“Stunning retreat, super staff, if only we'd stayed here longer!”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

KK is absolutely worth its 5 stars. We stayed in the Hellaconia Suite for 3 nights and only wish we had stayed longer. The grounds are beautiful with great attention to detail - there are stacks of history / picture books of Sri Lanka in the pavillion (and in each suite) and plenty of board games. We loved coming over for drinks and chess in the colonial surroundings prior to dinner. The food was absolutely delicious and so we ate here each night. In particular, on the Friday, there was a Sri Lankan feast where we tried a bit of everything.

The view from the pool loungers overlooking the tea plantation and koggala lake is stunning, and the water a perfect temperature. We definitely made sure we could properly enjoy the pool and view! The staff were splendid - professional, quiet, approachable and very good english. George himself was very friendly and came to say hello and make sure everything was ok which was a nice touch. George and his team made the place and were able to offer a service that matched the beautiful surroundings. I have to also mention the lizard that was as big as the dog and we had fun spotting him around the plantation (is he part of the team too?)

I had been a little wary in case KK was hard to get to having been to South India and feeling very sick from the crazy driving and constant horns and noise. However we had an easy and interesting train from Bentota to Galle (world's easier to understand than the Indian railways) and a smooth, quiet (result!) and surprisingly quick transfer by KK's car back to the airport along the entire of the expressway.

Thanks George and team, we loved our stay!

p.s. the only thing I could ask for was some KK postcards, would loved to have taken some back to add to our collection and to write at the pool. We couldn't find any in the pavillion or at the KK shop in Galle. George did write us a card to say thanks for coming and hoping we enjoyed our stay which was a great touch so that will be going on the postcard wall!

My husband and I just got back from a short two night stay at KK. We had a fabulous time and were very impressed and grateful the staff honored a non-refundable deposit we had put down on a room a few years prior. The grounds are stunning and we very much enjoyed the natural setting, the wildlife, the resident dogs and cats, and even the cheeky monkeys that congregated on the roof of our suite in the middle of the night (although it initially gave me a fright). Mosquito repellent is a must, but most travellers expect this whilst travelling in Sri Lanka, especially in the jungle. We found the staff very friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed the services of the hotel tuk tuk driver, very nice guy, and Chinthana was very helpful in the booking process and providing lots of information to help plan our stay. The owner, George Cooper, was also very friendly and interested in connecting with his guests and making them feel welcome.

We stayed in the Tea Suite and it was furnished beautifully - we loved the four poster bed and the outdoor shower. We very much appreciated KK's environmental conscious and responsible tourism.

All our meals were lovely and tasty. We especially enjoyed the Thai chicken curry for dinner and the Sri Lankan breakfast! If I had one suggestion, I would have preferred fresh brewed tea at breakfast over hot water and tea bags. I was even hoping that perhaps the tea from the property would be served.

All and all great stay and can't wait to return to KK and Sri Lanka.

We wanted to celebrate our 3oth anniversary booked for 5 nights not knowing what it was going to be like and boy it turned out to be an amazing surprise as KK is wonderful haven. Everything about KK is magical from the setting to the staff, George Cooper and the wildlife, just took our breath away. The peacocks and purple faced leaf eating monkeys wake you in the morning with their calls it was just amazing.
Everyone at the KK were wonderful and to receive a note from George before we were leaving thanking us for staying at KK to celebrate our anniversary was just lovely and we left with a great feeling completely relaxed after having a great time.
All the people associated with KK from the staff to the locals and the Tuk Tuk drivers were great with us and we thoroughly recommend KK. We will return again in the near future as we have found our first experience of KK and Sri Lanka so magical.

KK is a little patch of paradise. Tucked away from it all, you can really unwind and relax. Perfect individual villas that are very private. Fabulous owner and staff and even some resident dogs and a very vocal little cat. Our family of 6 spent time here over Xmas and it was a very good choice. I suggest you book and spoil yourself !!!

