pros:
+ the beach is wonderful, quiet, relaxing - quite possible the best beach I've been to.
+There are enough sunbeds and you will find plenty of those in the shade.
+ room are big
+beds are comfortable
+bathroom is huge
+ breakfast is wonderfull, huge selection

pro for me, possibly not for others:
+monkeytrail (it is very steep and yes you will arrive on the other side completely wet - but this is also the reason why the beach is quiet and there are almost only hotel guests
also the best restaurant is the very first one after the monkeytrail something with fishermen)
+the monkeys - provided a lot of entertainment, but they really do steal everything that you leave outside and during breakfast you have to watch your food if you sit outside

cons:
-service at the beach bar was possible the worst I've ever encountered while in Thailand
-food is (in all restaurants) quite expensive
-room cleanliness is not very good
-tv is from the stone age
-check in was very long (as we got a room with a double bed first, when I specifically wished for one with two beds)
- no refreshments upon check in
- check in staff was not very friendly nor did they appear very competent
-the overall state of the hotel and its facilities needs updating
-we got a very good price (also we came during low season) but the prices they charge during high season are way to high for what you get
-the spa is nice but oberpriced

tips:
bring a good torch
don't come with small children (they will not be able to make the monkey trail, and taking the boat shuttle is a hassle)

all in all I really enjoyed my stay, but I did not come for the hotel or its facilities I came for the beach. So if you are looking for a luxury hotel you should look elsewhere.

Dear AVKG

Thank you for sharing your comments following your recent stay at our resort.

I was pleased to read you enjoyed many aspects of the resorts service and facilities as well as the beach. In contrast I appreciate the specific feedback on the areas we still need to improve.

We acknowledge that the resort is in need of updating which is why we have commenced with half the rooms being upgraded now and the remainder to be finished by October of this year.

Once again thank your for your support and recognition.

Kind regards, David Martens

We have just returned from a 12 night stay here in celebration of our 25th wedding anniversary and had the most amazing relaxing time. Everything about this place was absolutely wonderful and we would strongly recommend anyone to go there. It is officially a 4 star hotel and we feel it is one of the best. The standard in all areas was very high and all the staff were such warm friendly people. The positives of this place are too numerous to mention. If you want a complete get away from the rat race then this is the place to go. Having said that, Ao nang is very easy to get to for lively entertainment which we did take advantage of for a couple of evenings. We will just say that we were there out of season so we can only assume that it gets much busier in high season but we firmly believe it will still be a wonderful place to go to.

Our great holiday experience

~ Transfer from airport to hotel
Easy and convenient. We got in at 745am, the hotel arranged the pick up (price is comparable with other transportation) and brought us to the beach transfer at Nopparatthara. Then the shuttle speed boat took us to the hotel. Total time = 90mins. Do make sure you book your transport before coming.

~ Check in
Smooth. We arrived on the floating jetty, easy check in. The tide was ok but we still had a choppy walk coming in. We are told that a permanent jetty is not built to preserve the area. As we were early at 930 and the room was not available yet, we spent our time at the pool. We actually lost track to time but our room was already ready at 1230. We enjoyed the swimming and the surroundings

~ Room with the jacuzzi
Our room was at the mid point. Not too high (then the walk from the pool will be a good 10 minutes). Not too near the pool (then it will be too close to morning & night walking guest traffic and not private enough). The room jacuzzi is not fantastic but a requirement if you want a nice view and to enjoy the night view. Although our room view had some buildings blocking the beach view, we still enjoyed the sunset. Our room had a great room space, comfy bed, great tub, nice shower area and off course the balcony with jacuzzi. Nice.

~ Restaurants
The lotus restaurant for breakfast was nice. We had company with naughty monkeys, fish at adjoining pond with huge catfishes included, a nice pianist giving pleasant tunes and extra smiley staff making your breakfast as comfortable as ever.
Dinner - If you are here on Friday , the RiimSaai Thai restaurant host a Friday night buffet and dinner show. Entertaining, lots of food and we think the price was just right.
On one of the nights we had fresh made ice cream using chilled liquid nitrogen. It was an experience

~ Trail to Ao Nang
We did this steep climb. It's tiring, fun but the short nature experience is interesting. Not for the older folks nor those who are scared of heights. However it's the only route to Ao Nang (save for the trip through the beach when low tide). Not recommended for night walks as the trail is kept in minimum state to preserve the natural surroundings
Ao Nang is like all the other towns. Cheap stuff and you need to bargain - start at 50% from what the vendor quotes you. Chances are the mid point is 65% of the starting price. Ao Nang beach also have monkeys but we didn't get close to the monkeys like some tourist as the monkeys are really dirty. I have photos of them playing in the drain waters and may be diseased.

