I came to this place with my wife and two boys. Having grown up near the sea during your younger years, I really missed the smell of the sea, the sand and the wide open space. I was not dissapointed by coming to Ao Thalen which is around 40 kms from Ao Nang were most farangs hang out. It's being out of the way is perhaps one reason why this places is still so pretty. The limestone cliffs along the bay is simply gorgeous! Spectacular would be too light a word to describe this place.

There are two places where you can hire a kayak guide and equipment. The Sea Kayak operator is the larger of the two. We preferred to go to the smaller - community operated kayak operation that is supported by an international Non-governmental organization. One word about going on a kayak trip is to check for tidal schedule. No really very enjoyable to go kayaking during low tide as you could get stuck in the heavy mudflats.

Another activity you could do off Ao Thalen is to go island hopping. We went to a few nearby islands. One rather spectacular island was Koh Hong. This is a very strange island because it is shaped like a letter "C". There is a narrow entrance to the center of the island. Once inside, it looks like a lake.

Really highly recommended. I hope you enjoy your trip.

It is fun taking kayaking tour in this bay. The mangroove jungle is challenging for us to take a good ride.
