My husband and I booked in to The Red Lion, with a Groupon voucher, because we wanted to find somewhere that is half way between where we live and our new great grand daughter.
Before booking I asked if they had a disabled twin room and was told that although the room was not really a disabled room it was on the ground floor. As long as it is a twin room that will do.
We arrived exhausted after battling the tailbacks on the M25 to find that there are only double beds on the ground floor.
After arguing with me, while I stood there on my crutches gasping for a cup of tea, then rifling repeatedly through a stack of papers to find who had taken our booking the unsmiling, surly proprietor said he would give us two rooms.
The original bed he gave us was so worn out every movement sent the springs boinging and protesting. The other one was reasonable but not comfortable according to my husband. We both lay down and fell asleep waking up at 8.30 starving hungry.
The Groupon included a burger and a drink which on the phone I had been told we could put the price of towards a meal so we ordered the meat pie and ham and eggs.
The pastry was tasteless and undercooked, of the six pieces of meat the pie contained three were pure gristle, two undercooked and the last was OK. It came with unpeeled new potatoes and gravy and little green bullets. I ate the meat, potatoes and gravy. My husband said the ham had a weird taste and the eggs were hard fried and the chips after the first three were solid. A sign of being re-heated in a microwave.
We then went to bed. I folded the quilt into quarters, which was when I found all the stains on the cream underside which had not shown on the top dark side. I folded the duvet (which was solid) in half and added all the pillows and the four I had brought with me to try to make the bed reasonably comfortable. I woke in the night feeling very ill. The next morning I felt dreadful and neither of us could face any food. The doctor says we had mild food poisoning. It is now Wednesday (we ate on Saturday evening) and the diarrhea has just finished.
We didn't have any breakfast although it was paid for and we told them how ill we felt. We were met with blank stares and told to wait a minute and just left sitting there.
We traveled on to where we were going and then came back for the night.
Which brings me to security. The hotel part of the place is left open at all times day and night. Anyone can walk in from the beer garden. Door are secured by cheap Yale locks and no one to see if someone was trying to break in. There are no windows in the room but double doors which are held by one bolt. You angle the bolts together and then pull the doors closed and one bolt holds them not very securely. Both rooms are the same but the doors of one have at some time been kicked in and not properly repaired, so gaps left.
The shower cubicles are beautiful and big until you turn the water on. Cold water - lovely spray but even add a trickle of warm and it can hardly get out of the shower head. Turn the shower head upside down and the water barely runs out.
The noise the first night went on until 12:45 and when we said something about the foul language just outside our room we were told 'this is a pub'.
It is a pub cum restaurant cum hotel. The situation and facilities could make it a goldmine but the hotel only had four people staying (two being us) and only two other people in the restaurant. The pub isn't exactly heaving with customers either. Lots of noise and bad language but no atmosphere.
From previous reviews we learned that the pool table had been outside the windows/doors but had been moved and replaced by tables. These three feet from the only ventilation in the room with no net curtains so if you wanted any degree of privacy you have to close the curtains. Very gloomy. The ceiling fans have one speed - fast.
Porn on the TV. I suppose their main customers are what used to be called commercial travelers or reps.
We were looking for somewhere to stop off 4 or 5 times a year when we visit Lincolnshire. The location is fine but the place is not.
I have looked at the other reviews and wonder what happened. Was it because we came on a Groupon? The idea of a Groupon is to act as a come on like a supermarket lossleader. Get you in cheaply and hope you come back again. Which would have worked with us as we were looking for somewhere to stay 4 or 5 times a year.
The only person who gave us a smile was the waitress. We found the other two surly and miserable.
By the way we got charged nearly £30 for the meal that gave us food poisoning even though we did not have the breakfasts and nothing rebated for the burger both of which were already paid for. It would have been cheaper to stay in a Cambridge hotel than here.
Would I come back again - DEFINITELY NOT. It has the makings of being a good business but needs someone with personality and an idea of customer care to run it.

