“Oasis of calm in a busy resort”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

The Golden Beach Resort was a lovely place to unwind and start to develop a tan. Just a few minutes level walk away from a busy resort with countless restaurants and long tail boat 'terminal' but yet very quiet and immediately adjacent to the sea.

Our room on the 2nd floor was lovely, although the sea view was rather restricted by the coconut tree just in front of our balcony, but that also provided some welcome shade at times. Our friends next door had a few problems with the electrics in their room (lights came on during the night!) so we were all upgraded to garden pavilion rooms which were even nicer. Very large rooms, better equipped and bigger bathroom although ours on the ground floor rather missed out on the balcony. We had a small patio area with two garden chairs, but more exposed than a higher level balcony. Beds are quite firm of course, but you come to expect that in Thailand!

The hotel pool was lovely, very clean and warm with plenty of sunbeds for the number of residents at the time of our stay, and a few that offered partial shade through most of the day, which was very welcome in view of the intensity of the sun! There is a children's pool adjacent but otherwise I didn't spot much other activities in the hotel for children. A lovely feature was the caged birds that were lovingly cared for and brought out every morning to their perches where they sang during the day. The poolside drinks and snacks service was much appreciated as well.

The beach was not crowded and the water very warm and generally clean, although there were signs of perhaps droplets of diesel oil from the long tail boats just along the beach. There are no sunbeds on the beach, but we were very happy to stay by the hotel pool and wander down to the sea when we wanted to.

Food in the hotel was good. Large breakfast selection including English and Asian dishes and waitress service of tea (very weak) and coffee (very strong). The meals could be taken in the dining room or al-fresco on the terrace which was lovely in the evening, illuminated in the evening by all the hanging lamps. Evening meals were good with plenty of fish and good steaks, but sometimes we were disappointed that dishes we wanted to order from the menu were not available.

It was disappointing that there was no free WiFi in the hotel, but a friendly bar a few minutes away had that covered and was also a lovely place to sit and enjoy some good entertainment in the evenings.

The town itself was as you would expect a Thai resort to be, lots of restaurants with touts outside, and many Indian restaurants among them. Tables were generally crowded together, no A/C, and cheerful service of adequate meals but fairly inexpensive.

We caught the airport bus service from the airport to the hotel which was cheaper than going by taxi, but after touring a number of hotels dropping people off, we were eventually dropped off at the corner of the beach road and had to pull our own luggage along to the hotel. Not what we needed after a long day's travel and in the very warm conditions at Ao-Nang. A taxi would have been able to negotiate the narrow beach road and drop us off at the hotel reception and that is what we used n the way back - after negotiating a good price for the taxi ;-)

Altogether, a very enjoyable stay and heartily recommended.

The hotel was clean (for being in a third world country), away from the busy street, right on the beach and offered decent food. The hotel is next to many other hotels where you can wander for a bite to eat or a massage. The beach has monkeys roaming freely. We enjoyed our stay.

We had the garden pavilion room. Traveled with my mom and my 2 year old. Location is great, as it is right on the beach, away from the main street but at the same time just a 5 minutes walk. Staff very friendly, room was spacious, breakfast was plenty and diverse. Strongly recommend the place if you chose AoNang. Pool is amazing, they put a cot in our room without even requesting it, you have breakfast by the beachfront. The only down part is that it has only paid wifi which is expensive- but managers are aware of this and they plan to make it available and free. After all, one goes on holiday away from the digital world, right?

Room Tip: pavilion rooms are spacious and well placed

We selected Golden Beach Resort based on its location next to the Ao Nang Beach and went there with a slight bit of apprehension as some of the TA reviews have been anything but complimentary. But after staying there for six nights in one of the pavilion rooms we have no complaints against the hotel and really enjoyed our stay.
The location is superb. Next to the beach, near to all the shops and restaurants but as it is near to the end of a small road, also calm and quite. Our pickup from Phuket airport was waiting and when we reached the hotel our room was ready for us although we were there slightly early. The room itself was specious, clean and properly furnished and was surrounded by plants and trees. Unfortunately mosquitoes were also present and we were advised not to keep the door open during evenings. But the mosquito problem was faced by us all over Ao Nang and is not a particular problem of this hotel. The attached bathroom was big and had both shower and bath facilities. Our only complain is there should have been a mirror within the room and not only in the bathroom. The hotel provides tea/coffee facility, which was properly restocked every day, and bathrobes and robber slippers for pool usage. The housekeeping service was good and responsive and we are very happy with the overall staff service of the hotel be it the reception staff or the travel desk, with whom we booked our Phang Nga tour. The room also features a safe to keep your valuables, which we used without any problems. The room air conditioner worked fine and the water pressure was good. In fact we are only unhappy with the hotel restaurant called “Thai Thai” as it took ages for them to serve the food and the quality was nothing great. We liked the nearby Phra Nang Inn restaurant much better. The other slight problem, as with rest of Thailand, we encountered was English language skill of the staff which was not great but manageable with a bit of common sense.
The hotel pool is large and clean and has a dramatic background of hills. There are all kinds of shops and restaurants within walking distance from the hotel including the ticket office for the boat to Railay. My wife tried the massage service of the hotel and was quite happy. Our suggestion for massage will be to take advantage of the off pick rate during the day. The buffet breakfast, which includes both Thai and international food, was good but not great.
Overall we were very happy with the location, facilities and service and have no problem in recommending this hotel to others. Maybe some of the earlier reviewers faced a more difficult time at this hotel but we will have no problem in going back there.