~ the Beach (the high point )
The beach area is a natural cove on its own. The hotel also provides canoeing, free 1 hour kayak, and sailing too. Fantastic sunset views and for the romantics

~ Other happy points to our holiday
We were happy as Centara Grand is not at the centre of town with crowds , no night life with loud music, no funny people wandering round the pool and hotel. As the hotel is nestled in a cove, it's quite private and away from the main Ao Nang crowd.
Monkeys are everywhere and we always made sure the rooms are locked securely as they have been stories of the monkeys being a nuisance but this is expected, given their nature. We never had been this close to monkeys .
The staff were also extremely helpful at most times

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and we will return to Centara Grand again

Room Tip: Get the jacuzzi room as the view from the balcony will be better (although our room view was partial...

My partner and I have just returned from a wonderful holiday in this lovely hotel. The hotel is set in the most amazing landscape and the wildlife adds to the feeling of being in a nature reserve.

We were there for 2 weeks and so on the first day we opted for the baht bonanza. We gave the hotel a sum of money and they added 50% to it and we could spend it in the hotel on food and the Spa. This was good value and very useful and we found that by paying up front we did not have to think about money throughout the holiday. We ate in all the restaurants and found bot the service and food excellent. The Japanese restaurant was particularly wonderful, with fresh food (particularly fish) prepared to perfection.
We walked over the monkey trail into Ao Nang a few times and I found the steps a bit steep but I took it slowly and managed the trail in around 20 minutes. (I am in my 50's and asthmatic). The boat and the floating jetty were ok but we preferred the nature on the monkey trail. We saw the monkeys at one end of the beach just having some "family" time and this was delightful. A few times they came down to the breakfast area and stole some food and the staff chased them away. As this was expected (from reading other review) we were not surprised and enjoyed the experience. But some hotel guests were not expecting it and were not impressed and chose to eat inside the restaurant.
The breakfasts in the Lotus restaurant were wonderful and there was enough choice for everyone. We ate on the decking of the Lotus restaurant next to a really large pond which had a few hundred fish. Every day we fed the fish and watched the large Monitor lizard slide into the pond and cruise around until it snapped up a fish. The view from there was of the amazing cliffs so breakfast was a favourite time for us. We took our time and the staff never rushed us.
Because of the baht bonanza I felt I could afford a spa treatment and as the spa experience was exceptional I tried quite a few more. I particularly enjoyed the hot stone massage. The staff in the spa were all very attentive and professional and I always felt thoroughly spoilt and relaxed.
The weather was mixed with a few days of sunshine, a few mornings or afternoons of rain but mostly the days were sun and cloud. It was always hot and humid so the air-conditioning in the rooms was essential for a good night’s sleep.
We had a spa luxury ocean view room. The room was large but because of the trees it did not have a view of the ocean. On the other hand the trees provided a bit of privacy on the balcony where the spa was. The room was "tired" but the hotel is in the middle of a refurbishing program so by next summer this won't be a problem. The wet room with the bath and rainfall shower was wonderful.
The best part of the hotel by far was the staff. Always helpful and polite and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. My partner organised a surprise birthday cake for me on my birthday in the Japanese restaurant and the 2 singers sang a special song for me. It was a very special evening. My thanks to the staff for making the holiday so special. We will definitely be visiting this hotel again.

Room Tip: Top floors have better views but there are more stairs to climb.

The many positives:

It is secluded, no riff-raff unless they visit after walking the 'monkey trail'!

The rooms are big, we had a jacuzzi spa on our balcony which was fantastic and all the amenities you could have asked for, they are cleaned every day and even have the bed sheets turned down every evening.

The staff are good value. Friendly, polite and you can laugh with them too, which us Brits love! Mainly Thai but the management team included an American and an Indian who were very nice.

The shuttle boat, jetty and monkey trail to get the hotel may seem daunting but can be quite enjoyable!

The pools are lovely particularly the 'relaxation pool'.

The view is out of this world and you can Kayak free for an hour too. The sea is warm and there are many beds around the pool and along the beach.

The food is good, massive selection for breakfast and the in-room dining was good too. If you want lunch or evening meal in hotel there are 5 restaurants to choose from.

The monkeys - Wow, you have a story there already! There are not going to attack you or anything like that, just make sure your balcony door is locked when you go to bed (which most people would do anyway!!)

Three happy hours at the bars throughout the day which are great value.

Everything in Ao Nang is dirt cheap, start your haggling at 50% of what they say for trips, you will get near it, particluarly if there is more than 2 of you. Alcohol and Food is on offer everywhere and we never had a bad meal.

Some negatives though:

A bit of TLC may be required (evidence of that being actioned when we were there though).

Rooms could be a bit cleaner, but please remember your surroundings and how much dirt you bring to the room... You are in a National Forest!!

In Low Tide times (try to check before you stay) boats can be cancelled meaning you cannot get out until late for evening meals sometimes.

Food and Drink is expensive, but with it being dirt cheap in Ao Nang you can afford the occasional nice meal in the hotel!

Room Tip: There is a metal grate on one of the roofs that engineers use, try to be away from this as the monke...
