“Lovely B&B In Classic Spanish Village”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

I'd looked at the area around Can Massa and the village of La Pera on Street View and wasn't impressed. Then read the TA reviews and also realised it was in the Alastair Sawday b&b guide and that was enough to book a week there last month. We wanted a base for exploring the Costa Brava area, both coast and inland, and Can Massa fitted the bill perfectly.

Once there, we were delighted with our choice. The village itself is delightful and due to the streets being too steep and narrow for their camera car, Street View didn't do it justice.

We had a triple bedroom off a long room previously used as a dining room. The room had a/c which was 100% necessary as we were there in a heatwave when temps reached 42c. Sleep wasn't a problem and it was very quiet every night.

Josep wasn't around when we arrived but despite his wife not speaking much English, we muddled through with sign language and a smattering of Spanish from us. When he returned after work, Josep welcomed us again and explained everything.

Breakfasts were fabulous and healthy (ok apart from the delicious chocolate croissants) and set us up perfectly each morning. I'll include photos of 'the spread' with this review. The juices and coffee were kept topped up on the occasions when there were a lot of guests.

Josep told us about local sights to see and there were plenty of leaflets available. We were usually out from after breakfast till late every evening so weren't able to make use of the large garden and raised family pool but we did have a few games of table tennis on one occasion.

The location was perfect for our needs.....to explore the Costa Brava and we rarely had to drive more than 50 miles every day. La Pera is very small village with only one small restaurant with quite a limited menu but we did eat there twice.

The price was right, the breakfasts were great and the area was beautiful. If you want a base for touring around Girona, this should be it. One point to note is that they prefer cash. When we started having to collect it together on the last morning before leaving (we preferred to keep cash for day to day use and use credit cards for B&Bs), they did struggle with our card. I think it was mostly due to Josep not being around again.

Finally I knew it was the place for me (being 60 with heart issues) when I noticed that on the wall next to the telephone box just a few yards from Can Massa there was a portable defibrillator !

Room Tip: There are many to choose from so check them out when you get there. If in high summer, make sure th...

We stayed at Can Massa for a week in August. It's one of those rare places that is even better in real life than on its website! An old farmhouse, cleverly adapted and added to. We were there in a heatwave and the air conditioning in our bedroom was very welcome. It is clean, comfortable and characterful. Josep and his wife were very friendly and helpful: he speaks good English. His wife doesn't speak much English but she provides superb breakfasts, an excellent buffet which is slightly different every day. Best breakfast in Spain! The village of La Pera is pretty - worth seeing in itself - and La Pera is ideally placed for exploring both the Costa Brava and other lovely places inland such as Besalu. We went to different places every day, all interesting. A delightful place to stay. The room was great value and the breakfast (which was extra) was excellent value too. Thank you!

Room Tip: All rooms have bathrooms, all are quiet and they are built round a large central room - they are air...

Have just returned from 5 days at Can Massa with my family. We cannot praise the place highly enough- we booked for 2 nights and stayed for the rest of our time there. An incredibly nice family in a very lovely place. Fantastic breakfasts, ping pong and little pool for the kids in lovely walled garden. Josep and Carme couldn't be more helpful and kind. The village and surrounding area wonderful to explore, particularly on bikes that Josep arranges for you. Lovely bar in the village serving simple fresh food each evening. We will definately return.
Thank you!

The house is an authentic old farmhouse. The owners respected the structure, floors, furniture and tools from the past. They renovated the house with care and give guests a great service during the whole stay. Josep helped us with our activities schedule, giving us ideas and also bringing bycicles for rent and enjoy this beautiful land.

Don't miss the chance to relax at their porch, play cards, table tennis and enjoy the swimming pool and garden.

Very recommended!

My husband and I stumbled upon Can Massa during a month-long bicycle trip in Spain. We were looking for a place to stay for the night, but we were so charmed by this converted family farmhouse that we stayed for almost a week. Josep and his wife were friendly and helpful, our room was charming, comfortable and clean, and the breakfasts were the best we had in Spain. We liked being on the edge of a quiet medieval village surrounded by rural countryside and within biking distance of several other charming villages. This is a great area for bicycling and Josep was very knowledgeable about the local roads and sights. There was a local internet cafe right in La Pera (friendly, fun, simple meals -- but only open during the weekends) and a good restaurant 1km away in Pubol (also known for the Gala Dali castle.) We were very content here and would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The "blue" room with outdside terrace was very sweet.

We were met by the delightful Josep, who made us very welcome and gave us lots of useful local information, as well as booking a local restaurant for us all. A warming log fire was burning downstairs ! The rest of the house and our rooms were contstantly warm. There was a wonderful balance of great service and attention, without being intrusive in any way.
Breakfast the next morning was fit for royalty, including Josep's wife home made spinach tortilla!
If you are interested in mediaeval villages and beautiful countryside , this is an ideal spot to immerse yourself in the local culture, with a very homely and comfortable farmhouse to return to at the end of the day. The value for money is exceptional. We would definitely go again!
