Owner description: On the 13th November 1988, when the speleologists Pierre Guichebaron and Marc Papet went into a newly discovered gallery in the Balme a Collomb, at 1700m altitude in the Granier mountain range for the first time, they found one of the largest deposits of the bones of the Ursus spelaeus, or « Cave Bear »: thousands of bones were lying on the ground over an area of more than three thousand square metres and three hundred metres long! Blocked off by an unstable rock-fall, which took several hours’ work to clear, the entrance had been closed for thousands of years. Archaeologists and palaeontologists were immediately told about this discovery, and the scientific adventure started. A team of diggers and specialists of various types, lead by Michel Philippe, the curator of the Lyons Natural History Museum, worked on the site for one month per year for six consecutive summers to progress with their studies. Access to the cave is arduous, with an altitude difference of six hundred metres to be climbed every day, and working conditions are difficult, given that the temperature in the cave stays at 1.7°C with a relative humidity of 90. A cave for wintering During thousands of years, generations of cave bears spent the long winter months in the cave. Some years, one of them died, and its bones have been conserved up to the present day.
