“Good sushi, SLOOOOOW service.”
Reviewed March 1, 2012

We went last night (2/29/2012) and the sushi was good, but they are understaffed. There was one person making sushi and our group of 6 ordered 7 rolls plus an appetizer. Our dining experience lasted 2 hours. You could tell the main waitress was running around as fast as she could, but it was impossible for her to keep up. Once we actually GOT the sushi (which came out in batches, 2-3 rolls at a time instead of all at once) it was very good. I probably wouldn't go with such a large group again, but it would be great for date night.

“Excellent sushi and more...”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

Matsuri Sushi is a small restaurant tucked away in Lakewood Ranch's upscale Spanish-style San Marco shopping plaza. There is an 8-seat sushi bar, 4 or 5 booths, and 16 or so tables. The interior is pleasantly illuminated (no bright lights) and there are 2 flat screen TV's which were (thankfully) silent except for the captioned scroll. Beer and wine are available. We intended to use our 2011 Entertainment Book coupon for $ 20.00, but a sign in the window announced that dining coupons were no longer accepted. Not that that mattered. We were hungry and eager to sample the fare.

One pleasant server quickly delivered our menus and took our drink order. The menu offers Japanese food as well as Korean specialties. There is also a sushi list on the table from which you may order a la carte sushi and sashimi. We debated sharing a Sushi Deluxe Dinner (10 pieces of sushi, a tuna roll, soup and salad) for $ 29.95, but chose instead to order 3 Chef's Special Rolls a la carte. The sushi list describes 31 different and creatively named Special Rolls, along with Sushi-Nigiri, Makimono-Rolls, and sides such as seaweed salad, spring rolls, and crab rangoons. The menu notes that other Special Rolls may be requested.

We ordered 3 Special Rolls from the menu. The Geisha Roll ($ 12.95) was 6 large and delicious pieces of spicy tuna and asparagus, topped with tri-color tobiko and black caviar. The tobiko and caviar literally "popped" in the mouth creating a tiny salty explosion. It was superb. The Fantasy Roll ($ 13.95) was 8 huge and colorful pieces of salmon, tuna, avocado and tobiko with spicy mayo on top of a mexican roll. It was another winning combination of flavor and crunch. Lastly, the Godzila Roll ($ 14.95) was the highlight of our dinner. Soft shell crab, shrimp tempura, asparagus and scallions with a topping of eel sauce. Scrumptious! Before our rolls arrived our server delivered a cup of miso soup, a salad, and a huge bowl of steamed edamame to the table. As we were ordering a la carte we did not expect that so it was a nice surprise.

I would highly recommend Matsuri Sushi based on our dining experience, and even go so far as to say it was the best sushi we have ever eaten. This restaurant is most definitely a keeper and we will be back for more, and more, and more!

“Best Sushi in Lakewood Ranch”
Reviewed July 18, 2010

This is my favorite restaurant in LWR. Terrific, fresh sushi! I'd eat here every day if I could. My favorite rolls are: Fantasy, Geisha, Fire Dragon, and Sake. The chicken soup is also terrific (but spicy). Great kids menu with several different types of fried rice and tempura chicken. My daughter also loves the Tampa roll (fried grouper).

“Excellent sushi in a unique setting”

You won't find all-you-can-eat sushi here, but if you are looking for quality in a lovely setting, this is the place. The selections available are creative and numerous.
