Just back from a night at the Smokehouse in the Cameron Highlands. Started off well - the reception area offered plenty of comfortable seating areas and interesting objects to peruse, also offered complimentary coffee, which was excellent. The Garden Suite was large but a little dark. Just beyond the garden view was the main road, so don't think tranquility and mountain air if you are at the front of the hotel. Trucks, busses and cars a plenty, but thankfully not after 10pm. The bar was fun, drinks very reasonably priced and the roaring fire quite a novelty in Malaysia. The same three songs played all night in a loop - think Jimmy Shand and you're on the right track. Dinner was very British, think steak pie, fish and chips and beef wellington. Beautifully served, well-cooked and large portions, but maybe a tad on the pricey side. Back to the room - light from holes in the ceiling above the bed...mmm... bed missing bars from the head rest, the remainder of which were loose. The morning wake up - not birds, but trucks followed by no water from any tap - never mind hot. Breakfast was fantastic though. On checking out reported the water problem, felt we were kind of listened to. Charged for the complimentary coffee - interesting. On the whole the place is in need of some love and care, the hotel and everything in it looks like stuff my granny had in her house in the 70s. Come to think of it, she would have appreciated the music, food and service too. Good place for a meal and some nostalgia, but doesn't make it as a place worth staying.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms away from the front.

We visited Cameron Highlands almost every year but it was the first time we stayed at the Smokehouse. We had high expectation prior arrived at this hotel. It has a lovely and beautiful garden with many plants, trees and swings surrounded the hotel, suitable for photo shooting. We stayed at old wing thus the room was a bit old looking but it has great & clean bathroom. The breakfast served was wonderful especially the marmalade but the coffee and tea is so-so only.

Room Tip: next to the restaurant is a bit noisy if you want to take an afternoon nap

Well, what to say about Ye Olde Smokehouse? I guess this depends on your expectations. I expected a somewhat surreal experience in the middle of Malaysia. And this is what you get. Put this hotel in the middle of Great Britain and you will be pleased to stay here if you are touring around in just above par hotels. Everything fits: quaint decor, matching interiour and rooms designed accordingly. Really weird though if you are just getting used to the Malaysian culture and temperatures. And just for this i would stay here when visiting Cameron Highlands, as these are as weird as the Smokehouse. Its mutch colder out here, Malaysians visit the kitch stawberry orchards and tea is as big as it gets out here.
Our room was ok. A bit damp, but isn't that British as well. Breakfast also matches all the cliches (and is therefor good).
Pricing on their website is too high for value for money, but book through an internet booking site and set your expectation and you will have fun at Ye Olde Smokehouse, more so I think than in the somewhat plastic copies in the surroundings (despite their possible better services)

I stopped here for tea on my way out of the Cameron Highlands and found the place quite charming: it really does look as if it came out of Sussex or the Cotswolds (even if the staff appear to be from India).

Unfortunately as something of a local institution it does rest on its laurels a bit and the service was a little hit and miss. Tea, nevertheless, was very tasty, although there's something odd about the scone recipe they use that makes them crumble in your hands as you apply the jam.

Reminiscent of the Hill Club in the highlands of Sri Lanka however more of an English inn rather than a country club. Located down in the vally within a well maintained garden. Stayed one night only and arrived late without a booking so very happy to accept the room upgrade offered. Given a suite (ante room, bedroom, and bathroom) situated on the groung floor with a couple of steps between each level (awkward for wheel chairs but ok for someone with some limited mobility). The room was clean and comfortable with a large bathroom (including bath). Staff friendly and enjoyable english breakfast included.
