We recently stayed at the Statham Lodge hotel as we were attending a family wedding reception there. On arrival the building and grounds looked beautiful. Our first impressions of the hotel were dashed though by the unfriendly faces on reception, although were checked in efficiently and told where to find our room and how to use the key etc... the woman behind reception looked as if she would rather be anywhere else in the world but there!
To get to our room we either had to go back outside and go through what looked like the back entrance to the kitchen or go to a staircase near the bar then go upstairs, and back down some other stairs to our room on the ground floor! We could access the same corridor later when the function room was open to go through.
Our room itself was quite small and although it looked as if the bathroom had been recently refurbished and the room had a lick of paint there was a funny smell in the room. We found the sparce tea and coffee making facilities in the bottom of the wardrobe. Why in the wardrobe I don't know? All in all I expected more for the price we payed for the room.
I will select excellent for the service for everything other than reception which lets the hotel down in my opinion.
On the plus side (there are some :0) .....the rest of the staff were friendly and the service staff during the reception were excellent, absolutley 1st class and the hotel had obviously made it as beautiful as possible for the wedding. The meal, buffet and breakfast food were all delicious. The large bar area and garden furniture were perfect places to sit and relax.
All in all I would not hesitate to return to the hotel for a meal, or even book a function if I lived in the area however for a £100 per night for the room I was a little dissapointed and probably wouldn't stay again.
