“Magical Kahanda Kanda”
Reviewed February 8, 2009

We stayed in the Peacock Suite, for five days in August last year. We'd only been to KK before to have lunch and look around but we loved it so much we were determined to come back and stay.

It's actually quite difficult to describe how wonderful this place is,perched on the hill above Koggala Lake, the manicured grounds carved out of the jungle and surrounded by an immaculate tea plantation.

The hotel itself is a real labour of love by it's owner George Cooper. The design is beautiful, giving a new slant to traditional Sinhalese architecture, decorated with real style and thoughtfullness and attention to detail.

The food is incredible, George sent both his chefs off to Thailand to learn the secrets of Thai cooking, but everything that they make is delicious, with the freshest of ingredients. As some people have already mentioned you can pretty much ask for what you want. I also asked if I could have some cookery lessons with the chef who was delighted to oblige.

Again it's the thoughtful attention to detail, which you notice, the wonderful breakfast is served in the pergola by the pool, lunch can be served in the wonderful open dining pavillion and dinner wherever you want it.We were the only people there for our stay and the staff amused themselves by dreaming up new venues for us,by the pool surrounded by candles and on our last night, they built us a grotto, made of woven branches and decorated with fairy lights and candles, but that's just typical of what to expect from KK staff.
You can do as much or as little as you want, sitting by pool reading, taking a tuktuk down to Galle or down to the nearby beach-do try Why beach bar-the Italian food is great and the owners are charming, taking a bike ride through local villages or taking a boat trip on Koggala lake to see what it all looks like from water level are all pretty great but just hanging out watching the monkeys swing through the trees twice a day, mongooses passing by and then watching an amazing sunset and waiting for the fireflies to come out are all pretty magical too! There is also a gym room and if you can't live without any media, a TV and a library of DVDs as well.

There is a real family atmosphere at KK,George is the most genial and charming of hosts and Henry, Pubudu and the chefs will go out of their way to do what they can to make you feel welcome.

I know that I'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said but it really is a truly magical place-I can't recommend it highly enough.

Hyperbole doesn't do Kahanda Kanda (KK) justice. It really is a utopian paradise! (no exaggeration).
We spent the first 5 days of our honeymoon at KK and from the time we were collected at Colombo to the time the same driver dropped us back to Colombo we had no cause to complain.
There is no point repeating what previous reviewers have said, we can only agree with all the good points and counter the only bad one.

1) The water being weak - you are in the remote hills of Sri Lanka - deal with it. We had absolutely no problem with the water as the low pressure was explained to us by George from the start. There was always hot water but if you expect a power shower then you will be disappointed.

Reading the previous review of the Singhalese lessons made us smile, we were there to see the final exam between George and luxurytraveller_8 - I think both would have struggled against a native 3 year old. If you want Sri Lanka lessons speak to Henry or Pubudu but give George a wide berth. If you need cocktail lessons speak to Henry too, his Arack Sour and Cosmopolitans were to die for and he was so helpful without being overly attentive. Pubudu was of great assistance too, booking tuk tuks, making reservations in the best local restaurants and organising our safari trip to Yala Park.

Finally George was the perfect host, we felt more like friends than guests and when he says make yourself at home, you really can - just put your feet up and completely destress. We hope to go back and that is the best compliment we can pay it.

Thanks to George and all his staff, go visit for yourself and experience "Shangri La".

After a very tough 2008 we were both looking foward to our two week holiday over Christmas and New Year. We spent the first week in India and had such an enjoyable time that we did not think it could get much better. How wrong we were! It's not often a place exceeds expectations, but KK was far beyond what we had hoped for.
Kahanda Kanda was the perfect escape. The staff, food and setting were faultless. So much so we had to be coaxed into ever leaving during our stay. We arrived at KK in the afternoon, after we were shown our room (Mango suite, complete with peacock and monkeys in the trees outside) we sat down to a beautiful lunch and could not have been happier.
Everything was perfect and all the positive comments in other reviews are true. KK truly is a magical place and we both highly recommend it. George was charming and the perfect host and his team headed up by Pubudu and Henry could not have been more helpful - thank you all. We will be back!

If you had 14 days to spend in Sri Lanka would you spend it in one place and how can any place meet all your requirements for such a long stay.

