few nights of a multi-island tour.

Our inbound flight from St Maarten was late (note to folks flying on WinAir – make sure to stay close to the gate at the airport – they don’t really make announcements for boarding, etc. They will collect the boarding passes about ½ hour to 20 minutes before the flight, and then just kind of open the boarding gate. The info for WinAir on the airport monitors may not be correct either). Scotty was at the airport in Statia to meet us. He asked if we wanted a scooter (which was included with our room) or a rental car (for a additional per day charge). We told him a scooter was fine, but we didn’t need to get it till the next morning. It was a pretty short drive to the Statia Lodge.

When we arrived, we were at first a bit taken aback that our cottage was the one immediately past the gate (we don’t usually like being so close to the road), but then we realized that there is almost no traffic on the road anyhow. . The property is lit very nicely at night – you can find your way around, but it is still dark enough for a great view of the stars. Scotty offered us a ‘welcome beer’ and we sat out on the terrace by the pool and looked at the stars and chatted with Scotty. He explained how things worked at the property – breakfast, honor bar etc. and we arranged to get the scooter from him in the morning.

The cottage was rustic yet very comfortable (with some surprise touches). The porch had an outdoor kitchenette (sink, fridge, hot plate) and a table with two chairs. From the porch we had a very nice view down the property to the ocean. The bed was large with mosquito netting (which is needed as there is no a/c, and you have to open your doors and windows to get a breeze.). The bathroom was large, clean and stocked with big fluffy towels and organic shampoo and body wash (a luxe touch).

Breakfast in the morning is simple, but satisfying: fresh bread for toast, cheese, ham, breakfast cereal and coffee/tea. Scotty made sure everything was laid out nicely and that tables were set for the guests. Throughout our stay, we noticed that Scotty was really focused on making sure that things were clean and in order. Every morning breakfast was neatly put out and cleaned up as soon as the last guest was finished. He cleaned the pool each morning and worked on gardening throughout the day.

We only had two days in Statia, but it is a small island, so we were able to get some good touring in. Day one we took the scooter into town and down along the water to see the harbor. There is a lot of interesting history at the harbor and in town at the small museum. If you plan to hike the Quill, you need to purchase your pass from the nature society office that is located near the harbor (of course, we didn’t see a soul on the trail!). The first day we had lunch at a restaurant that Scotty recommended – Frankys - great local joint with large portions of good food. Since we had the scooter, we didn’t want to stay out after dark, so we just picked up some light snacks for an evening meal on our patio.

The second full day we hiked the Quill and then went over to see the botanical gardens. The Quill is a nice hike and you can make it as long or as short as you wish. The botanical gardens were very nice, with lots of different areas of plantings. It also has a great view of the ocean for whale watching (in season). We went back into town for lunch at the Smoke Alley Grill, as it had the best outdoor deck. It looks like it would be a great place to hang out on a warm evening.

Although it was a short stay, it was very nice. As we toured about we looked at the other lodgings available and it seemed to us that Statia lodge was the nicest in terms of atmosphere, comfort and views. Scotty is very diligent in making sure that everything is correct and clean on the property. We would recommend it for folks who want a very quiet, relaxed stay. It seems like it would be a great -place to stay if you are a diver and want to self-cater (there is a grocery store just down the road.)

We discovered this small gem of an inn by accident. We had been staying in a resort on St. Maarten and could see the distant island of St. Eustatius (Statia) from our hotel. We decided on impulse to check it out. What we found at the end of a 20 minute Winair flight was the Caribbean as it might have been thirty or forty years ago. A beautiful, quiet tropical oasis.
Of the only five possible places to stay, we chose Statia Lodge. There are ten tropical-style cottages, set into a hillside, on beautifully landscaped grounds with a club house and large fresh water swimming pool. It all overlooks the sea, with magnificent views to St. Kitts in the south.
Our cottage was furnished simply but comfortably, and was immaculately clean. A rental car was included in the room rate. This was necessary since Statia Lodge is about five kilometers from town. Other than a continental breakfast, meals were not served, but this was no problem since there is an excellent restaurant on the beach, The Blue Bead, co-owned by Ronnie, who manages Statia Lodge.
Many of the other guests at Statia Lodge were divers. They told us that the dive sites off Statia are spectacular, among the best in the Caribbean. Statia Lodge is connected with the local dive shop, Scubaqua.
For anyone seeking the Caribbean as it once was, we recommend the island of St. Eustatius and Statia Lodge.

An open air cozy cottage with teakwood furniture, tiled floors, a ceiling fan and french doors which open to a patio with an outdoor kitchenette. The private bath was properly equipped with plenty of hot water. The views of the Caribbean and St. Kitts are amazing. The groundskeeper, Scotty is friendly and very helpful. The use of a scooter is included in the rental. You can upgrade to a car for a small additional fee. Depending upon the time of year you visit, I recommend having Scotty install a mosquito net. We really enjoyed our visit.

Room Tip: Wij hadden de middelste lodge in de 2e rij vanaf de ingang/openbare (doodlopende) weg met een mooi vrij uitzicht richting zee, erg rustig!
