Description: The current listings on trip advisor are very limited and this relatively new establishment provides good food at reasonable prices, and provides a different choice (japanese) for people (esp after travelling for an extensive time in Malaysia)

Based on the very positive reviews in Tripadvisor my wife and me decided to have dinner in this restaurant. It was open this Thursday evening (thus not regularly closed on Thursdays as might possibly be concluded from another review). It completely fulfilled our expectations. As starter we had the already recommended croquettes which were very tasty indeed, and had the salmon sushi. The owner teached us how to eat this: dip the salmon in the sauce, do not bite a part of the sushi, but put the whole in your mouth, and chew very, very slowly. Probably for people who are knowledgeble with the Japanese kitchen this is common knowledge, but for us this was a learning experience. Good selection of main courses, we selected the tempura, which was delicious. Service was excelent: the tonic water that my wife liked to drink was not on the list, but was especially collected for her from elsewhere. The restaurant is very clean, and the prices are very reasonable (or very low, compared to European standards). Highly recommended!

Slightly on the more pricey side if compared to the stalls/restaurants nearby (but hey, its japanese food in cameron highlands). Great food that gives off a great home cooked vibe. The chef himself personally tried out each and every dish before he continues cooking/serves us (as observed). Though pricey, its still cheaper than eating at some lousy fast food japanese joints down in kl.

KouGen was surprisingly good! The lamb stew cooked with lots of napa cabbage, diced carrots & white radish and beancurd sheet in fermented soybean (foo yee) served with a bowl of rice was delicious. Next came the salmon with lemon butter sauce served with mixed stir fried veges, salad , bowl of rice that also came with a hot piping miso soup just exactly what you need on a cool weather in Cameron Highlands. The scones were fluffy and thick served with strawberry jam & whipped cream was good. Will definitely be back next time. Highly recommended!

This is the only jap place that offers value for money.

Tho their menu selection is limited, the chef iis quick to point out his willingness to prep the food to your fancy n charge only at the food price, services @ your discretion. Good right? ^*^ to me at least this place is an awesome discovery

Menu wise, modern jap food equiv to sushi zanmai or pasta zanmai, not your normal traditional setup. Expect ikea like ambience and a great attitude chef and you will enjoy ur time here.

Kougen does not hold a liqor license, so
Liqor is off the menu BUT @ the chef recommendation, walked next to the sundry shop and bought a 1 litre sake for rm 83, chef heated it uP in his teapot n here i am writing this field report ( FR)

Kampai to u all!