If you fancy a holiday in Sri Lanka and you just want to unpack your bags once and not move again, look no further than Kahanda Kandai or KK as it is known locally. Run by English Socialite George Cooper and his team led by Pubudu, Henri and the boys. This place is just the perfect secret hideaway. Close to all the gorgeous amenities of Galle Fort and the beautiful beaches surrounding Galle, KK has a series of beautiful tasetfullly designed individual Villas and Bungalows overlooking magnificent tea plantations and with views to Koggala Lake.

The ultimate test to any establishments comes down to service and quality of the food and KK wins hands down, a fantatstic team, an owner who speaks fluent Singhalese and a team of chefs who use only the freshest ingredients to ensure an ever changing daily menu of choices.

Trips to Galle and Galle Fort open up opportunities to visit gorgeous restaurants like The Sun House run by the glamorous Henri, trips to Why beach a private beach club run by Claudia and shopping at Minimango's for beautifully designed clothes run by Jo and Jack

If you want to be really courageous , go native and take to the bicycle and cycle you way around the neighbourhood. The locals will love you for it

Alternatively sign up to a Singhalese language course at KK , I did and lost out in the final exam to the owner who I still think cheated

It's been ten years since we have been to Sri Lanka and this was our first visit to Galle and the surrounding neighbourhood. We loved it so much we are heading back again in March for a short stay at KK and to enjoy again the delights of this magical place.

We stayed in the Mango suite for three nights just before Christmas 08 after four nights at the Fortress. We then went to Tintagel for one night, Tea trails for a couple of nights, Kandalama Suites for two and then back to Tintagel for two nights. Having flown in from the Swiss winter four days directly on the beach was exactly what we needed. The switch then to KK was perfect as you can really appreciate the location, the uniqueness of the concept and the hospitality of George, Pudupu, Henry, Suranga and the rest of the KK team.
The property is spotlessly maintained and cleanliness is at the top of the agenda (a big issue for my partner and something that has let many Sri Lankan hotels down in the past). We awoke early most mornings listening to the peacocks and sounds of the nearby jungle. Henry would serve an early morning tea and the day would slowly get going.
The Mango & Tamarind suites are probably the best for Peacock watching with the Peacock/honeymoon suite better for sunsets. The garden & tea suites would be perfect for 2 couples travelling together.
As the beach is not far away then either Suranga will drop you off in the tuc-tuc or George will arrange transport if necessary. If you need anything then they will do their very best to accomodate you.
If you have ever thought about living in Sri Lanka then this is about as good as it gets. KK is very authentic and George's attention to detail is seen everywhere.
KK is a place not to be missed and we will be back shortly. Sitting on the balcony was bliss and the beauty of such a small hotel is that you feel very much at home.
I had read from earlier reports about water / bike issues . George has virtually finished upgrading all the water sytems so no problems of the water front and new bikes will be arriving shortly. Riding around the lake before sunset or around the country lanes is great fun and allows you to enjoy a slower pace and take all the pictures you want. As ever, Sri Lankan smiles abound.
One last word of advice...have a few Arrack Sours...Henry makes the best i have ever tasted!
We took George's SUV to Colombo which was great and in line with the quality and positioning of the hotel as most other hotel arranged transfers tended to be via Minivans.
My final thank you is for George referring on the KK website to the agents "SriLankaInStyle" (based out of Colombo). I booked everything with Daminda (the general manager) and they were perfect in terms of looking out for us, recommending places to stay, see and other options. Daminda and the team picked us up outside the plane and delivered us back safe and sound 2 weeks later, and were always available to talk & discuss ideas with. People like George and Daminda are what SrI Lankan holidays are all about!

We stayed at KK in December 2008 for 6 nights in the Peacock Suite at the end of a magical Honeymoon. From the time that we were collected by helicopter at Koggola to the time we were delivered to our hotel for our final night in Colombo, the experience was sublime. George, Pubudu, Henry and all the staff made us feel totally at home. The rooms are sexy, cool and elegant without being pretentious. The food is fresh and beautifully prepared without being over the top. The atmosphere is wonderfully calm but you never feel the need to whisper. The staff are genuinely kind and attentive without being at all obsequious or pushy. With George Copper at the helm, KK will, most importantly, be a great deal of fun! We loved George's dogs and cats being around. We loved the monkeys in the trees and the abundance of wildlife. We loved NOT watching TV! We loved cycling around the local villages and down to the beach. The only disappointment was not being able to pack Henry into our suitcase and take him back home.....We will be back, very soon!!
