Description: A fantastic Grade 2 listed building with a new conservatory overlooking its iconic pond. The food is Modern British/European with an emphasis on locally sourced, fresh, seasonal ingredients. The menu changes every 2 months with a specific cut of meat, fish, fowl or game being the focus of each menu. The Tickell is also a traditional country pub with wood burning stoves, great real ales and a very well considered wine list. The Tickell Arms is a former coaching inn which was transformed into a country pub/restaurant in the 1960's by the flamboyant Kim Tickell. With its striking blue exterior, eclectic decor and service it gained a level of notoriety. Kim Tickell passed away in 1991 and afterwards the building lost a lot of its lustre & appeal. It had been closed 2 years before we undertook a major refurbishment to restore it to something approaching its former glory.

Great surroundings in a small village just a few miles from Cambridge. Easy access from the M11 with on-site parking. Great building set in lovely gardens. If you're lucky enough to have decent weather it would be good to eat in the garden.

My family of four ate here on a Monday lunchtime. Not too busy but enough people that it didn't feel empty. We all chose from the lunch menu, which had a reasonable choice of dishes for each course. Service was excellent; attentive but not intrusive. When asked, we found the waiter had a good understanding of the food and drink on offer.

The price was £106 for the four of us, which was for 3 courses plus two glasses of wine, two beers and a fruit juice; not cheap, but not top restaurant prices either.

Food came well presented and was cooked well. Now, why "Nearly Wonderful" - the food lacked the wow! factor. It was very pleasant but just lacked that final something that turns a good dish into a great one. In comparison with a top restaurant, Alimentum (in Cambridge) for example, it was all a little ordinary allbeit about 75% of the price.

I will definitely go back and if the food notches up a step I would happily give 5 stars. Don't let me put you off, it is well worth a visit.

We arranged to meet two friends for lunch at the Tickell last week and it turned out to be one of the sunniest days we've seen. The new manager Eric could not have been more helpful. 'If you'd prefer to take advantage of the weather and sit ourside just say'. Two minutes later our table had been set up by the pond. Two courses for £14.50 was fantastic value for money and the service couldn't have been better.

We'll be back soon.

We visited the Tickell again last night with friends, we have all been there on a number of occasions in the past so new what to expect. You certainly don't get let down here. The welcome was great we had a drink before sitting down at our table. our waiter as usual was extremely attentive and friendly. We always have a great laugh with the staff. the menu was also great, they change it regularly so you never get bored. We had smoked salmon with beetroot and the squid starters all very nice. Mains were a mixture. I had the haddock curry risotto so did my wife. Our friends had the sole and the beef wellington, all the meals were cooked perfectly and were very enjoyable. The wine list is also very good a great selection of French wines something for everyone's palate. the atmosphere is always good with all tables taken so a great feeling of people enjoying their evening. There were no downsides at all. However, I was disappointed when I went to the toilet, because usually they are playing the sound clips from the Black Adder series, these were not being piped in last night Oh well you can live with that though.. Great evening all of us enjoyed...we will be back soon..We like to sit in the conservatory area which is bright and you have views of the garden and outside seating, which is also great if the weather is good.

Really enjoyed our visit: from making the reservation (voicemail enquiry returned within the hour, very friendly help from Rob) to choice of table for our group when we arrived, efficient but not intrusive service, very good beer and tremendous food - could not have been better. Thoroughly recommend it!

Great food from a varied menu. The welcome on arrival and cheerful, friendly service was backed up by the most fabulous garden setting. Food ranged from OK for the spicy squid to excellent for the crayfish, the duck and the butler steak. Puddings were great with the chocolate beetroot dish voted "interesting". Would highly recommend for the food, service and ambience.
