“Classy, comfy and great company”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

Just returned from a weekend at Sandhill. Only coming from the other side of Cornwall, some people thought we were mad for choosing Gunnislake for a weekend away! Not only is the location superb, with lots to explore on Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley, but the bright lights of Plymouth also close by, but the gorgeous house should be a film set - classically and tastefully decorated with enough lumps and bumps to show it's the real old thing. Don't panic though - it also has all the comforts (electric blanket, underfloor heating in the bathroom, mega-ace power shower and the best bread I have ever eaten for toast) of somewhere far more modern.

Great, easy company too - I'm always wary of B and Bs and having to talk about the owner's grandchildren/health/blah blah but Mary and Andrew were both easy and interesting to talk to. We'll be back.

You can definetely stay with us again! What a simply lovely review and thank you for taking the time and trouble, in this hectic world, to sit down and write it. We are so delighted that you enjoyed your stay and that you have given us the best accolade we could wish for - that you will come and stay with us again; we will be delighted to see you and carry on the conversation. Hopefully, we will meet you again when the weather is a bit kinder and the garden is at its very best in the Spring.

Despite terrible weather conditions, we have just returned from a lovely, relaxing stay at Sandhill House. The hosts are warm and accommodating, the house packed full of character, and the bedrooms beautifully decorated. Great thought had gone into the delicious breakfasts, with Mary sourcing as much local produce as possible. This is a property clearly run from the guest's perspective, and based on the owners' experiences of staying away from home over the years. From the moment we arrived in the pouring rain (when we were greeted with a warm smile and a hot pot of tea and a chance to talk to Mary and Andrew about their restoration of the property), through to the moment we departed, nothing was too much trouble. We really couldn't recommend this place enough, and can't wait to return in the summer when we can explore the beautiful gardens...

Thank you very much indeed for taking the time and trouble to write this most wonderful review when I know you are very busy people. We are so delighted you enjoyed your stay and even happier to know that you are planning to come back again, when hopefully, instead of a hot pot of tea to greet you, it will be something nice and cool on a Summers day. Thank you very much for booking to stay with us and your support and we shall very much look forward to seeing you again in the Summer.

We stayed at Sandhill House in the Summer and we're very please to find it listed on tripadvisor. It really is a spectacular place. The house has been beautifully restored and the gardens and views are breathtaking. Mary and Andrew are wonderful hosts and we were made to feel very welcome. They have a great knowledge of the area and we were given lots of tips about places to visit on our stay. The breakfast was delicious and all local produce.
We would highly recommend a stay at Sandhill House for those looking for a peaceful and tranquil break away.

We came here to be near Dartmoor where we spent most of the time walking. It was lovely to come back to this beautiful house. It is full of history and nicely restored and yet with all the creature comforts.
The couple who run this were very attentive to our needs and made us felt welcome.
I must say the bed was brilliant and we had the best night sleep for a long time. The only thing i would have like the place to be a bit warmer.

We arrived on a chilly afternoon in mid November. We were welcomed by Mary who told us about the history of the house and offered us tea, which we gratefully accepted in the pillared tea/coffee room. The house has a beautiful outlook across the valley and the formal garden looked splendid in autumn, and was being tended by the gardener whilst we were there. In the house, we were taken up the impressive staircase and along the corridor to the rooms. Mary offered us a free upgrade to a larger en-suite bedroom which we accepted. Mary’s attention to detail was impressive. The en-suite had been recently refurbished to a very high standard, all the little extras that you might hope for in a room were there (such as fresh flowers and bottled water), and the bed linen was of high quality. We decided to walk to the “Rising Sun” for our evening meal. This took less than 15 minutes but involved negotiating a very steep (downhill) narrow lane. Our torches were needed. On arrival at this cosy 17th century inn we were given a warm welcome by the landlord and we tucked into homemade meals (the steak and mushroom pie was particularly good) and Thatchers Gold cider next to the woodburner. We took the longer route back along the Calstock Road towards the centre of Gunnislake and then back up the main road to Sandhill House. The main road was paved and lit but still involved a fair uphill incline. The entire walk took less than 25 minutes. Back at the house we chose our breakfasts from a huge list of options provided by Mary. In the morning we made our way to the breakfast room. The light was streaming into the room which was tastefully decorated and complete with period furniture. The long brown wood table provided an impressive centrepiece to the room. We sat near the window at a round table and enjoyed an excellent breakfast. The produce is sourced locally wherever possible, and indeed Mary took delivery of some local honey whilst we were there. We very much enjoyed our stay. Thank you Mary for looking after us so well.

Room Tip: Both the rooms were very good but the larger room was more spacious and worth the extra money.

A wonderful place to stay, whether on business or holiday
Mary & Andrew are the perfect hosts, very friendly and they made me feel welcome.
Breakfast was perfect, all fresh and local produce and you must try their own apple juice!
I'll certainly be staying there again.
Thank you to you both
Kind Regards
Carl

Andrew was the perfect host and made me feel very welcome. The house and garden are stunning, along with the magnificent views across the Tamar valley. The room was large, beautifully decorated, and with an extremely comfortable bed. After an excellent night's sleep, I awoke to a stunning dawn, with mist shrouding the valley and two roe deer grazing in the field in front of the house. The breakfast was also exceptional with tremendous choice and cooked to perfection. It kept me going all day! Thank you, Andrew, for a very memorable stay - I hope to return soon.

It has recently under-gone major refurbishment with guest room facilities including king size beds, beautifully appointed en-suites, free wifi, and Freeview TV/DVD and a hospitality tray in each room. This luxury countryside retreat is perfectly located at the gateway to explore both Devon and Cornwall and also historic Tavistock which is just 10 minutes drive away. This B&B is run on an ethical basis, with local and ethically sourced produce. ... more   less
