Peace Laguna Resort and Spa
Ranked #14 of 110 Hotels in Ao Nang
Reviewed February 24, 2009

We stayed for 10 days in February 2009 at the Peace Laguna Resort in Ao Nang. The staff is extremely hospitably and reads your wishes from your eyes. The (old) resort area is beautiful with a great view to the close by mountain. It takes 5-10 minutes to the beach and the hotel is set back from the crowded main street. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The restaurant is very good as well as the breakfast. A very good place to stay and feel comfortable.
Unfortunately the resort expands to new buildings which are by far not that beautiful. A new street has been build between the resort and the mountain so that it can be presumed that the beautiful view and quietness will soon be gone.
Ao Nang itself is ugly and crowded with tourists and respective shops full of fakes. The beach is narrow and after you have seen the black and stinky sewage running into the sea close to the Centara Grand Hotel, you would not jump into the water voluntarily. But people are warm and friendly and there are lots of long tail boats which can take you to beautiful islands nearby.

Peace Laguna might be suprising on arrival, if you have only seen the pictures of lagoon and private cottages surrounding it - To us the suprice was very positive. We stayed for a week in the recently opened new part of the hotel which is still partly under construction. One might be offended by the constructions but the smiling and ever so slowly moving workmen was fun to watch and did not disturb our peace at all. The rooms (superior) in those new buildings are spacious, modern and of very high standard. If you manage to book a room with the balcony facing the huge limestone walls of Ao Nang - you are set for a nature's own spectacle twice a day. In Thailand you are most likely facing smiley faces and generally good service but the level of skills vary. At Peace Laguna they have managed to combine both. From the arrival to the check out we were faced with always smiling, playfull and wery skillfull personel, willing to entertain and fullfill all our expectations. Small gestures and interest in our wellbeing was on a level that you expect from a five start hotel.

Having been to Thailand 3 times we've become very used to luxurious accomodation, the Peace Laguna is lovely but NOT luxurious.

We stayed in one of the Deluxe Cottages with our own outdoor shower, which looked fab but was always too cold to use! The room itself is huge, very modern & clean. The view from our balcony was a beautiful mountain with lots of lush rainforest. Having read reviews about the lagoon in the hotel being a bit whiffing, we did NOT experience any smell near our room!

The hotel is NOT lit well at night near the rooms, sawn off tree trunks are used as steps to get upto your cottage and they are a little wobbly, with no lights leading upto our cottage, some nights proved a little difficult!

The staff are lovely, the breakfast is average, fruit flies are everywhere, including all over the salad & fruit in the morning! The main pool area isn't great, very basic but there are 2 other pools around the hotel. Cocktails & beer is very expensive in the hotel, there is a shop at the top of the road which sells beer for 15 baht, stock up your own fridge!

The bathroom had a large double jacuzzi bath which had to be used as the shower was outside and very cold to use!

The hotel is situated minutes from the beach and opposite some great little restaurants and market stalls. The beach is lovely at the left top end (looking at the beach from the top of the road from the hotel), go right to the end, there are lots of little bars, massage tents....very cute.

There is major building work going on right outside of the hotel which we were not told about, this will be going on until AT LEAST Oct 2009. Work starts at 6.30am which did cause us to wake up several mornings (plse see pics).

Krabi is amazing and a great island to get to places like Phi Phi Island, Hong Kong Island and Koh Lanta. You can get taxi boat rides from the beach.

We will definately be going to Kabi again, but would choose another hotel. We went to visit the Centara Hotel in Krabi - AMAZING!

We stayed at the Peace Laguna for 3 nights in mid-January 2009. We had 2 adjacent rooms in the “superior” complex which features low rise units with common walls. Note the back section has a lift and is four stories high and the front section (where we stayed on the 2nd floor) had no lift but is only 3 stories high. The superior section is just being finished so there is a bit of work going on and immediately adjacent they are building a restaurant and spa so there is some daytime noise but we didn’t find it a big problem. Other options include the very pretty free standing bungalows with semi-outdoor bathrooms which are clustered around 3 pools and a small lake. There is also an older “standard” room complex similar in style to the new “superior” section and from a distance it looked very pleasant as well.

Rooms in the superior section were very large 50+sqm featuring a king bed (heavenly soft compared to the average Thai bed!!!), and ensuite which was very pleasant (separate shower and bath). However the rooms are poorly finished and still need painting and some outdoor work.

The view to the east is that of the stunning karst-limestone mountain which separates AoNang from Railey. In fact the whole setting was very pretty and made the stay that much more enjoyable (Note the back 4-storey section of the superior room complex does not enjoy these views (except perhaps from the top floor(?). The 3 pools were pleasant and really great for the kids.

