Great surroundings in a small village just a few miles from Cambridge. Easy access from the M11 with on-site parking. Great building set in lovely gardens. If you're lucky enough to have decent weather it would be good to eat in the garden.
My family of four ate here on a Monday lunchtime. Not too busy but enough people that it didn't feel empty. We all chose from the lunch menu, which had a reasonable choice of dishes for each course. Service was excellent; attentive but not intrusive. When asked, we found the waiter had a good understanding of the food and drink on offer.
The price was £106 for the four of us, which was for 3 courses plus two glasses of wine, two beers and a fruit juice; not cheap, but not top restaurant prices either.
Food came well presented and was cooked well. Now, why "Nearly Wonderful" - the food lacked the wow! factor. It was very pleasant but just lacked that final something that turns a good dish into a great one. In comparison with a top restaurant, Alimentum (in Cambridge) for example, it was all a little ordinary allbeit about 75% of the price.
I will definitely go back and if the food notches up a step I would happily give 5 stars. Don't let me put you off, it is well worth a visit.
