This hotel has fantastic surroundings and the room was sumptuous and quiet (even though we seemed to get bumped out of our "sea view" room), large with a great bathroom. Everything was clean and well kept. The problem was the service. The check in took to long on account of the fact that we went on a three day weekend and reception was struggling to keep up with the arrivals. Still, the staff were polite and after a protracted wait we were whisked off to our lodgings in a golf cart. This place isn't for you if you don't like large resorts. We were half board, and breakfast and dinner were a bit daunting, with long queues and a lot of milling around to see what was on offer (or not). The staff was friendly but distracted, as of they themselves were finding it hard to cope with the hundreds of people. I spoke to them in Greek, but many of them speak English, which was fine. The problem is that they seemed slow - especially in the coffee bars as well as at the Kyvotos Restaurant by the sea - and disorganised. Wi-fi available in common areas but nothing doing in the room. Insufficient toiletries in the bathroom. No dustbin in the room except for the bathroom.

This review refers to May 2014. Unfortunately we are still staying in this hotel...

Let me start with Pros:

1. The resort itself is quite nice. It is very green and well-kept with a lot of opportunities for walking. The beach is very good as well with a clean sand and a lot of available space for sunbathing.
2. The food in the main restaurant is good. Definitely not up to 5* standard but good 4* quality.
3. Kudos to cleaning staff who does a great job.

Cons:

1. Since we are travelling with a 4-year old, good night sleep is very important for us. Unfortunately we didn't get it in this hotel. WARNING to all families who are planning to travel here for the vacation. This hotel caters to large youth / corporate groups. If you get "luck" like we did, forget about normal quiet hours. Let me fully describe what we encountered here. First of all, when booking the room with the hotel (and we did it directly @ barcelo.com), nobody mentioned that a huge corporate event was planned. Nobody mentioned this when we checked in as well. However, 4 days after our arrival to this resort a huge Italian group arrived. My impression was that this was a corporate event. Right from the beginning we noticed decline in service since all of the attention was given to this group. Also there was an unpleasant surprise at the information board notifying us of the new events schedule. This schedule was quite interesting - Evening show from 22:15 to 23, disco at pool bar till 02:00. Well, starting from this very first day there was no escape from the noise and loud music. How would you like to return back to your room after lunch with your kid ready to have a nap and start listening to a very loud rehearsal at the open air theater instead? How would you like not to be able to go to bed until 02:00 due to a very loud show and disco afterwards? To me it is totally unacceptable. I have been to many resorts in Europe and Americas but never encountered such an attitude to the hotel guests. Moreover, you would never expect this from a 5* hotel. I totally understand that May is just the beginning of the vacation season in Greece and the hotels are half empty. I understand that getting a corporate group in these conditions is a luck for the hotel. But was it possible to organize it in such a way that the other guests who paid their money were not disturbed during their vacation? If not, the management should have closed the hotel for the duration of the event for all tourists or at least warn them of the late night events.
2. Couple words to mention about the front office staff. Everybody is friendly and nice but this is it. Nobody is able to help you with your problem. When we first complained about the noise, the only solution that was offered to us was to move to another bungalow. It was a very wise decision from our side to check the location of the "new" bungalow first before moving out. The new bungalow was right by the pool bar! Also nobody seems to know what the current schedule of the animation events is. We contacted 3 different people asking for the information about the current night's events and got 3 different answers. Total incompetence!

Conclusion. Will we come here again? No way... Although my first impression of the hotel was very good. Will I advise anybody to come here? If you like to party all night long , probably yes. If you have a family and come for a family vacation, stay away.

My message to the management. Don't be greedy and start respecting your clients. Otherwise your Tripadvisor rating won't get any better in the nearest future.

Room Tip: It looks like the only way to escape the noise is to stay in suites or the buildings located at the...

i have visited Barcelo Hydra Beach during Easter holiday. The hotel setting is perfect, the staff was generally professional and the rooms good value for money. However the service was inadequate ( the staff could not manage the volume of people) there was no planning with restaurant service, we could wait one hour for forks with the food in the table and sorry to say the level of food was very poor- in some cases looking like a cantine food.

We booked an Easter all-inclusive deal and must say we are quite dissaspointed. Managers and staff are definitely not aware of a functioning all-inclusive hotel. On Saturday night the restaurant was not at all ready to receive all the guests for the late evening dinner. There was a huge line to enter the restaurant (so guests of a 5-star hotel have to wait in line for food like they are in some kind of charity or something) and then a huge line again (waiting 35 min) to reach the buffet. Have been to plenty of hotels for Easter holidays and have never ever encountered such situation where guests run around trying to find an empty table to sit. All of the hotels prepare a table- plan with all the guests and named tables etc (which by the way tables had no glasses nor silverware etc). The staff was not polite at all saying " you are lucky to have found a table". So... hotel guests who have paid a pretty significant amount for 3 days- stay should be lucky to have found a table? And to eat dinner they have already paid for? This pretty much ruined our Saturday evening. Next stop: we reached our hotel door later that night which was full full full of giant mosquitos (which according to the reception did not bite) however finding about 50 giant insects outside your door is totally hygenic...? We called the reception who advised that they could only fumigate next day..? Cause I guess hotels do not operate 24/7. So if a fire lets say starts, the hotel will only be able to assist next day..? Anyway we entered 1 by 1 however some insects got inside the room. Next day they fumigated however they didnt care to clean the dead insects on the floor afterwards. Last day we decided to visit the famous spa which was placed as an attraction from our booking agency. Has someone ever seen a spa- indoor pool with cold water as if you were outside? And a jacuzzi also with cold water? There were supposed to be two people of the staff not so friendly once again saying that spa 's don't use hot water in the jacuzzi's and the indoor pool works only mainly in summer like guests will go to the indoor pool in July-August and not to the outdoor pool or the beach??!! Other minor things are having to beg to get an extra toilet paper, slow pool service and unclean outdoor pool (some guest were swimming) all of which makes us categorize this hotel as a 3-star hotel. There are plenty of other nice hotels for those who wish to have some nice Easter, summer or other type of holidays and especially with better access/road.

Room Tip: ask for a room close to the main bulding or close to the pool/sea.

Great family hotel.

Rooms: spacy rooms (2 adults with 2 kids) and very nice renovated bathrooms. The rooms need some face lift also, however, nice rooms.
Restaurants: excellent food! Congrats to the chef. The buffet was one of the best for AI buffet restaurants. Only problem, when the hotel is full they need to replace the empty plates faster. The area where the desserts are located is totally wrong. There were very long lines and at the same area was the bread etc. Need to be placed elsewhere. The beach restaurants are also nice.
Staff: one of the friendliest and always with a smile. Management has also something to to with that, so, great job. To the people working there - keep it up, great attitude and personalities!
Beach: very nice, warm water at a sandy beach, nice sunbeds.
Night shows: need improvement.
Disco: nice hang out at a nice spot. The staff tries hard there. Need to relax and mingle though.
Area: nothing really to do around there. The road to the hotel is very curvy - more than an hour of curvy road which is not for the ones with stomach issues :-) Not a fault of the hotel though...
Pool: needs a water slide. It is a family resort, needs more fun things.
Beach bars: need more food options. However, good service