Room Tip: We had the Mango villa. It was close to everything but still very private and quiet

We have just spent 7 nights at the wonderful Kahanda Kanda, what more can I say that others haven't said already. Yes the location is positively tranquil and the facilities first rate. But I think what sets this retreat, (one really can't call this a hotel) apart, is the service of the staff - comparable with the best in any 5 star location globally. George Cooper (if one looked up Bon Vivant in the dictionary - you would see a picture of George), is the most gracious host and has imparted in his staff the very best standards in service and hospitality. His right hand man Chinthana was always on point, whether you wanted transportation organised for 4am in the morning, or were merely inquisitive as to the ingredients in your New Years roti - he was the man who can - George should count himself extremely fortunate to have such a fellow.
The other staff were all exceptionally well drilled - being a frequent traveller, one notices such little things as which side the waiter approaches to fill your glass or remove a plate. Its the little things that make the difference and George has it nailed.
We actually stayed in two different rooms, the Peacock suite and the Mango suite - both were excellent, though I would lean towards Mango as it was slightly more cosy and had a better view of the surrounding countryside which was repleat with strutting peacocks, acrobatic monkeys and other animals. But Peacock is certainly the more luxurious of the two.
Having stayed over the New Year, we were treated to a sumptuous buffet dinner of several courses and a fireworks display, which went down as well as the dinner and champagne - very well to say the least!!
In short, this was a wonderful stay and I would thoroughly recommend to any wavering prospective guest to spend a few days, at George's oasis in the countryside!!

Room Tip: Please bear in mind this is the countryside and so one should expect a little animal disturbance, pa...

We stayed here for one night at the end of a two week holiday travelling around Sri Lanka. We wanted to stay somewhere special and were delighted with this choice.

We had the Auraliya Suite, which was very private and nice and secluded, with a balcony looking out into the trees which were repleat with monkeys. The staff were all extremely friendly, helpful and accomodating.

Having booked through Mr and Mrs Smith, we had a free 1 hour all body massage included, which was extremely relaxing, and also a free cookery session, where we tried our hand at a bit of rice and curry in the spotless kitchen.

I am a little late in posting this as we stayed at KK for the final three nights of our two weeks in Sri Lanka. It is a most beautiful place to stay on top of a hill with amazing views across the jungle and down to the lake below. The infinity pool has a great view of the latter down a valley.

We stayed in the Tamarind Room which was delightful and we loved the fact that the room was filled with books and ornaments so it was like being a guest in someone's house, rather than a hotel. We had a large balcony at the back which overlooked the jungle and each morning there was a peacock in a clearing displaying his beautiful tail and doing his best to attract a mate! We also saw lots of birds and monkeys who were after the mangos. My husband also saw a mongoose which I sadly missed. I thought that although the bedroom was lovely, the dual shower area was a little tired. I have read on here some bits about bathrooms being done up so this may be on the list. The lock on the door also wasn't that secure - although I appreciate there were security people around at night.

We had a cookery lesson on our first afternoon which was great fun and very interesting - the kitchen was spotless and my husband is delighted to now know how to cook rice to perfection! The food we ate was good but it would have been nice to have some more Sri Lankan food rather than European. The highlight was our Sri Lankan curry night which was delicious.

We went to Galle Fort by tuktuk which was good to visit but not as good as we thought it was going to be from the reviews we had read. There were a few nice shops and restaurants but it was smaller than expected. My husband did get to see the cricket ground though! We got a tuktuk to The Sun House for lunch which was up in the hills and had a very calm aura. As they were quiet the manager also showed us the adjacent Dutch House which was amazing - earmarked for a future stay perhaps.

We also went on a cycle ride on our last afternoon which was amongst the best things we did. It was about 18 km and took an hour and a half - with a few hills! However, it provided a great chance to see part of the real Sri Lanka and the paddy fields with the egrets and the sun low in the sky is an image we won't forget. We went along winding paths and through villages and were met halfway with king coconuts for refreshment. We finished close to Wijaya Beach and got a tuktuk there for a drink in a beach bar to watch the surfers and the sun go down, a great end to a brilliant holiday.

Other highlights of KK include Rosie the cat who was delightful and always came to say hello. She slept under our sunloungers a lot and was a pleasure to have around. I think she would have liked to come back to the UK but the boys said that George would not be pleased with that!

We booked directly with KK and Chinthana was most helpful via email. He sent over some general information regarding KK and visiting Sri Lanka in general which was also very useful. So we brought over currency and changed it on arrival at the airport as advised instead of doing it in the UK. We also didn't take a huge amount of books as KK had a lot!
