We always go to Suffolk at lease once a year and on this occasion decided to have a few days away before the New Year. We always frequent the places we know will give us good quality food and the Butley Orford Oysterage is one place which is consistent with quality and a place we have been to many times, for lunch and dinner. We have 2 negatives on this particular visit which was on a Tuesday lunchtime, we pre-booked, however when we arrived 20 minutes after it had opened it was freezing inside and I sat there feeling very cold. It would have been good to come into a warm restaurant to begin with. It was a very cold day outside and I feel that if you are going to open for a short time to cover lunches the restaurant should be warm for its visitors to arrive to. My partner had the smoked fish selection for his main, and was slightly disappointed by the quantity of squid which was more in proportion than the other ingredients, it would have been nicer to have had more mussels (there were only 2) and perhaps some prawns which were not there at all. He had the whitebait which he enjoyed. I had the cod with crumbed top which was delicious for my main, a very generous portion and the fish pate to start.
On the whole a good quality lunch but expensive, the seating is so uncomfortable and no music i did think that soft background music would have been more relaxing particularly as it was so cold there.

We have been visiting this little restaurant for over 25 years and love it. Of course it has changed over the years, but not by much. The most noticeable changes are: 1) the pricing and 2) the portion sizes. One is going up, the other coming down, no prizes for guessing which is which!
Restaurateurs seem to forget the relationship between price and customer expectations, as prices increase one's expectations increase accordingly and things, little things, should change to enhance the perception of value; for example butter shouldn't be served in pre pack portions, these are downmarket and fiddly to unwrap (and probably as costly as preparing a small ramekin with butter) and my wife is very upset the size of the smoked cods roe portion is half what it used to be. Lunch for 4 cost us £150 which included a single £30 bottle of wine so it isn't cheap! We still love it!
Don't visit this restaurant without a walk down to the hard overlooking the river, one of my favourite spots on earth!

We've been coming to the Oysterage intermittently and when in Aldeburgh for many years and have never been disappointed. Given in my experience that all restaurants tend to go through the odd purple patch, I just find the sheer consistency of the experience surprising, but very happily so.

As previous comments indicate this is not the most comfortable place to sit. It is simple: hard surfaces, marble topped iron tables covered in paper cloths, chairing that looks as if pinched from the village hall, in rooms that certainly from décor, have changed very little since the restaurant was originally set up. BUT the food, again simply prepared fish, very fresh and properly cooked.

The menu offers a mix of home smoked fish products, local oysters, taramasalata made from home-smoked cods roes, all either baked, grilled or fried. There is also a daily list of specials. The last meal we had consisted of smoked cods roe, some very plump and delicious oysters, herb crusted cod - a special - and the fish was meltingly soft and very tasty - mixed grill, where due to personal taste there were some substitutions. Puddings eaten that meal included an apple and marzipan tart - a special - and perhaps the least successful dish in that the apple was too sour for the marzipan base - and a rich chocolate pudding.

Total cost, including a bottle of Sancerre at a little under £30, came to around £130 for four without service. So, not the cheapest meal, but in terms of quality very good value and for us, probably the best meal of the weekend.

The restaurant is open for lunch every day of the week and in the evenings on a Friday and Saturday. Fish and meat products including those smoked on site are on sale at their adjoining shop and we invariably go home with a large smoked cods roe.

Arrived and were initially ignored by one waitress.
We were then offered a choice of tables by another person and given menu's.
We sat for at least fifteen minutes and were neither offered a drink or an order taken. Two other couples arrived after us,they were seated and offered and served drinks, in a different part of the restaurant.
Having eaten here in the past on a number of occasions we were extremely saddened to find that the standard of service had deteriorated so markedly.
We will definately not be returning and not recommending this restaurant again!
Suggest they employ some competent staff!
