The Golden Beach Resort was a lovely place to unwind and start to develop a tan. Just a few minutes level walk away from a busy resort with countless restaurants and long tail boat 'terminal' but yet very quiet and immediately adjacent to the sea.
Our room on the 2nd floor was lovely, although the sea view was rather restricted by the coconut tree just in front of our balcony, but that also provided some welcome shade at times. Our friends next door had a few problems with the electrics in their room (lights came on during the night!) so we were all upgraded to garden pavilion rooms which were even nicer. Very large rooms, better equipped and bigger bathroom although ours on the ground floor rather missed out on the balcony. We had a small patio area with two garden chairs, but more exposed than a higher level balcony. Beds are quite firm of course, but you come to expect that in Thailand!
The hotel pool was lovely, very clean and warm with plenty of sunbeds for the number of residents at the time of our stay, and a few that offered partial shade through most of the day, which was very welcome in view of the intensity of the sun! There is a children's pool adjacent but otherwise I didn't spot much other activities in the hotel for children. A lovely feature was the caged birds that were lovingly cared for and brought out every morning to their perches where they sang during the day. The poolside drinks and snacks service was much appreciated as well.
The beach was not crowded and the water very warm and generally clean, although there were signs of perhaps droplets of diesel oil from the long tail boats just along the beach. There are no sunbeds on the beach, but we were very happy to stay by the hotel pool and wander down to the sea when we wanted to.
Food in the hotel was good. Large breakfast selection including English and Asian dishes and waitress service of tea (very weak) and coffee (very strong). The meals could be taken in the dining room or al-fresco on the terrace which was lovely in the evening, illuminated in the evening by all the hanging lamps. Evening meals were good with plenty of fish and good steaks, but sometimes we were disappointed that dishes we wanted to order from the menu were not available.
It was disappointing that there was no free WiFi in the hotel, but a friendly bar a few minutes away had that covered and was also a lovely place to sit and enjoy some good entertainment in the evenings.
The town itself was as you would expect a Thai resort to be, lots of restaurants with touts outside, and many Indian restaurants among them. Tables were generally crowded together, no A/C, and cheerful service of adequate meals but fairly inexpensive.
We caught the airport bus service from the airport to the hotel which was cheaper than going by taxi, but after touring a number of hotels dropping people off, we were eventually dropped off at the corner of the beach road and had to pull our own luggage along to the hotel. Not what we needed after a long day's travel and in the very warm conditions at Ao-Nang. A taxi would have been able to negotiate the narrow beach road and drop us off at the hotel reception and that is what we used n the way back - after negotiating a good price for the taxi ;-)
Altogether, a very enjoyable stay and heartily recommended.
