The Crown and Castle is ideally situated to explore the Suffolk coast. Orford Ness is a meander from the village, and Orford Castle is well worth a visit; Snape Maltings, Aldebrough and Thorpeness are also all in easy reach.

We managed to secure a one night deal for our anniversary and were allocated one of the ten garden rooms. We also managed to arrive early enough to get a parking space. We were met at reception by Ruth and David, who were friendly and welcoming. David showed us to our room, braving the ‘British summer’ to take our bag, explaining about the lack of mobile reception and the lack of satellite TV. From the outside it looked like our room was in a terrace of summer houses; inside it was an unpretentious, bright and airy room, simply decorated with a coarse carpet, a large bed and two armchairs. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate was available in the room, with fresh milk and an amazing box of Teoni’s cookies – which, without David’s warning, would easily have spoiled our appetite. My gratitude for well lined curtains - apparently promising a good night's sleep -was only diminished by the light which penetrated the blind at the front door and which woke me very early - eye masks are recommended! However, what a relief to find hypoallergenic bedding! The bathroom was adequate, with a good sized mirror and Arran Aromatics bath gel, soaps and shampoo.
From our rear window we could look across the garden (which had plenty of picnic benches for guests’ use, as well as a table and chairs on our veranda) and see Orford Castle. Dinner and breakfast are served in the main hotel building, and an umbrella was provided for us to get to the hotel in the dry (much appreciated in mid-July!) Aperitifs are served while you select from the menu – we were thrilled that there was a separate vegetarian menu available on request. They have a varied and good value wine list. Dinner began with an amazing sourdough bread from the Pump Street Bakery, and was finished with a very nice selection of cheese from Neal’s Yard (and when we asked to double up on the vegetarian cheeses as a replacement for the others, no one raised an eyebrow). The chocolate cake was superb! A serving of toast at breakfast also featured beautiful bread, and a pain au chocolat and croissant. The staff were friendly; the service relaxed, informal but efficient (and the menus featured nice explanations as to how the toast is served at breakfast – one of my chief bug bears - and why you are left to pour the wine.)

This is not a chic, city centre establishment, but a comfortable place to unwind at the weekend – and somewhere I’d happily recommend to friends and family alike.

This was our first visit to the Crown and Castle. We really enjoyed our stay. The food was great and included lots of locally caught fish, and Lobster Thermidor as part of a special package. we would highly recommend this as a relaxing hotel in a lovely part of the Country. The hotel is very dog friendly, we took our dog and had a garden room which was a lovely room with its own patio chairs and table and garden just for residents. Overall, the service was excellent we had a lovely stay. Highly recommended.

We made a late booking with regard to the £190.00 B + B & evening meal package for 1 night.
We were shown to a small room at the end of the corridor in the main pub. The room was very small and shabby, wallpaper hanging off the wall. The bathroom lacked shower screen (we were advised of this at booking), the floor was lino and creeked very loudly. Visits to the bathroom at night inevitably woke the other guest. Worse was the constant loud humming of the kitchen extractor fan within a few feet of our room.
One felt that the constant reminders of the "do's and don'ts" of the establishment were a little tedious, at our age, one would assume we have all the coathangers we need without resorting to stealing their's.
The evening meal was "interesting", my squid was definitely overcooked and rubbery, my wife's oysters were excellent, my main course of lamb rump was mediocre.

Obviously we regret this customer found his/her experience dissapointing (sic). We freely acknowledge that the Good House double rooms were no more than adequate at the time of the stay, although the term 'shabby' is rather harsh. Since then they have been completely refurbished, including new bathrooms. However, why a visit to the bathroom should wake the other guest any more than in any other en-suite bathroom is a mystery as is the constant humming of the kitchen extractor as this is ALWAYS switched off by 11.00pm at the latest.

The remark about constant reminders is equally mysterious as there are no notices whatsoever in this room, nor in the public rooms, other than the fire escape instructions. As for the wooden (non-security) hangers, all they have is a little ribbon around the hook which says, "I belong to the C&C", and it is there more for guest awareness than as a warning.

No mention was made of the food (or anything else if it comes to that) at the time of the stay, which is very regrettable as we would have willingly credited or replaced the unsatisfactory dishes.

We had a garden room once again but this time without our dog. It was lovely to visit at a different time of year and the weather was good enough to enjoy a river trip on our anniversary. The food was once again fantastic and choosing something off the menu quite difficult. The staff are brilliant and really make a difference. We know we will be back.

No high boutique chic and chefs egos here (both of which we avoid at all costs)..just good people doing their job really, really well. All requests greeted with a smile,English efficiency at it's very best...What a pleasure.
Good rooms,well thought out,spotlessly clean
Truly delicious food how YOU want it,great wine selection with no-quibble exchange
But for our money,it's all about the service, effortless, professional and a genuine desire to please. The staff are, without exception wonderful.
The customer is king here...worth every single penny

Room Tip: We loved the Garden rooms
