After walking the Queen Charlotte Track, my wife and I then decided to spoil ourselves by staying in one place for five nights…we just hoped we would find somewhere that lived up to our hopes.
Martin collected us from Picton and drove the 21 kilometres to Okiwa Bay Lodge. Our suite was below the main level of the house where the other rooms and lounge areas are situated. Our accommodation included a spacious bedroom with an amazing view down the Sound. There is a bathroom, toilet, sink, and also a lounge room with separate garden courtyard and sink area.
It was exceptionally quiet and in every respect the suite was very comfortable…including the bed. Outside the door was a hot tub which we enjoyed. This was used only once by another guest in the five days.
The main living areas on the upper level enjoyed huge views up the Sound and the whole scene was able to be enjoyed from the large lounge area of the extensive decking.
If you like a walk, Anakiwa which is the end of the Queen Charlotte Track...is about 3 kilometres from the lodge and there is a separate trail running between the road and the waterfront. After 1.30pm there is a caravan open to sell coffee, icecreams and a limited food range. but otherwise this is a relatively secluded location. For us this was a positive.
Martin and Susie were our hosts and we enjoyed their company very much as well as a number of most affable people from Europe and USA. We stayed in the lodge for dinner each night and Susie is an excellent cook. On one occasion another guest caught some small fish and Susie turned them into fish pate…this was delicious..! If you have a car…there are restaurants not too far away.
Breakfast was cooked to order and nothing was skimped on. Susie also looked after my "pescatorian" preferences (vegetarian with fish).
On one day Martin took me for a wine tasting and six wineries were visited…a great afternoon. A modest charge was made for this outing and the pick up and delivery to start and finish the holiday…it was very good value.
Before we arrived at Okiwa Bay Lodge, my wife had a recurrence of an illness and Martin and Susie did everything possible to ensure her comfort.
On another occasion we were enjoying a glass of wine on the balcony and in the distance a large pod of dolphins swam up the Sound and put on a great spectacle for us as they rounded up a shoal of fish. What a bonus to enjoy this.
In every respect this was an absolutely fantastic short stay and we were sorry to say farewell when Martin dropped us at the train.
We can only describe the place as "sensational". It is highly recommended.
