My wife and I decided to look for a B&B getaway for our November (2011) wedding anniversary and settled on the Bona Vista B & B and SPA in the Alliston/Cookstown (Barrie) area. In addition to looking on internet we had seen an ad in "Curious, The Tourist Guide" over two years ago. Joanne Sticklee is the hostess and also happens to run the SPA as well, which we thought would make an ideal two night getaway.

Bonavista is a private home pearched on a hill-top on a huge property with a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. After dark, on a clear fall evening, the sky is stunningly lit with stars that a city dweller rarely sees due to the light pollution from city lights. We were greeted by the "welcoming committee" consisting of Joanne's two friendly Golden Retrievers named Bentley and Abby, with tails enthusiastically wagging!

The Master Suite (as is the entire house) was spotlessly clean and well appointed with Bell satellite TV available in the room as well as an internet connection. (This was welcome as I had some things that I could keep track of remotely using my laptop computer). An ensuite bathroom included a shower and a whirlpool tub big enough for two people and two separate his and hers vanities and a surprise gadget... a towel warmer. There is also a large hot tub available to guests but we preferred the privacy of the whirlpool tub. A common sitting room was comfortable, bright and well appointed with plenty of reading material.

Arriving mid-afternoon gave us enough time to unpack and think about where to go for dinner. After doing some Internet searches, we decided to try Mike's Family Restaurant in Alliston (see separate review) which turned out to be a real gem... and Mike was in the kitchen doing the cooking!
( Note to self... we've got to visit Mike's again sometime.)

Arriving back at the house with enough time to relax in the whirlpool tub was a soothing end to the first day of a lovely getaway (well maybe not quite the end, but you can imagine the rest).

The following morning we arrived in the kitchen at the agreed time of 9:00 am and Joanne had a breakfast prepared and laid out for us exactly as we discussed with her the previous evening, including fresh fruit and home-made raisin bran muffins... mmmm!

We had arranged for a half day SPA for each of us, and it included a full body massage and a mini-spa treatment which we both enjoyed, expertly administered by Joanne.

Bonavista is located mid-way between Alliston and Cookstown and an easy drive took us to lunch in Alliston at Rose's Bread Basket at 34 Victoria St. E, a bakery cafe that had deserts, like the rasberry-mango cheesecake that my wife reports was "to die for". The rest of the day was spent partly in Cookstown at Country Consessions, 1 Dufferin St., where my wife looked at and drooled over the 6,000 bolts of fabric and the sewing notions in this very well stocked quilt shop!

Needless to say, we enjoyed our getaway at Bona Vista and we would visit there again.

If you want a great place to stay this is it. The hospitality is fantastic and the host is a wonderful person who can not do enough for you. The rooms are clean and the bed was comfortable. For breakfast I had my choice of fruit and yogurt, all very fresh or bacon and eggs, The coffee and orange juice & muffins were ready for me when I got up in the morning.
All in all the stay was very relaxing, and I recommend this place to stay.

Unfortunately, even though the room and ensuite were beautiful and relaxing, the host's negativity overshadowed our stay. To own such a beautiful home in such a peaceful area and to have nothing to give....if you don't like doing this for living like you said you didn't then retire now.Don't wait for your house to sell. It was obvious from the time you opened the door to the time we left that you get no joy from doing this. Not at any time did we feel welcomed or that our business was important to you. We were simply looking for a little getaway of peace and quiet and someone with a kind open heart. So sad, because otherwise the stay would of been wonderful.

The owner of this property should not be running a bed and breakfast. She ruined our visit by being extremely negative and rude- the house is for sale and no one is looking at it, she doesn't want to be there, there is no money in bed and breakfasts.... on and on. I truely beleive she could care less that she made us very uncomfortable and made a point of dumping her problems on us. In addition, she managed to charge us an additional $25 dollars as we were leaving. We booked a room for $75 dollars - she moved us to another room without asking us and then demanded we pay the extra. At that point we literally just wanted to get out of there.
The room was obviously her bedroom- very large, not in the best condition, but comfortable. There is NO spa on this property... unless you call a bathtub with jets a spa- we were never offered to use the hot tub- and we actually felt very uncomfortable even leaving the room.
She complained about having to get up early to make us breakfast- we needed to get an early start. Very little effort went in to breakfast- cold cereal, fruit, yogurt.... so we should have skipped it and avoided ruining our morning with her awful conversation.

NOT TO BE RECOMMENDED. No hospitality whatsoever. When we got to the Bona Vista, around 9:00pm we were tired and we just wanted to go to sleep; but the t.v. was very loud. By 10:00pm they finally turned it down. Early in the morning around 6:00am we could hear her argue with a man (husband?), which was very loud and then all we heard was her slippers dragging on the floor as she walked in the kitchen, stirring pots and pans around. No respect for her guests. When we came down for breakfast she asked us what we wanted for breakfast. Usually a good B&B, they don't ask that. They usually have a menu planned for there guests. She even made a point that whatever we want is frozen and it would take some time to cook.??? We've had better breakfasts at restaurants. We had to serve ourselves coffee and juice. Jars of jams right on the table, undercooked bacon, brown toast which we didn't have a choice. It's very obvious that this woman is doing this for the money and nothing else. When we came back at night the bed wasn't made. She offered to use the spa so we definetly took her offer but there was so much chlorine in it we had to take a shower after just to take the smell out . So we told her that we would be leaving the next day. The next morning she was never to be seen around. No thank yous or nothing from her as we left, she wasn't around at all. Makes you wonder why throughout the year she only had 11 guests from January - August 2009. She said business was slow this year, but the odd thing is that other B&B's we went to; were booked solid and business was very good. Bad for business isn't it? Lovely house and grounds but that's all.