My most recent stay here was my 3rd visit, so i guess they have something going for them.
In saying that there are several issues with G.B.
We were there celebrating a birthday with 4 couples. Three of the reservations were messed up, when they arrived there were NO rooms available for the first 3 nights, they wanted to put them up in a shabby hotel .To date they have not received a refund for those first 3 nights. I arrived several days later and luckily mine was available, so no problem there. My daughter had contacted me to let me know what had happened so being quite concerned emailed them to confirm my booking and ...NO reply. I had also tried to email several weeks before as i usually do just to confirm all our reservations and no reply.
They do not answer emails!!!!
Wifi is expensive ...and doesn't necessarily work all the time, and getting a refund is hard. Almost all other accomodations i have stayed in Thailand throw in free wifi, and they were all much cheaper than G.B.
The beach just past the massage huts (several hundred metres from G.B) had sewerage flowing into the ocean... several of our group who swam in the sea got quite ill the next day.... and when we wanted to "Purchase" more water for those who were dehydrating back in their rooms they would not put it on the account, they insisted on cash ????
The location is fabulous
The pavillion suites are lovely, quite large and well appointed....although the price is high for Thailand.
The pool is lovely, the breakfast good, and most staff try their hardest.
I don't think i would return again, it and most definitely not in the high season, as it was very busy with lots of tourists and the treatment

The hotel is nicely located in a more quiet part of the beach (it is off the main road) but the service quality and noise from the longtail-boats made the stay less enjoyable. The food in the restaurant was excellent, but service was a disaster. Usually service in restaurants in Thailand is very fast and very friendly. Here it was neither. The pool area is nice and clean but rather noisy because the longtail boats to Railay Beach and other destinations keep roaring in and out of Ao Nang all day long. This is not the fault of the Golden Beach Resort but it made my stay less enjoyable than it could be.

Like a previous reviewer said, it is hard to rate. I did like it a lot but at the price we paid (in Thailand) I had a few minor issues (we paid $135US/night for a Pavillion suite). Location is great in terms of being right on the beach (just across a walkway). It is also a quick walk to the hub for longtails to other islands and to the main strip of restaurants/bars in Ao Nang. Pavilion suite was nice. Not superluxrious but pretty nice. It was odd to me that they had pushed a twin bed next to the king bed to make one huge sort-of bed but I ended up really liking it. The ground are well landscaped. The staff is extremely friendly but not empowered to give much to I suspect.

Breakfast was actually great. Buffet style with both American and Thai dishes. The breakfast area is right by the beach and a great atmosphere in the morning before the heat takes over. We also ordered room service twice and it was really good quality Thai Food. Higher than the reviews of their restaurant online led me to expect. We never dined at the restaurant other than breakfast or room service though.

The two things I did not like:

#1--They will only give you one key. The key controls all of the electricity in the room (including the air conditioner). Lest you think you can put another card in the slot--it is RFID--so that won't work. So your room will be realy, really hot when you get in and it will take a while to cool off. To be fair, eventually it got more than plenty cold for sleeping.

Internet = Total Ripoff

They have 2 computers in the lobby for public use. Inexplicably, these do not have internet access. You still have to purchase one of their Wi-Fi cards to access the internet on their lobby computers. They have several options to purchase Wi-Fi. Most charge by THE MINUTE. The only unlimited option they have is for a week and it is 1500 Baht. We were staying for 6 days so we grudgingly paid up. On night 3 it stopped working so I asked for a refund. They said that was impossible as it was non-refundable and that it was only out in our bungalow but we were free to still use it in the lobby. I felt like that was poor customer service. More on a policy basis than the staff, whose hands seemed genuinely tied on the matter.
