“Beautiful unique resort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2012

We stayed here for 3 nights after a week in Samui. The taxi ride from the airport was about 40 minutes and cost about 600 baht for four of us. The resort is lovely, surrounded by huge cliffs and bushland. Lots of natural tropical gardens, very well maintained and gorgeous flowers everywhere. The reception were very nice, the ladies were polite and friendly although the guys not as much. The rooms are beautiful and the timber work stunning, we had a room on the second level at the back of the pool. The rooms are very small with a bed in the centre of a round room and a small cabinet as well as a small sink, toilet and shower adjoining and there is no space for storing any luggage which made it a little cramped however that was the only complaint. The walk into town was about ten minutes and was an easy walk with barely any traffic as it's a back street. The courtesy bus into town was very handy as well and ran often however a tuk tuk ride back from town only cost us between 30 baht to 50baht each so this was no trouble and getting one at any hour of the night was easy. The resort was very quiet, lots of people staying there but we barely saw anyone, the pool was usually empty and the pool bar serves nice cocktails. The breakfast was quite nice, the best fresh fruit and most delicious toast I had in Thailand. Ao nang town was great fun, lots going on however a more laid back style than Samui where we'd come from. We hired a long boat for a day which cost us about 3000 baht for a full day and between four of us this was excellent value, we were taken to four islands and had a fantastic day. The bars and nightlife were good fun and the shopping I enjoyed as well, most prices were very cheap for clothing and souvenirs. Food in the area was great, we found an amazing Thai restaurant along the main street not far from the resort and we feasted on all types of entrees and mains and including drinks paid around $45 Aussie. It was so good we went back the second night and it didn't disappoint. Look for the plastic tables and chairs under bamboo huts, you walk down some steps to the restaurant and the husband serving and wife in the kitchen cooking and numerous dogs running around. Best food we ate in Thailand by far! We also booked a day trip through reception which included a half day kayak trip just out of town, we kayaked in a mangrove and climbed through a cave, they provided a delicious 3 course lunch and then we were taken to the nosey parkers elephant reserve where we rode an elephant for an hour. The elephants were well taken care of and treated very well and we were told they were very well loved by their Thai owner! The ride lasted an hour and the rider Sun was amazing, he jumped off and we rode Lulu around for about 20 minutes directed by his voice commands while he took photos on our camera. We were then given fresh fruit to hand feed the elephants. All this for about $50 Aussie for the entire day! We also purchased an enlarged, laminated photo for 100 baht which was great value. Ao Nang was a lovely place and would be a great place to spend a week or more as there were so many activities. We enjoyed our stay at this resort however next time we would probably book at the cliff view resort in town as it looked very comparable but was closer to town. For a relaxing quiet stay in a resort, this would be the perfect place but we spent most of our time out and about. I have to say though that the ladies at reception were incredibly helpful, right down to a last minute booking on the ferry to Phi Phi and a transfer out to the pier with about 20 minutes notice so we are very grateful for their fantastic service and would recommend others stay here for sure.

Room Tip: They are all very close to the pool however the second level rooms have a lovely view of the cliffs...

When it cames to rate this place, you need to decide how you rate them. If you say this is a resort in the quite gardens and you are ready for all small problems around, I would give 5 points. If you rate them as quite expensive 4 star hotel, I would give them 1 point.
With no discusion, the place is just beatiful. The surroundings are nice, looking to huge rocks, settled in well kept gardens. Rooms looks nice in all the wood decor, quite all around. The reason why we selected this place was to get quite place in nice surroundings and we got this.

BUT, you must not expect a service of the hotel at all, I had a feeling more like in family motel.
Our biggest issue was - were - cockroachs - big cockroachs..
We enjoyed the wood decor of the room until we realized in our first night, that we are not alone in the room. Once comming back from dinner to the room in evening, we saw 2 huge ones (some 5-8 cm..) just in the middle of the room. Once we light up, they left to the wholes in the floor. However we have claimed this problem at the reception, they gave us only the spray to kill them - if we can catch them.. Finaly, there is not much to do, obviously, hotel management does not care to much about this. Just to make sure, this was not problem of our room only, we met other people from the resort heaving same stories. - so - be ready for this if you decide to stay at this place - lets say it is a price you have to pay for staying in the nature. Still, we did not sleep well at all because of this.
¨
The way how they clean the room is average at best.. - again you should expect "motel quality"

