I'd looked at the area around Can Massa and the village of La Pera on Street View and wasn't impressed. Then read the TA reviews and also realised it was in the Alastair Sawday b&b guide and that was enough to book a week there last month. We wanted a base for exploring the Costa Brava area, both coast and inland, and Can Massa fitted the bill perfectly.
Once there, we were delighted with our choice. The village itself is delightful and due to the streets being too steep and narrow for their camera car, Street View didn't do it justice.
We had a triple bedroom off a long room previously used as a dining room. The room had a/c which was 100% necessary as we were there in a heatwave when temps reached 42c. Sleep wasn't a problem and it was very quiet every night.
Josep wasn't around when we arrived but despite his wife not speaking much English, we muddled through with sign language and a smattering of Spanish from us. When he returned after work, Josep welcomed us again and explained everything.
Breakfasts were fabulous and healthy (ok apart from the delicious chocolate croissants) and set us up perfectly each morning. I'll include photos of 'the spread' with this review. The juices and coffee were kept topped up on the occasions when there were a lot of guests.
Josep told us about local sights to see and there were plenty of leaflets available. We were usually out from after breakfast till late every evening so weren't able to make use of the large garden and raised family pool but we did have a few games of table tennis on one occasion.
The location was perfect for our needs.....to explore the Costa Brava and we rarely had to drive more than 50 miles every day. La Pera is very small village with only one small restaurant with quite a limited menu but we did eat there twice.
The price was right, the breakfasts were great and the area was beautiful. If you want a base for touring around Girona, this should be it. One point to note is that they prefer cash. When we started having to collect it together on the last morning before leaving (we preferred to keep cash for day to day use and use credit cards for B&Bs), they did struggle with our card. I think it was mostly due to Josep not being around again.
Finally I knew it was the place for me (being 60 with heart issues) when I noticed that on the wall next to the telephone box just a few yards from Can Massa there was a portable defibrillator !
