“Clean and tidy hotel, friendly staff”
Reviewed November 29, 2007

We have just returned from our holidays in the Best Western Ao Nang Bay Resort and we were fully satisfied. Perhaps the negative comments on this hotel date from the time before it belonged to the Best Western Group? In our opinion there is no reason to complain about it. The pictures and discriptions in the internet are absolutely correct. The hotel is clean and tidy, breakfast is substantial and the staff, which all speak English more or less, is very friendly. If you are planning to stay in this hotel we would recommend to ask for a room which is not to the street side. Noise from the street and nearby building sites can be very disturbing at night. Apart from the fact that Ao Nang is unfortunately not a very quiet location and it is full of tourists, the hotel is a very nice relaxing place.

Stayed at the hotel from 8-18 August 2007. Summary: if you want a clean, cheap room to sleep in while you spend your days out running around, this place is a good deal. If you're looking for an all-inclusive resort that you don't have to leave to enjoy your vacation, keep looking.

Details: Made the booking through the company travel agent, and had no problems at check in. The desk staff all spoke English, and had no trouble locating the reservation and getting us checked in. One nice feature here compared to other Thai hotels I've used was that no coupons are required for breakfast. Breakfast was adequate, but I never saw a single patron in the hotel restaurant for any of the other meals. All of the staff I encountered spoke enough English to handle my requests with no problems, but I never noticed any of the famous Thai hospitality I have experienced in Phuket, Chiang Mai, or Samui; I always felt like I was a bother or an interruption when I needed to talk to the staff.

Our room was clean and in good condition, so I have no particular complaints there. If you want peace and quiet, ask for a room that faces out; I stayed in 314, and I had a nice view of a solid wall of trees 3 feet outside the balcony. If you'd like to have something to watch outside your room, ask for a pool view. (I notice complaints about cleanliness and room condition in other reviews. Much of the hotel exterior smelled of fresh paint, and several of the rooms were undergoing renovation while I was there, so there is some upkeep going on.)

The location was ideal for me; just a few yards off the beach road, so less traffic and noise, but close enough to walk everywhere. (By the way, my 1st choice was Ali's Hotel & Spa, but the girlfriend chose Ao Nang Bay Resort & Spa. On arrival, I was surprised to find them right across the street from each other. If I return to Krabi, I'll be trying Ali's.) Overall, I would say that if you want a clean, cheap room to sleep in while you spend your days out running around, this place is a good deal. If you're looking for an all-inclusive resort that you don't have to leave to enjoy your vacation, keep looking.

Agree with the previous review. Like to add the following:
18-20 Sun chairs for the entire hotel. People went to the poolside to reserve their sun chairs at 7 am. Only the manager spoke english. Front desk staff didn't speak a word of english.
They put old choclate bars in our room and tried to charge us for them. Breakfast was leftovers from last nights dinner.
Tried to overcharge us when checking out.
Would never stay here again.

Booked this hotel last minute with a local agent after arriving back on the mainland with nowhere to stay. There were plenty of options but I had aleady researched hotels in Ao Nang so had a pretty good idea what to expect. Best Western Ao Nang Bay (be warned there are two Best Westerns here leading to much confusion) advertises all sorts of luxuries on its website, however, don't be fooled as we were. The property is in a good location opposite the beautiful, full of nature Pakasi and the pretty nice Alis hotels (looked round both) a short walk from everything, but this is really its only saving grace as you certainly won't want to linger in this hotel. Here's a lis of problems conerning what the website shows and the reality of the place: the site shows a lovely pool with waterfull, jacuzzi and bar, the waterfall and jacuzzi never worked all three days we were there despite the hotel being full and it being high season, the bar opened when it felt like it (this annoyed me so much I went over to the other hotels to look about and found there pool bars open already) and the pool reaked of chlorine. The site mentions a well equipped gym, the reality is a run down room that is grossly dirty with bits of broken equipment laying around, totally unusable even for those with the least requirements of a gym, you are really better off doing pressups in your room, also the "gym" was full of mosies and after being a week in the krabi area I was bit here for the first time not once but three times despite spending just ten minutes in the room trying to work out. The location and views: the beach which is probably 200 m away as the website says is not where you will want to spend any time at all the only real beach in Ao Nang is the other end of the resort near the Golden Beach resort so even if I had choose this hotel as a place to sleep after long days on the beach I would have been seriously let down. The views are alright from a deluxe room but theres loads of grotty buildings all around, all very apparent from the common areas and balconies of the hotel. Then there was the steam and sauna rooms which were never switched on or used and the spa which was as expensive as the beautiful one at the Nakamanda where I also stayed but looked like any local massage shop. The hotel claims to be a resort but the first night there was no hotel info in the room not even instructions re the safe so any visitor would have to find out what was available themselves. When I asked at reception about a hotel info pack they just laughed, I mentioned there was supposed to be a gym somewhere they laughed again, I know why now! By the end of the stay I took to calling the room the mosquito den as somehow (perhaps through the bathroom extractor fan) mosies would always get into the room. I stayed in cheap bungalows on ko phi phi during this trip but never once got bitten til my stay here at the Best Western 7 days into my trip. Right, now to be fair, the good points: I was here three nights one in a standard room and two in a deluxe, the deluxe was nicer with a large terrace and partial sea view, in both rooms the beds were large and comfortable and the linen was nice smelling and clean. The aircon was modern and quiet. In the second room the deluxe one there was an info pack and room service menu and I did eat from this which was served propmtly and was fine. Be under no false illusions though this is a tour operators hotel mostly for companies from scandanavia, it had the distinct feel of a nasty thomsons hotel the ones they put you in if you go on a last minute 'allocated on arrival' deal. A truly awful place I wish I had listened to the reviews on this hotel and ignored the ones on the Pakasi or Golden Beach!

This must be one of the dirtiest and most neglected hotels I have stayed at. Don't believe the website!!!! The manager was very helpful and tried to rectify problems but many of the problems were beyond her control. Including stained sheets, frayed and holey bathmats, broken furniture, stained curtains, mould in rooms, dog poop, dirty bedroom walls, smelly towels, scum around pool bar (which was always closed) dirty ashtrays and beer bottles left for days by the pool. We could have paid the same amount for a superior hotel across the street.

  • Liked — The manager
  • Disliked — All of it - dirty, not value for money, well below expectation as shown on website

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in December and enjoyed every minute of it. The staff were excellent especially the manager who is extremely helpful can always be found chatting with the guests. The thai massages at the spa were wonderful. Breakfast was adequate and our rooms were spacious and spotless. Aonang is a 10 minute walk from the hotel and there's a stretch of seafood restaurants at the corner (where the road bends). In the afternoons, there are a few street vendors along the main road outside the hotel. You can get a very yummy bowl of chicken noodles for only 20 baht. I would recommend this hotel because it is inexpensive, provides great service and is also quite conveniently located.
