Hello you said you'd come back to visit on your first stay and you did - thank you. Glad you had a great time - you certainly seemed to get out and about, despite the weather this time. We look forward to your next visit :)

Spent 3 nights at Anakiwa Backpackers and rate the place as one of my very favorites in New Zealand. Tanya and Shayne are really helpful, service-minded, nice and generous. The accomodation is comfortable, set up for the guests to socialize easily and probably more appreciated by "mature" guests than young backpackers. It's tastefully decorated and the kitchen has everything you need and a bit more. There are herbs for cooking and free coffee and tea. You can do day-hikes onto the trail, swim and watch life on the pier, borrow a bike for a ride in the bay, paddle or just relax, do "nothing".

We had such a fab time here. The facilities were great and the rooms were lovely and had a real homely feel. It only has three rooms in total so is very quiet. The information pack was great and we were able to use the kayaks for two hours for free!! The hosts (Shayne and Tanya) were very friendly and helped us feel at home in the space. All the best, Holly and Zoë.

We had a great two night stay in mid March. The place is lovely, as are the hosts. The location is brilliant - could easily stay a week or more if you have time. The hostel is ideally placed at the end of the Queen Charlotte Track and within fairly easy reach of Havelock, Picton and the Kenepuru Sound area. Thanks Shane and Tanya.

We were on our way back to Picton after walking in the Abel Tasman my husband and 30 year old son we had booked the sea view apartment.I was very pleasantly surprised it was more beachfront hotel than backpackers ! The facilities were excellent and the location beautiful . Our hosts Tanya and Shane were excellent . We used the Kayaks one morning and had a trip on the sound. As another reviewer said make sure you pick up supplies on way as no shops or restaurants and Picton is a very windy trip

Room Tip: It depends if you want shared facilities

We stayed here for 3 nights in the Old Veranda and feel we enjoyed a comfortable and complete Queen Charlotte Sound experience with the accommodations Shayne and Tanya have created.

As said in other reviews, one feels as if visiting in a friend's home. Our room was ensuite, which we would recommend, and one we actually preferred to the self-contained apartment because we met so many fascinating people from around the world while cooking, dining, and relaxing in the community spaces.

The location of Anakiwa Backpackers is perfect. It is right next to the Queen Charlotte Track (and the glow-worms on it at night) where we walked daily. There also is a jetty right across the street with wonderful swimming off the end. We enjoyed an amazing kayak trip one evening along the shoreline. Not to mention the stars from the upper terrace picnic table!

As warned by the owners, bring your food and supplies from stores in Nelson or wherever. But the upside is the kitchen is large and stocked with all the necessities for cooking, plus free tea and coffee. Also there is a grill and large outdoor picnic table for group dinners and evening converstaions.

"I stayed here for one night for an event I was doing in Anakiwa. Couldn't have been happier with my stay. The backpackers is effectively a house and because of this, and the clear commitment to attention to detail, the place feels more like you are staying in a friend's home. A lovely property right on the edge of the Queen Charlotte track and Anakiwa beach. Shayne and Tanya were both chatty and accommodating. Never had to wait to use the bathroom or kitchen amenities. Would happily stay here again if I am down that way."
