This resort was better then we had expected. We had not been to Krabi since having children, so was a little concerned about how the kids would like it.. If they would be entertained enough etc..

I am so glad we chose that resort for a couple of reasons. One being that it was as hectic as other areas and so was much more picturesque. The other being that there was loads to do with the kids and the kids LOVED having monkeys visit our balcony every morning.

Although you are a little isolated, this is what makes it so nice!!!

We recently returned from a magical 7 nights staying at this stunning resort. The Centara Grand Resort located directly on the beach at the beautiful and secluded Pai Plong Bay, nestled amongst the stunning jungle and limestone cliffs, one bay away from the main resort area of Ao Nang.
We booked an ocean front superior deluxe room and the room was spacious with a stunning bathroom featuring extremely comfortable bedding. The rooms are serviced daily. The views from our room were magnificent looking out onto the majestical 'Limestone formations, I must admit to spending quite a lot of time during the evening just relaxing on the the day bed inhaling the smells and postcard picture scenery........incredible.

Breakfast at this resort was nothing short of 5 star and we alternated eating in the stunning restaurant or by the pond with the massive monitor lizard which my children delighted in. The resort have free daily activities including yoga, pilates, beach volleyball, watersports, sailing, football, cooking classes and Muay Thai kick boxing which my husband partook in.

The children spent hours swimming in the beautiful pool with a cave, which was definitely a feature of the swimming pool and enjoying the pool side service of Banana Lassi's and fabulous Thai stir fry's. We hired the resorts sea kayaks, which are free of charge for the first hour and spent 50 minutes with the children kayaking around the big limestone formation known by the locals as 'Railay Bay Tall Tower', and had so much fun exploring the mangroves.

The only access to the resort is via the resorts shuttle speedboat service, private long tail boat or if you are up for a bit of action, as our family are....the monkey trail. The monkey trail is this quaint rickety old wooden track will take you from The Centara Grand Resort, in Railay Bay , Krabi to Ao Nang Beach in 5 -15 minutes, depending on your level of fitness and it is definitely a unique feature of the resort.

The Monkey trail is located in the national park and is full of vicious monkey's, pythons and snakes, but if you steer clear of the monkey's and don't carry any bags containing food, they will leave you alone.

I had researched the monkey trail via Tripadvisor and received some very informative information from a lovely English couple who had recently stayed at the resort, so I had no hesitation in using it, and what great fun and an excellent work out it was...after consuming so much amazing food at the resort.

On arrival to the resort, you will be greeted by the warm, friendly staff and an amazing floating jetty, which the children loved, as if the water was rough you would get a wave effect!! So much Fun.

The Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi has a 500-metre beach frontage with superb views of the verdant limestone formations that characterize this beautiful part of Southern Thailand and we would come back to this resort in a heart beat...perfect for family's with children, honeymooners or retirees....

Room Tip: Opt for an Ocean facing room as the view is worth the extra cost....

We have stayed 2 weeks in January 2013 in this Hotel. We had chosen it for its location which includes a more or less private beach (the beach is only accessible via a walking path, the so-called "Monkey Trail", from Ao Nang or by boat). Therefore we were hoping for a quiet place.
Unfortunately it is not as quiet as we thought due to the heavy traffic with long tail boats and speed boats. Of course this is not the fault of the hotel but you should consider this when you want to go there. The first week I thought we are staying close to an airport full of Cessnas and Pipers.
When we arrived we had some problems with the water which was resolved after one day and after intervention of a representative of our tour operator. In the meantime we had to go to the fitness center to use the toilets and showers over there.
Our room was an ocean view appartment of a very convenient size but already showing lots of signs of ageing (cupboards not closing properly, broken tiles etc.). Every room has a mini bar but as the prices of the drinks were even higher than in the hotel restaurants we have not taken anything from it. The housekeeping although very friendly is not very efficient. As mentioned by other travellers before there are lots of monkeys aound the hotel. These monkeys are leaving quite some dirt sometimes and I think it is not normal that you as a guest have to have to find your way around the monkey excrements on the stairs to your room. Within the two weeks we were there the stairs haven't be cleaned a single time.
The four restaurants of the hotel offer excellent food at very high prices and for Thai standard exorbitant prices. The Japonese Restaurant "Hagi" I would personally consider the best but the other three are not far from being as good. It is very easy to find a place in the restaurants as they are relatively empty. The service was excellent with only very few communication problems. The breakfast buffet is offering a great variety of food and the quality was very good during our stay.
The hotel staff is very friendly but the communication is not always very easy. However, some staff members are speaking excellent English but they are not always available when you need them.
The hotel has a free scheduled boat service to Nopparat Thara Beach. If you miss the boat you will have to wait for one hour to get the next. Another possibility is to take a long tail boat to Ao Nang which costs 150 BAHT per person one way which is quite some money for Thai standards. The monkey trail is fun but you need to be carefull. I would not recommend the use of it when it is dark. As we were warned of the monkeys we have put all our belongings into a backpack and therefore did not have any problems wtih the little thieves.
The beach facilities are ok. The pool was cleaned every day and the beach was quite clean during our stay as well. The mattresses on the beach chairs are comfortable but are looking so shabby and dirty that it took us some time to get used to that. I do not understand why they do not remove the mattresses from the chairs in the evening like I have seen in other resorts in Asia and also in the Caribbean but leave them there 24h no matter if it is dry or if it is raining.

