After walking the Queen Charlotte Track, my wife and I then decided to spoil ourselves by staying in one place for five nights…we just hoped we would find somewhere that lived up to our hopes.

Martin collected us from Picton and drove the 21 kilometres to Okiwa Bay Lodge. Our suite was below the main level of the house where the other rooms and lounge areas are situated. Our accommodation included a spacious bedroom with an amazing view down the Sound. There is a bathroom, toilet, sink, and also a lounge room with separate garden courtyard and sink area.

It was exceptionally quiet and in every respect the suite was very comfortable…including the bed. Outside the door was a hot tub which we enjoyed. This was used only once by another guest in the five days.

The main living areas on the upper level enjoyed huge views up the Sound and the whole scene was able to be enjoyed from the large lounge area of the extensive decking.

If you like a walk, Anakiwa which is the end of the Queen Charlotte Track...is about 3 kilometres from the lodge and there is a separate trail running between the road and the waterfront. After 1.30pm there is a caravan open to sell coffee, icecreams and a limited food range. but otherwise this is a relatively secluded location. For us this was a positive.

Martin and Susie were our hosts and we enjoyed their company very much as well as a number of most affable people from Europe and USA. We stayed in the lodge for dinner each night and Susie is an excellent cook. On one occasion another guest caught some small fish and Susie turned them into fish pate…this was delicious..! If you have a car…there are restaurants not too far away.

Breakfast was cooked to order and nothing was skimped on. Susie also looked after my "pescatorian" preferences (vegetarian with fish).

On one day Martin took me for a wine tasting and six wineries were visited…a great afternoon. A modest charge was made for this outing and the pick up and delivery to start and finish the holiday…it was very good value.

Before we arrived at Okiwa Bay Lodge, my wife had a recurrence of an illness and Martin and Susie did everything possible to ensure her comfort.

On another occasion we were enjoying a glass of wine on the balcony and in the distance a large pod of dolphins swam up the Sound and put on a great spectacle for us as they rounded up a shoal of fish. What a bonus to enjoy this.

In every respect this was an absolutely fantastic short stay and we were sorry to say farewell when Martin dropped us at the train.

We can only describe the place as "sensational". It is highly recommended.

Room Tip: The lower room and the front room..both with the view…are worth paying the extra for…!

After your physical activities walking the Queen Charlotte track we were delighted to be able to offer relaxation and tranquillity. We were thrilled to see improvements in the patient each day, peace and quiet and rest are a great cure. The appearance of dolphins never ceases to amaze us. As you know our deck and view is our permanent television screen with ever changing channels! We do hope you will come again in the near future and we look forward to taking you to see other delights in this wonderful region. Thank you for your kind review.

Truly, the view from Okiwa Bay is Lodge takes your breath away. And it is constantly changing so you never tire of relaxing on the lovely deck. Susie and Martin could not have been more welcoming. As another reviewer said, we felt like they were our dear friends by the time we left. I would definitely enjoy the dinners they offer. For one, they are absolutely delicious; the company of other guests makes for very interesting conversation, and there are not a lot of restaurants near by. They made us a lunch for our hike on the Queen Charlotte Track and made all the arrangements to have a water taxi pick us up at the end of the day.

There is so much to do around Picton, Havelock, Nelson so the Okiwa Bay Lodge is great to have as a base without having to switch hotels every night. When I return to New Zealand, and I hope I do someday, I will definitely return to the Okiwa Bay Lodge.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Sound.

We have had dolphins and seals coming into the Okiwa Bay to feed recently. They are so entertaining to watch. My wife and I stayed at this most welcoming lodge as part of a two month round the World tour. The accommodation was by far the best of the ten places we stayed at in South Island. Don't wait...book in as long as stay as possible. The views are stupendous, we were lucky and sat with the wonderfully good hosts Susie and Martin and watched a full moon rise over Queen Charlotte's Sound. The lodge is 400 feet above the sound giving huge panoramic views from the large deck. We also tried the cedar wood hot tub, which was a delight while admiring the view. The rooms are modern and well appointed and I strongly advise you book dinner too. Suzie's cooking is excellent. We very much hope we can come back for a longer stay in a year or two.