We welcome feedback and take reviews and comments very seriously and feel this review is very unjust and unfair. Firstly when you arrived to check-in we kindly explained that we do not have twin disabled rooms and Jo the staff member who took your booking also does Housekeeping and would not of promised this to you. But to make the start of your weekend with us a happy stay we offered you and your husband separate rooms as the room next door to yours was available to which you was very happy with as you explained to us that you and your husband sleep in separate rooms at home and this would be perfect. When making your Groupon booking for accommodation you also took up the Groupon offer for our Burger Deal to which you asked If you could change these to something else off our menu to which again we kindly agreed. While eating your meals our waitress Katie asked on check back If everything was ok to which you replied "yes, fine Thankyou". However the next morning you decided to complain to a different member of staff (Tammy) that the food the night before was inedible and that our chips are' microwaved' to which Tammy explained that none of our food is 'microwaved' but we feel you decided to mention this the next day so this might be removed from the bill by a different member of staff. With regards to porn on the t.v we have freeview in the rooms so we have no control over what previous people staying may of tuned into. Security here is very sufficient, the pub itself is fully alarmed, the car park is well lit and to get access to the rooms is by key only. The management accommodation also over looks the rooms and the car park.
With regards to Housekeeping and bed linen I'm very surprised that nothing was mentioned to us or other staff members after the first night as you would of had to stay in them again on your second night and this could of been rectified If true. When booking a room within a pub some understanding must be made that there will be noise and people enjoying themselves where drink is involved and people are advised on the phone that on the weekend the pub is open till late for customers and for residents. The Hotel was fully booked this particular weekend after we 'gave' your husband the last vacant room.
What you failed to mention in your 'review' is that my partner had to stop your vehicle leaving the car park before you left without paying and also having to ask for the Groupon vouchers as they could of been passed on or reused again for someone else. Your comment on 'food poisoning' is unfair as there is no proof to back this up plus nothing of this illness was mentioned to any of the team. I'm sure If I was ill from 'food poisoning' I wouldn't of been able to travel onto Leicester and to carry my weekend on as normal.

What do you expect for £50.00 per room per night?
A clean bed, A room which smells fresh, Friendly staff, A clean en-suite with lots of hot water & fresh towels, A kettle with decent coffee sachets, lots of tea & hot choc sachets, plenty of milk mini tubs, nice biscuits, blackout curtains, breakfast served till noon, double glazed windows,? YES, you can have all this. Ie anything is not to your satisfaction, Tell the staff, and they will be helpful.
The pub is a real local where the locals are very friendly and welcoming. It is a very happy place wether you chose the lounge or the bar. There is appetising pub food served hot - and tasty.. There is real ale and good wine & coffee for those who wish.
There is a family run atmosphere - in fact all the staff are like a happy family. All told, you leeave feeling you had a memorable experience.

Well I feel this needs two reviews. One for the Pub and one for the accommodation.
Pub. Its a local pub the only one for miles. But the staff were fab, making everyone welcome and making the extra effort with visitors from outside of the community.
They serve a good range of beer s and ciders.
The restaurant is nicly presented and the food is good pub food, no quality issues fresh cooked and portions to satisfy a Yorkshire man.

Ah now Accommodation.
Lets remember something here this is £50 per night for 2.........
My bed was on its last legs, the toilet wasn't fastened down, the soap holder was rusty, there were cobwebs behind the curtains and a pool table just outside.
But its £25 each. In Suffolk.
So all in all very good and if all you need is a place to get a good meal, a good drink and crash into bed ...Its ideal.
We had a good night.

Nice lively pub with good quality well priced food served, also serving local micro brewery ales which I can recommend. The accommodation is well priced and good value for money. We stayed in room 11 which was a good size with en-suite shower, TV, drink making facilities etc. I only found a couple of negatives with this room and could so easily have been put right; the en-suite had a smell of stale urine so clearly it had not been cleaned well enough and the shower curtain had mould at its base. As stated earlier the food was good but you do have to wait a long time for it to be cooked even when they are not busy. Breakfast was woefully slow, it took an hour from when we sat down to it being served. The staff were all very friendly, helpful and welcoming I can’t praise then enough. Would we stay here again? absolutely yes, good quality well priced food, reasonable room giving good value for money.

Room Tip: Rooms in the anex open onto the garden so can get noisy on warm evenings

I popped in just for lunch. Hadn't been here before but was very pleased with the quality of service and the food.

Dined in the restaurant part, which was very comfortable and with plenty of fresh air on what turned out to be a hot and sunny afternoon.

Will definitely be back!