All in all we have enjoyed our stay and we were happy to escape the cold weather in Europe but we have already been to better places for less money.

We stayed at the Centara in Krabi in November 2012 as part of a family group, spending a night in a premium deluxe room (with a great view) and then sharing a two bedroom beachside villa (with loads of space).
We were hoping for a great place to stay at the beach with our four year old - and some things about the Centara were great and some less so. Our rooms were lovely (although others in a group had maintenance problems throughout our stay) and we had loads of room. The beach was really nice and great for young kids, as were the pools. Sitting next to the fish in the ponds at breakfast was also great - meant our son was entertained for ages feeding the fish with the bread provided while we had a relatively leisurely breakfast.
The restaurants all had the same kids menu, which was fine, but most of the restaurants only open at 6.30 and service was generally fairly relaxed. It meant we were often not eating until 7.30, by which time our son was getting pretty hungry and grumpy. Access was also a bit of an issue - we didn't have any problems with the floating jetty but the boat times are not great, particularly if you want to have dinner in Ao Nang. You either had to be finished dinner and back at the pier by 6.15 or you only got back to the hotel after 8. Our son did manage to walk the monkey trail without problems but it rained most days we were there and we didn't want to attempt it in the rain. Between the restaurant and boat times, it didn't really feel like Centara was interested in catering to families.
We did have a lovely time - but next time would probably stay somewhere that was easier to get to and from, especially around four-year-old dinner time.

Dear Purle3121

Thank you for sharing your comments following your family holiday in November.

I was surprised to read your comments about catering to families as we cater to many families throughout the year and I am surprised you could not eat until 6.30pm. I will follow this up further with our restaurant managers, as we have a specific children’s menu so children can dine anytime of the day.

I appreciate your comments about the complimentary boat schedule, however for the benefit of the other readers on this forum, the boat schedule is designed to meet arriving and departing flights into Krabi airport. Outside of these times we literally operate the boats almost each hour to and from the pier.

Once again thank your for your feedback and trust we may get an opportunity to welcome you back when your son is a little older.

As others here have mentioned, the hotel is in a superb location with the best scenery for a hotel I have ever seen.
We stayed in a spa ocean facing room which was definitely worth the extra and the rooms are superb (great size and facilities). We were particularly impressed with the bathroom/wet room. We found that the monkeys were only an issue if any food was left on the balconies as we did not see them at any other time.
The main problem with this resort is the price of food which by Thai standards is frankly outrageous. The restaurants were 20% full at the most during our visit which was a shame as the food is of a high standard but there was no atmosphere. The only popular restaurant was the beach bar which again was heavily over priced. They also add VAT to the menu price, then a service charge of 10% and even have the audacity to leave a section for tips despite the fact that you have effectively left one! If they simply lowered the prices the place would be packed every night, the bars full and there would be a great atmosphere but currently it is more like a ghost town in the evenings.
I would recommend going into Ao Nang to buy water from one of the 7/11 stores as the prices in the hotel are again ridiculous. Given the heat and the location of the hotel I would have expected them to make some provisions for this. The clearly take advantage of what is effectively a captive audience.
The beach is great but AO Nang itself has been so commercialised that is like a typical tacky Spanish resort but with people constantly following and hassling you. Please also do some research on the local area as there have been a number of attacks on westerners over the last few years in the immediate vicinity.
As mentioned by others, the monkey trail is not suitable for the elderly/those of a low fitness level. I was fine and found it quite fun but others were visibly struggling.
The other major issue here is the communication skills of the employees. Their English was terrible and they could not even understand basic requests. Luckily, the management were available during our stay and they spoke great English and were the only thing making the service acceptable. Both Laura and Jan were great but they clearly had to deal with too much as they were the only poeple many guests could communicate with (many people we met had similar experiences).

The breakfast is of a high standard and the grounds are well maintained.

Overall this was an idyllic setting for a hotel of a high standard of rooms but for the reasons mentioned above it falls short and if I simply wanted a luxury beach holiday I would go somewhere in the carribean where they know exactly how to run a great beachfront hotel.

Thank you for sharing your comments following your recent stay at our resort.