Okiwa Bay Lodge is a truly special place: the location overlooking Marlborough Sounds is second to none! The rooms are good very comfortable and good size and the hosts Suzie and Martin will look after you even before you arrive.
We stayed for 4 nights before Christmas and had the most wonderful and relaxing time. Susie and Martin are the most gracious hosts who will do everything to make your stay memorable. They serve yummy breakfast including home-made bread every day, packed lunch for your walking tours, aperitif and home-cooked dinners with a good wine to round off the day.
They went out of their way to make us feel welcome and even provided transport as we were without a car.
If you are looking for a cosy, comfortable and relaxing place in a beautiful location… Okiwa Bay is for you!

Room Tip: Just have a chat to Susie about your requirements - all rooms are great! Room 3 has a separate bath...

The pleasure was entirely ours. It was wonderful to hear your mother's English grow in confidence, she was an absolute delight. Sharing our "Piece of Paradise" gives us a great deal of pleasure and we are so glad you enjoyed your stay and we do very much hope you will return again to taste more wines and explore this lovely region.

WOW!!! Absolutely wonderful place to stay and relax. Susie and Martin made us very welcome when we arrived. The views from the lounge and decks took our breath away that are stunning over the Malborough Sounds. It was fun watching the boats and activities coming and going in the channel. We were well catered and pampered to with lovely home cooked meals, morning/afternoon teas - home made cakes and biscuits, hot tub soaks looking out at the stars and well rested night sleeps, comfortable bedroom with your own bathroom and toilet. By the time we left we felt like close friends with Susie and Martin - just open, generous, loving people. Look forward to going there again .....

It was lovely to have you both come and be able to really enjoy our "Piece of Paradise" and the local walks and nature at its very best. The Sting Rays have been busy this week but we have not seen the Orkas again. We do hope you will come again and next time bring your bike or hire one here.

We had a lovely time at the Okiwa Bay Lodge. The house is very clean and well laid out and in a gorgeous setting! The views from the deck and lounge are stunning. Our bed was very comfortable and we had an amazing night sleep. Susie and Martin are great hosts and offer top notch hospitality. We were met with tea and home-made ginger biscuits and Christmas cake followed by crackers and Susie's hummus with wine before dinner. Dinner was a generous three course meal with a choice in mains of a lovely Thai fish dish or roast lamb with roasted potatoes. It was all very good and excellent value. This place is a real gem!

We travel often, choosing small luxury boutique accommodations and have traveled in NZ five times. Okiwa Bay Lodge is an outstanding example of a perfect NZ lodge/B&B, and we're compelled to write our first-ever review! As others note, everything is exceptional - views, hosts, lodge, food. Susie & Martin as owners/hosts are warm and welcoming, offering generous hospitality to create a wonderful environment. The lodge is entirely comfortable and relaxing, yet crisp and efficient at the same time. Their views at the absolute head of Queen Charlotte Sound cannot be beat, any time of day or night, any kind of weather!!
Susie's meals and treats are first-class and always satisfying! Sharing dinner with them (and other opting lodge guests) feels like being at home, a welcome respite after a long day or a long stretch of travel, or both! It is optional at extra cost but well worth it and a true highlight! Martin serves lovely NZ wines before and at dinner (included with).
We have stayed twice now for 3 nights each (Nov 2012 and Nov 2013), and our experiences exceeded our expectations each and every day! Susie & Martin are creative, generous, industrious, genuine.....and problem solvers. There is no issue too large - car tire losing air, needing to stay up-to-date on Superstorm Sandy in 2012, providing transportation (with a bit of advance notice), dietary requests, muddy boots and gear. The rooms are spacious (#1 and #5 in particular), beds and linens are perfect, providing a restful night's sleep! The hot tub is a nice treat with a great view. The lodge common rooms and deck take full advantage of their perch on the hill. The exterior grounds have been well-designed for both function and aesthetics, beautifully utilizing the slope of the property for water management, vegetable and flower gardens, etc. (with some of Martin's quirky sculpture tucked into the landscape!) Internet access and mobile phone coverage are fine. While set in a wonderfully peaceful and quiet landscape, Picton and Blenheim are easily accessible. We strongly recommend at least one day's hike along the Queen Charlotte Track.
All in - one of our favorite stays in the world!! When you leave, you feel you've been well looked after, and we will return as often as possible!

Room Tip: Rooms #1 and #5 are large with amazing views
