“For 2 nights, it is okay”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

The Cameronian Inn is obviously one of the better places to stay in Tanah Rata, as long as you are not too long there.

We called the owner the night before whether they have a room available. They said no, but they offered us the broom closet for 20 RM per day. As we were staying only two nights and having seen many hostels in Vietnam, this sounded okay for us.

Upon our arrival we could easly check in and really got a twin bed (year of construction around 1920 :-) ) in the broom closet. As the wifi works well, we spent the later evening outside, so we had not to sleep to long there.

Breakfast is overpriced so we went out and found better options in Tanah Rata.

There is a very good and reasonable priced laundry next to the Cameronian Inn.

Booked for seven nights and paid in full after checking-in. No problems with the room which cost us RM50 per night (shared bathroom). They provide hot water in front of the Reception desk for RM0.50 and also tea/coffee-making facilities (self-service tea for RM1.20/coffee for RM1.60). They also make their homemade scones which I never tried.

Cameronian Inn is within walking distance from where the bus stops (not at the Freesia Bus terminal). There are minivans waiting to transport you to your accommodation, but you won't need them (unless you have a lot of luggage to carry) to Cameronian Inn.

The TV room is separate from the main building. There are the News, Science/Documentaries, Movies, Sports, variety/cooking channels on Astro as well as a VCD player. They do have a small collection of VCDs available for free. No smoking is allowed in the TV room (not even on the steps leading to the room), but 22 steps away is an area with two cement tables and benches for smokers. Outside dining area is also for smokers.

Guests are mostly backpackers who stay for a night or two, with the occasional family coming for the weekend. Cameronian Inn may be full during weekends.

The owners have a poodle (April) which may bark on rare occasions. Never been a problem at night for us. They also have two caged rabbits in the garden. Speaking of the garden, they have plenty of flowers and greenery and the air is fresh and clean.

Toilets are washed daily and toilet rolls are supplied in the shared bathrooms. They charge RM0.70 per roll if you wish to purchase them. Towels are rented at RM1.00. No soap provided but you may purchase small bars at the reception desk.

Newspapers (a copy each of The Star and The New Straits Times) are provided daily for reading in the dining area. There is also a book exchange as well as books only for reference (travel guides).

They do not provide tours but they can arrange it with the other tour providers (The Mossy Forest is actually closed for renovation, but you may access it by being on a tour or sneaking in). You may also purchase bus tickets from the manager (pick-up at the inn) as well.

Laundry: They provide an airing area at the back of the main building. No direct sunlight. Washing machines are for their own use only. They do however give details regarding two laundering services in town.

Wi-fi is provided free (password is pasted on the glass screen at the reception desk).

Hiking: Info regarding the many jungle trails is pasted on the dining area wall, updated regularly.

Staff friendly and helpful.

After booking and confirming our reservations for 2 rooms over the phone everything seemed fine. When we arrived, the lady owner greeted us with a torrent of how we had to pay much more than the agreed standard listed price and even stay in the dorm rooms which we didn't book. She insisted that it was a crazy busy day and the rooms were going like crazy. As it turned out, we were the last guests that checked in that day. When showing her our confirmed reservation and reminding her of the fact that it wasn't a very busy day after all she immediately became hostile once again. Rooms were very noise as there are glass louvres that open into the hallway and bathroom area. Stay away. Sleep in the street if you have to.

Room Tip: Once you enter the reception area, turn around and find a better place.

I had arrived Cameron at 7am after taking a late night bus and had pre-booked a room. I was told i could get one at 9am. So after waiting 2 hours i asked if my room is ready. I was told that the room is being painted (to cover the mildew) and will be available only at noon !! Upon seeing my annoyance with the fact that they couldnt inform this earlier, they offered to give us another room which was slightly cheaper. I think they just wanted to try their luck and pass me the expensive room first. Extremely annoying. After i checked in, the hot shower was not working. The boiler died or something. The rooms are fine. The service is bad !

My friend Vic and I arrived in the Cameron Highlands in the heat of the tourism season in Malaysia without any pre-scheduled accommodations. A rep was there at the bus stop who said there was space nearby at the Cameronian Inn.
Our room was 55RM for the night and was essentially just a place for us to lay our heads for the night since this little excursion had been pretty last minute. The beds were very comfy but it was a little noisy from our room in the morning, but we weren't really sleeping in anyways.
The staff were friendly, they got us on an afternoon packaged tour of the tea fields, strawberry farm, bee farm, a Chinese Temple and a butterfly farm. The tea fields and strawberry farm were certainly the highlights, but the other stops were not really that interesting. It didn't help that the weather wasn't that great there that day.
The bus ride to the Cameron Highlands was about 4.5 hours and the last 2 are really really curvy, so beware if you are prone to motion sickness!

It's also really close to town where you can get some excellent Indian food!

Stayed at Cameronian Inn for 2 nights in Feb. We were given 2 rooms that were pretty comfortable, cozy and most importantly clean. Owners were quite helpful in recommending a guide for the adventure tours who actually had in depth knowledge of the various species of flora and fauna found in mossy forest as well as on the trek to see Raffalasia flower. Owners also recommended good places to eat in Tanah Rata and Brinchang. Inn is also located close to the center of Tanah Rata

A very good experience overall and will definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a something in between budget and midsize accommodation.

The rooms are basic, don't expect too much. It got extremely noisy at times, because most of the rooms have a window that leads into the hallway. So you can hear everything that's said and a baby screaming for hours or the Chinese guy spitting in the shower (coughing it up from deep down) wasn't very enjoyable. Our room (or was it the bed?) stank really bad like pee, and the smell wouldn't go away. Not sure what that was but it didn't go away during the time of our stay. The bathrooms were clean for the most part, but usually ran out of toilet paper at some point. I found it poor that they couldn't even provide soap, which means you have to bring your own soap every time you use the bathroom.

Because of the smell in our room I decided to check out a few other places in the price range of the Cameronian Inn, and after seeing some other places in Tanah Rata, I have to say that it is actually one of the better guesthouses.

The food was okay, the scones were actually very good and the self-service tea & coffee was great.

The guesthouse seems to get booked pretty quickly, so make sure to book ahead.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 16 and it stank like pee.
