My wife and I decided to look for a B&B getaway for our November (2011) wedding anniversary and settled on the Bona Vista B & B and SPA in the Alliston/Cookstown (Barrie) area. In addition to looking on internet we had seen an ad in "Curious, The Tourist Guide" over two years ago. Joanne Sticklee is the hostess and also happens to run the SPA as well, which we thought would make an ideal two night getaway.
Bonavista is a private home pearched on a hill-top on a huge property with a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. After dark, on a clear fall evening, the sky is stunningly lit with stars that a city dweller rarely sees due to the light pollution from city lights. We were greeted by the "welcoming committee" consisting of Joanne's two friendly Golden Retrievers named Bentley and Abby, with tails enthusiastically wagging!
The Master Suite (as is the entire house) was spotlessly clean and well appointed with Bell satellite TV available in the room as well as an internet connection. (This was welcome as I had some things that I could keep track of remotely using my laptop computer). An ensuite bathroom included a shower and a whirlpool tub big enough for two people and two separate his and hers vanities and a surprise gadget... a towel warmer. There is also a large hot tub available to guests but we preferred the privacy of the whirlpool tub. A common sitting room was comfortable, bright and well appointed with plenty of reading material.
Arriving mid-afternoon gave us enough time to unpack and think about where to go for dinner. After doing some Internet searches, we decided to try Mike's Family Restaurant in Alliston (see separate review) which turned out to be a real gem... and Mike was in the kitchen doing the cooking!
( Note to self... we've got to visit Mike's again sometime.)
Arriving back at the house with enough time to relax in the whirlpool tub was a soothing end to the first day of a lovely getaway (well maybe not quite the end, but you can imagine the rest).
The following morning we arrived in the kitchen at the agreed time of 9:00 am and Joanne had a breakfast prepared and laid out for us exactly as we discussed with her the previous evening, including fresh fruit and home-made raisin bran muffins... mmmm!
We had arranged for a half day SPA for each of us, and it included a full body massage and a mini-spa treatment which we both enjoyed, expertly administered by Joanne.
Bonavista is located mid-way between Alliston and Cookstown and an easy drive took us to lunch in Alliston at Rose's Bread Basket at 34 Victoria St. E, a bakery cafe that had deserts, like the rasberry-mango cheesecake that my wife reports was "to die for". The rest of the day was spent partly in Cookstown at Country Consessions, 1 Dufferin St., where my wife looked at and drooled over the 6,000 bolts of fabric and the sewing notions in this very well stocked quilt shop!
Needless to say, we enjoyed our getaway at Bona Vista and we would visit there again.
