Having recently purchased a Hi-Life discount dining Card, this was one of the Restaurants available with the discount. (50% off 3 course meal)

The service was excellent from start to finish and the food was of a very good standard. Without the discount card, we would probably not go back as it's very pricey (bill was £90odd), but an excellent dining experience for a 1 off special occasion. You can pay up to £50 for just 1 dish, so bare that in mind when booking!

I have read a lot of reviews saying that The King's Head is stuck in a time warp and of course they are right! But isn't that exactly why many of the regular customers go there? If you are seeking a contemporary restaurant don't choose it!! The Kings Head is expensive and predictable. I love going to Sketch in London and Bourbon Steak in Miami but In both of those cool and modern restaurants I have had bad meals. At The Kings Head I haven't. This year I spent Christmas Day with George and his Team and we had an absolutely lovely experience and a brilliant Christmas lunch. dd-nd asked what modern restaurant would serve Melba toast. Well they wouldn't. But they do at The Kings Head because it's not a modern restaurant!!! And I like Melba toast..

As the title suggests this place never let's us down. It seems to run by clockwork. Drinks in the little cosy bar next to a lovely open fire, offered Menues, then taken through to the beamed traditional restaurant. The staff are there looking after you and the food is just lovely. We spent a very pleasant Sunday afternoon there. If you go onto al la carte, the price can rocket but the house wine is excellent and very reasonable.

We only go there once a year for our annual Christmas lunch and we always have a lovely time. The set festive menu is a very reasonable £33 and for that we had a delicious pumpkin soup followed by apple and calvados sorbet. The main course of turkey and all the trimmings was piping hot and all that could be expected of good Christmas fayre. The dessert trolley is definitely stuck in the 70s as has been said before - but it's delicious! Sherry trifle, chocolate mousse, brandy snaps. Yum. It's terribly old-fashioned, but that's what we like about it. I get fed up of being charged astronomical sums for bite-sized portions and going home having spent a hundred quid still in need of a sandwich. Nothing cutting edge on the menu here and be joyful for it!

We ate at the Kings Head on Saturday night based on recommendations from friends.

To start with some positives, the service was friendly if slightly shambolic at times. Our starters were ok and we had a very pleasant drink in the lounge before dinner.

However, the food cannot have moved on since about 1970. Melba toast accompanied our starters - what modern restaurant would dream of serving melba toast! The signature Aylesbury Duck main course was a massive disappointment. If you like a huge piece of duck covered in a thick layer of fat and cooked with zero imagination or creativity - this dish is for you. To cap it all, they had a dessert trolley full of tired, insipid looking desserts which we couldn't face. Neither could we contemplate the crepe suzette flambed at the table! Surely this went out in about 1975. Unfortunately this wasn't an ironic retro take on a '70's theme - at £48.00 a head just for the food this place has obviously taken its prices into the 21st century but not its cooking!

The place was full and it therefore appeals to a certain clientele so good luck to it! But if you are looking for any creative cooking try somewhere else!