Be ready that however the hotel is in quite area and there is no noise from street, you may be disturbed by other people who stay late in evening / early morning by the pool and reception. Since the resort is very small and walls just thin, your sleep quality may be affected by this noise.
Pool area - the area is beatiful. Once you lay on the beds under the palms, looking to the rocks, you forgive the problems with cockroachs - but - the pool was very dirty when we came, you nearly do not see your legs in the water - after 2 days, they cleaned water so it was ok than. Water in the pool is just hot - like coffee..
Unforutnately, they do not care much about pool area, we ate some food from restaurant by the pool, leaving our plates next to the bed. The plates was there still next morning.. The same for beds by the pool, matraces are dirty, they do not care much for this.

One more issue - we have used hotel laundry, they have lost one piece of our clothes. However they give us service free of charge, that would not cover the price of lost trousers. They charge 60 bath per kilo of clothes for laundry but we had a feeling that they cheat with the weight..

Finaly, they was trying to add 3% charge when we want to pay our stay by credit card. I have argued that this was not in the conditions so they did not charge this, but still, be ready for this..

One more thing we did not like - there is only cold water in the bathroom to wash your hands. If you want to wash your hands / wash some clothes by hot water, you must step into the shower..

Food in the hotel restaurant is of very low quality and quite expensive, we ate there once only and did not like it.

Room Tip: Rooms close to reception are noisy because thin walls of the room. Try to select rooms close to rest...

If you love nature, gardens, a quiet atmosphere and traditonal Thai Style accomodation then this is the place for you. If you dont mind a walk then it is also the place for you. If you want to relax and not be hassled this is the place for you. We loved it and loved the fact it was out of the main area which is noisy. Polite friendly staff, free shuttle on time and from the pool you can look up to the stunning cliffs. I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Upstairs for a view and downstairs if you dont want to walk upstairs!!

The best thing about this hotel is the fact that is set in truly beautiful surroundings - at the base of a cliff and surrounded by tropical gardens. This is the ideal place to relax and hang around by the pool. The location is good too. It's about a 10 minute walk to town and a 15-20 minute walk to the beach or 3 minutes by shuttle bus. The room were nicely designed, and the staff were friendly and spoke good English. The only downside was the TV had very poor reception. Other than that, we really enjoyed our stay.

I recently stayed at phu pha for five nights with a friend and we were more than happy with our choice. the hotel is situated just out of town about 10- 15 min walk but they do supply hotel shuttle bus which we used most of the time, its nice quiet location was great to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the town. the hotel was clean and pleasant and the staff were always smiling, we were more than happy with the breakfast selection i would definatley stay here again.

The hotel is in a nice green surrounding but 10 min walk down a small hill outside of Ao Nang.
They offer a free shuttle service to town but the last service back to hotel is about 10pm.
Our deluxe room was spacious, second floor and with two balconies. At our arrival there was a massive invasion of big red ants on both balconies but staff has killed it with some spray....
The seats on it was very uncomfortable, only a wooden bench.
Breakfast was boring and not filled up. Staff in Restaurant is very friendly but a little bit "unqualified".
I think for that price you will find better options..... The green surroundings little bit outside of Ao Nang are not worth this.

Phu Pha is a strictly average sort of place. It is clean. I can give them that. But after staying at a similarly priced resort in Ao Nang (Phu Phi Maan) the two cannot be compared in quality. The bungalows at Phu Pha have a woodsy feel and that would be okay if the gaps in the windows were not filled by napkins. The place seems a bit run down. The breakfast was okay with inferior service. We could forget all that if the staff was helpful. Even on simple questions, the staff always looked as if it was a problem to answer. No smiles. No appearance of wanting us here. Most of the time we just got a grunt and a point. The other negative is the resort's location. It is far off the main road and since the transportation is highly irregular we found it barely useful having to walk several kilometers or take an overpriced taxi. Choose a different place. You will be glad you did. I highly recommend Phu Phi Mann.
