Pont Romain de St Christophe
Reviewed May 27, 2012

St. Christophe is a troglodyte fort and town, set three hundred feet above the road and the Vezere River, it stretches across an area of more than half a mile, is made up of five terraces, which were first hollowed out 60 million years ago by erosion of the river. It was probably inhabited 50,000 BC by Neanderthal man, and the by the Cro-Magnon man some 25,000 BC. and right up to the Middle Ages in the 10th Century, when a fortress was build to protect the populations from the Norman invasion. There are reconstructions of the houses, but you can see the outlines of a cowshed, slaughter house, smokehouse, a safe, a town, a church, a look out system. Reconstructions show how people winched up water from the river, and much more. A real interest for adults and children alike.