Check in was fine and staff were generally friendly although prone to over-confidence (I.e. promising the cost of tours at “X “and then having to apologise when they made the booking and realised it was more expensive! Also we paid upfront on arrival and then were told we had only paid for one room. While this was a legitimate mistake it was still annoying). Check out was a disaster as they tried to charge in our home currency when I specially requested Thai Baht (they do this to make a margin on the currency translation. When I insisted they corrected this they couldn’t and I was forced to pay with another credit card. This was all going on when our transport to take us to the ferry had arrived and we had we boxed into a corner with little sympathy from reception.

Internet connect failed on the last two days we were there with the only help from reception being “try tomorrow…”

The let down of the stay was the breakfast. While there was a reasonable range of options on the Western style buffet menu, all the hot food was not kept in proper warmers so quickly got cold. Coffee was poor. My daughter found ants in her maple syrup and little birds were allowed to fly around the open air breakfast area and peck at the food!

Overall we left with sour taste in our mout which was a shame because it is a beautiful location and could be really good with some attention to customer service.

Walked in here requiring a room for one night as previous hotel too noisy for another night. Asked for cheaper rate but didn’t really get much of a discount from published hotel rates and he threw in a free breakfast – how kind! I’m surprised as the hotel wasn’t full despite being inbetwixt xmas/new year. Great location off the horrendously busy main road, down a lane and incredibly peaceful, yet 2min walk to shops/bars/restaurants and boat dock. There were nice looking cottages set on a lagoon surrounded by lovely gardens. We stayed in brand new, superior room in new block which still smelt of paint! Nice views of gardens and mountains. Room great – big, contemporary, plasma screen, hairdryer etc – all mod cons. Bathroom was big with grey slate everywhere, sunken bath, walk in shower – the business! Yet the funny thing was in here were 2 bottles of complimentary water but a huge sign hung on them saying if you broke the glass bottle you would be charged 60BHT..…. Another niggle was the tea /coffee tray - we were told it would be replenished daily but with only 2 sachets of each…… I was going to ask for x4 tea bags, as I don’t drink coffee just to see what they would say. Don’t you think if I’m paying a £100 for a room, I’m going to be a tad annoyed with such a miser attitude…… ? Buffet breakfast was good and plenty of choice and the usual eggs to order. Never ate in the hotel at night, but the menu was comprehensive and the NY Eve celebration dinner looked promising. Another disappointment – returning to the hotel pool at 4pm, we were informed that there were no towels left…… well, find some, are you 4 star or 1 star? Clients were middle aged couples or families of Scandinavian/german origin. Despite above, would probably stay here again for a few days. Choose your hotel and location with care in AoNang – it’s incredibly difficult to get away from the noise.

We had the pleasure of staying in one of the private cottages at the Peace Laguna Resort. The cottages were enourmous with beautiful timber floors and peaked timber roof. The bathroom had a spa with a hand held shower for the times you wished not to use the very private and unique outdoor shower( which only has cold water but for the majority of the time was not a problem thanks to the humid Thai climate).

The room had a balcony over the lagoon looking out to the huge limestone cliff which provided a stunning backdrop. We loved the relaxing feel of the very spacious resort.

The resort has three swimmining pools located through out the grounds with plenty of deckchairs (If the resort was to introduce a policy of use the deck chair or lose it would be to it's advantage, although on the few occassions we used the pool had no problem with chair availability)

Breakfast had plenty of choice with some small variations to the cooked breakfast on offer. The usual bacon, eggs and omelettes cooked to your liking, cereal, yoghurt, bread, cold cuts, fruit and thai food..

Staff were lovely, and very happy to give us a few simple Thai lessons which was great.

All in all we loved our stay here - right in the middle of Ao Nang, yet blissfully quiet. Balcony overlooking the lagoon was a particularly beautiful touch. If I had to say one thing that I'd change, it would be that they need to update their towels, as they're a bit discoloured and worn. But seriously, this is splitting hairs, all linen was clean which is the main thing!

Would definately stay here again...

This is a resort that was recommended to us by our colleague. We were there first time back in 2006 and every time we go back to Krabi, specifically Ao Nang, we will always stay there.

Why we chose this place since its not even on the beach. First of all, Ao Nang beach is nothing to fancy for. We go there to get easy access to the islands. There are like 'taxi' boat that goes from the beach to the islands all day long till sunset. So there are no need to pay much more for seaside rooms. The beach is about 5 mins walk from the entrance of the hotel, although the beach is not far from the property it self. Secondly, the price is just right for the service, quality of rooms and facilities.

The room are nice, clean and service is friendly. Certainly not the five-star luxury resorts you would expect, but simply good enough for what you pay. Services are friendly and always helpful. Everything we asked for was carried out with a smile and politeness.

The lagoon is very nice environment to be in and there are 3 swimming pool! I must say, of all the time we went there, we only eat in the hotel once and can't really comment on the quality. But the breakfast is better than some five-stars resorts we been to.

The down side, is the cleaning lady is not always very efficient. Some time trash are not collected. Other than this, we can't complain much about any thing else here.

If you're a mid-budget traveler, this is a place to stay in Ao Nang, Krabi.