It is always a pleasure to receive compliments on our staff and thank you for specifically mentioning Jan our Food and Beverage Director and Laura our Assistant Guest Services Manager, these comments are greatly appreciated by them. The chef was also pleased to read you enjoyed his breakfast buffet and you found the room very comfortable.

As mentioned many time our location is very special, but with our location come additional challenges as everything is delivered and sent by boat, including food, laundry, garbage, water and even gas. We do not pass these additional costs to our services and we do conduct regular reviews of our menu prices to ensure we are in line with our competitor hotels that offer similar services.

I am sorry that you found it difficult to communicate with some of our staff, unfortunately for the Thai staff in this region, English is not their first language and in many cases can be their third language.

Once again many thanks for your feedback and for sharing your experiences.

Reviewed January 27, 2013

My partner and I visited the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas for 5 nights in the middle of January 2013. Let me start by saying that we really really really wanted to love this hotel. Fate, however, had different plans.

We drove over to Ao Nang from the Phuket area, and the first thing that we noticed (which I wasn't expecting) is that there is no direct vehicle access to the resort. The navigation system took us to a hotel-branded office & parking lot, where one can park their car and then take a shuttle down to Nopparat Thara Beach to then take a boat over to the resort. The transfers are included, but keep in mind that the boat is on a schedule, so like us, you might have to hang out in Ao Nang for an hour or so until the boat is coming back. Just keep this in mind and it might be a good idea to contact the hotel to coordinate your arrival with the boat schedule.
[The boat transfer between Nopparat Thara Beach and the resort is free of charge, however, the long-tail boat transfer from resort to Ao Nang Beach does have a minimal fee. All trips will need to be coordinated through the resort, so you'll need to plan your travel ahead of time.]

The property itself is in a stunning location. The resort is built in a jungle-like section of land surrounded on three sides by limestone cliffs, and the other side by the ocean. There is a walking access to Ao Nang Beach via the "Ao Nang Monkey Trail" (see section below for more info), but this really isn't an effective means of travel. There are several restaurants on site, which are really quite good. The food was a positive, as they have a good variety of dining options available, and are open quite late. Two highlights were Hagi (Japanese restaurant with very good sushi choices), and Rim Saal, where I had one of the best red curries that I've ever had before. Service at both locations was very good. In addition, On the Rocks provides a nice international fare of options by the ocean/pool. We appreciated the ability to enjoy dishes like pizza and wraps as an alternative to seafood for a couple of meals. The breakfast buffet is served at Lotus Court, and it was average for what I would expect from a resort breakfast.

The resort spa was also very well run and we enjoyed the massages that we received at the spa. The facility was nice and the service was good.

The Ao Nang Monkey Trail was a sight to behold. Consisting of an 85-degree ascent of rickety planks and missing handrails, this is the only land access to Ao Nang during high tide. To be fair, this trail isn't the construction of the resort, and isn't their liability. There's about a 50% chance of twisting an ankle, breaking a bone, or having all of one's possession's stolen by the marauding macaques (monkeys) that inhabit the jungle through which this trail passes. One should never attempt to cross this path with small children, after dark, or if one isn't in good physical shape. However, if you make it past all of these caveats, it's a lot of fun. The monkeys are ADORABLE (albeit little thieves) and they are EVERYWHERE. Go in the morning over to Ao Nang Beach (the other side of the trail) and there are about 200 monkeys pandering the tourists for attention and food. One of the most unique experiences you'll have on your trip; this part is not to be missed and it was one of our favorites.

The resort was constructed in 2006, and all of the rooms are built in an Asian-style manner, meaning that the rooms open up to a surrounding veranda from two sides, and yet are able to be completely closed up with floor-to-ceiling wood blinds. The design was very nicely done, and I really enjoyed the ability to relax on the veranda during the day. On the down side, the rooms are starting to show their age. Many of the case goods didn't operate flawlessly (the storage cabinet with the menu bar had broken doors, and thus wouldn't close and the light stayed on all the time). In addition, the dark woods are showing a lot of scratches and wear, so at some point a remodel will be necessary. However, these are minor issues, and we did enjoy the room layout.

