“Well-kept Colonial style hotel on the main road”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

We spent 4 nights in Cameron highlands and I think this is the most upscale hotel you might find. The main spaces are lovely, generous, and comfortable with old-world charm. The rooms are well-kept in traditional colonial styling with a canopied bed, ceiling fan and your own balcony. The bathrooms are a bit dated, but you do forgive her because she really is a old dame. The king-sized bed is not as comfortable as I would have wished, but its really the noisy main road that requires some tolerance especially early in the morning. For deep sleepers its not much trouble at all. Having said all that, this hotel is in a class of its own when it comes to this area. She is a classy one, and has appointed highly respectable and attentive staff to accompany.

I stayed here for 2 nights in March 2013. my first visit to Cameron Highlands was all about experiencing the history and environment of this place. obviously, being a history buff, I chose this hotel, the oldest (and very first) hotel built here. my experience was great, but tinged with sadness.

firstly, this old grandlady of the highlands has been given the uplift she deserves. the charm and character of the old days has truly been restored. if this is what you look for in stays in high-end hotels in historic places around the world, then this is definitely the hotel for you.

its library, with its gentle fireplace dancing in the evenings is just made for sinking into those leather armchairs and reading a book. the dining room takes one back to the old days. the rooms are charming, spacious and the hotel grounds, albeit small, are lush with green and quiet. of course, all this happened to me during the week... weekends can be a bustle!

the bathrooms were too small, in my opinion. back in the good old days, bathrooms were huge... this has not been recreated, probably catering for the modern traveller... well, not me!

unfortunately, there is one big down-side to this hotel. when first constructed, it was beside the main road, which had bullock-carts and the rumble of old cars and land rovers. today, it is a highway! nothing stands in between your sleep and the noise of the main road. the cool air only adds to this, coz sound travels further (and clearer) as the temp drops. the sleep is a serious problem. and the scream of motorcycles in the middle of the night is just not on.

I suppose its a trade-off. to enjoy the experience of the colonial days, one has to do without peaceful sleep. the choice is yours.

Room Tip: a good room is when the crowds are absent, so avoid weekends

Beautiful hotel with a lovely outlook - what a shame the area that has been so spoilt. Grew up in Malaysia 30 years ago when Camerons was gorgeous - can't believe what has happened with ugly strawberry farms and shops, horrendous buildings and litter. Such a pity. However, this hotel shelters you from all this - food was delicious, beautfiul shiny wood floors and that lovely Malay feel. Think the reviews about noise were a bit over the top - we had tea on our balcony every morning. Also recommend the cafe upstairs at the golf club accross the road. Very good view and excellent food. Had a tea and rose bath in the hotel spa was a real highlight - also went for drinks and dinner at the Smoke House - the garden is heavenly - it could be Sussex, England!

Our allocated room (10?) was on the ground floor with views to the golf course and as such the quality of of the furnishings were outstanding. However when it came to the beds - it was a different matter; the twin beds were of poor quality - soft with no back support. To make matters worse my bed had a 10% difference between the two sides - I have to presume guests had sat on the edge damaging the side of the mattress. In fact we stayed at another YTL hotel later in our holiday and the beds were so very different

Unlike other guest reports we did not find the proximity of the road a problem - after 8.00pm there was little traffic noise - whether it was because of Chinese New Year - I don't know. We enjoyed sitting out on our balcony in the sun - but we didn't think that the locking device for the French window was good enough for a ground floor room. Good fitness centre.

The restaurants were a dissappointment - we came to Malaysia to eat local food for our main meals - not Western a la carte or Japanese table d'hote. Our driver had recommended a steam boat to us and to achieve this we crossed the road to enjoy the same. Breakfast was mainly western & I must admit I do prefer scrambled eggs etc first thing - but unfortunately - the eggs were cooked in some form of tin to give them a "shape" and as such were greasy.

It is a short walk left out of the hotel to the small town of Brinchang - not much to look at but it does have a couple of interesting temples & a good bread shop as you enter (closed Tuesday).

Would I recommend the hotel - I would have to look in more detail & take into account their position in the Highlands.

We stayed at the Cameron Highlands resort for two nights as part of a tour of Malaysia. We drove from Kuala Lumpur, which took approx. 4 hours, the majority on very winding and steep roads and is definitely not for the faint hearted. First impressions of the hotel were excellent , a lovely hillside location overlooking a Golf Course and the welcome and service that we received was first class. The room we were allocated overlooked the busy main road, which we hope would quieten down later in the evening, however this was not the case and traffic noise was regular until about 1-2 am and then started again around 6am. The hotel has retained all of its colonial charm and as such is not double glazed, which merely highlighted the problem. The hotel facilities were excellent and the staff very helpful and attentive, but having very little sleep for 2 nights in what is a 5 star rated hotel is no fun. We took breakfast in the hotel and the quality of food and service was excellent. I felt that the cost of and alcoholic beverages was very expensive and as such we ate evening meals and lunch outside of the hotel, although we did partake in what was some of the best mixed Gin and Tonics I have every tasted , albeit they were £9 each.

Whereas the hotel location was very good the surrounding area and local towns were what I can only describe as shabby and uninviting. The destruction of the rain forest by local strawberry farmers and the inevitable construction work that is ongoing, has certainly spoiled which what I am sure was a beautiful place

Room Tip: I am sre that all rooms face the road, so take earplugs!!

This is a lovely, lovely hotel with very high standards. Nearly everything about it is just right. Lovely large rooms, excellently appointed and furnished. Beautifully clean. All public areas welcoming, bright and stylish. Staff excellent.

Just two problems: - the hotel is just off the main road and is noisy. The food and drinks here are expensive. Beer from mini-bar Rm 22 for example - anywhere else Rm8 to Rm10 !! Restaurants look smart but are overpriced and there is no economy option.** If you're on a tour with no transport you're stuck and I thought that a bit cynical.

** The option is to walk across the road to the Golf Club and eat there - not great but value for money.

I had never stayed in a hotel where I was treated like a queen! I have now. First of all let's get the traffic problem out of the way. Yes the hotel overlooks the one road leading through the Highlands and it can be noisy but generally quietens down after 8pm till about 7am. I sleep with ear plugs when I am away so it didn't bother me and I was up early anyway.
I have to say I have never checked in at a hotel where once you have been escorted from your car to reception, you are asked to sit down and the staff come to you for the check in. After being given damp towels to freshen up and a cup of sweet (how the Malaysians drink tea) black tea, I was given a form to fill in with my details and then asked for my passport and credit card which were taken to the reception desk for the formalities to be completed. We were then escorted by two of the staff to our room. We were very lucky - we were upgraded to a suite. The balconies of course overlook the road but the view beyond is of the golf course and the distant hills. Just superb. The hotel supplies very good toiletries and tea/coffee facilities as well as slippers and bathrobes for the whole party. Also a basket of fruit was left on the table in the lounge area. Free wifi code was given to use in the room and there are two computers free of charge just above reception. Breakfast is fantastic - wonderful cooked breakfast but not the normal stuff. Also had high tea - had to be done - which was about £12 for 2 people. Sandwiches, scones, cakes and strawberries and chocolate dip and choice of tea. The staff know you and call you by name. I just cannot speak highly enough of this hotel. It was such a pleasure to stay there and to do the Jim Thompson walk with Madi. Although I am unlikely to visit Malaysia again, I would certainly consider staying here if it was easier to get there. Well done CHR and thank you for a superb restful two nights.

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the road so apart from booking a suite, I would just say take earplugs if you hav...