Unfortunately, the problems started on the 2nd day when we noticed that there was an apparent intermittent lack of running water in the room. At first, we would be without water for an hour here or there (which is a bit frustrating if one needs to use the toilet), but we would try to reschedule our activities around when water would be on. We reported the problem to the front desk, and they said that there was a water main break on the property and that they were working to repair the problem. No worries, we thought, it will be corrected tomorrow. The next two days, however, proved to have the same problems. We reported the issue on both days, and finally on the 4th day, we spoke with the assistant manager who assured us that the problem had been fixed, and offered us dinner vouchers for our troubles. (It did seem a little concerning that they said the problem had been fixed at 6pm and yet we were still without water at 8pm). Again, we were patient and were assured that the problem would be resolved. The next day (Day 5), we awoke to having water, but absolutely no warm/hot water. Unfortunately, this was not intermittent, and in fact, the problem was never resolved that day. Most frustrating, however, is that we called several times to speak with management on that day, and they would never return our calls. In fact, once, the call center representative just hung up on us. We were told that Engineering was working on the problem, but no one ever showed up or called back with any updates. Finally, the Customer Service Manager offered us a 10,000 THB discount on the incidentals for our troubles, which we accepted with the assurances that the problem would be solved so that we could at least take a shower before checking out. The water was finally warm about 2 hours before checking out on the 6th day, but we had never received any communication saying the problem was resolved, so most of our stay at the resort was spent checking the tap to see if there 1) was flowing water, or 2) if it was warm. Very frustrating for a resort as expensive as this when one's goal is to relax.

To sum it up, we realized that there was a water main break and this can cause havoc at the resort. Our main complaint is that this resort doesn't seem to have a good handle on communication of issues or resolution status. After about 30 calls, we were finally able to speak to someone who could reasonably understand the problem and actually do something about it, but after that conversation ended, one is back to having to make 30 calls again to reach the same person. Towards the end, it was a comedy of errors. As we were leaving the resort, they had to scramble (for some reason) to find our bags and bring them to the boat. Finally, after 20 minutes of waiting, they brought my partner's bag and some other customer's (it wasn't mine). Even the manager was shaking his head wondering what else could go wrong. I was just laughing inside, but I felt sorry for the folks that were having to run around wondering what was going on. I'm not sure if this is indicative of Centara's management, or if this is just a resort-specific case, however, there is definitely a lack of coordination/communication at this resort. We did very much appreciate the incidental discount of $10,000 THB (which is a drop in the bucket to the total costs), but I wouldn't have booked this resort if I knew it was going to be so frustrating.

PROS: The resort is built in a jungle-like setting, so you'll see plenty of wildlife...we saw geckos, birds, gibbons, and tons of crab-eating macaques (these guys are everywhere). The resort restaurants are good, and the prices are not completely absurd. The spa is a nice facility and they have a good selection of offerings.

CONS: The resort is just not managed as well as it should be if they really want to be a 4- or 5-star property. There's really no central communication between staff, and although there are definitely individuals that were exceptionally friendly, as a whole these people are overshadowed by a lack of coordination. If there's a problem, it is unlikely that it will be resolved quickly.

OVERALL: The property is beautiful and if it were managed more effectively, it could be a real gem. I think that if you're more of the type that is wanting to be spending time out of the resort, this might be a good location to base in Krabi. However, if you're looking for total relaxation without worry, this is just not your best bet.

Room Tip: Higher floors are best for the views, but the top floor verandas don't have a lot of shade. 3rd...

Dear shoptb1

Thank you for sharing your detailed comments following your recent stay at our resort.

I was surprised to read you were not aware that access to the resort is only by boat, this is clearly mentioned on our website as well as on the website you booked through.

Unfortunately as you have mentioned there was a main water pipe that was broken in the resort during part of your stay which did affect the water supply to a group of rooms over two days. However from further investigation it was later discovered that the issue with water to your building (containing 6 rooms) was the hot water heater had broken at the same time. Therefore I can understand why the staff was confused between communications of no water where as the issue was there was no "hot" water.

I am truly sorry you found it difficult to communicate with the staff but we do have a system in place where any issue raised either at the front desk or the guest service department is followed up with the Guest Service department until the issue is resolved, as you did with our guest services manager. We also have eight expatriate staff working in the operation on a daily basis that would have been more than willing to assist you.

Once again thank you for your feedback and please be assured that we are all committed and are working hard to continuously improve the quality of our product and service to meet all our guest’s expectations.

yours sincerely, David Martens

A very well run operation set in a scenic location in Ao Nang, Krabi. Slightly away from the main town, but relatively easy to reach via boat or via the walking path through the national park.

We had planned to celebrate my partners birthday there after doing the Elephant Hills trek. The staff were very responsive in the weeks prior to us arriving, and went out of their way in helping me organise a special private dinner on the beach for her birthday including a surprise marriage proposal, in which the staff were very good at keeping the secret!

The dinner was above my expectations and the service and attention throughout the stay was fantastic.

We stayed for just over a week and did a few of the local tours, spent one or two sessions at the spa or doing the resorts activities, and just chilled out at the resort on other days. I think if we had stayed any longer, we would of started to get bored, however, i think anyone thinking of staying for a week or so, this is a perfect location where you are close enough to the local town when you want to sample the local nightlife, and secluded enough when you want to chill out with a bit of luxury away from the hustle and bustle.

It was a great stay, with great memories, and we would definitely go back for a chilled out break.
