“Great place and great hospitality”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

We stayed here four days and really enjoyed the holiday. The house is beautiful, and really gives a sense of the sea. The paintings, the photos, the forniture. The room was very big, and we slept well. As the other write the breakfast was good as well, with everything you need. If I have to find some negative points, the towels were not changed in four days, and this was a bit of a problem. We could have maybe asked, but that's not how it should be. The last night we got also a mosquito invasion, but they were not biting, just very noisy. The owners were lovely, and we really enjoyed their dedication, openness and friendless. The town of Gastes is quite empty, but you can have a good dinner at the nearby town. The position is very central to go around in the Landes, or you can just swim in the lake, that is 5 minutes walk from your door. The waters are very shallow, so maybe good for the children. So to conclude I would like to suggest this place to anyone. For he Italians reading. If you know the book "Oceano, mare" this place is indeed the "locanda Almayer".

We have just returned from a two week stay at L'Estanquet. As a group of three families we used the gite & the B&B - both were beautifully decorated and the gite was very well equipped. Also really lovely gardens & garden furniture. The property is next to the road which leads into the village but we weren't bothered by any road noise. As advertised it is a 5 minute stroll to the lake beach and there is a local shop over the road. As others have mentioned Alex & Claire are wonderful hosts. We didn't see much of Claire as she was busy looking after her newborn baby but Alex was a pleasure to deal with, happy to answer any questions but also gave you your own space. Having stayed in numerous gites in France I would highly recommend L'Estanquet both for the high standards and location - close to lakes & beaches.

An excellent bed and breakfast within easy reach of Rockley Watersports (where our daughter was working) at La Reserva campsite and the lake.
Extremely good value.
A tastefully decorated, comfortable, quietly sophisticated family home with 3 en-suite bedrooms, our favourite was over looking the garden.
Alex, Claire, Nick and Julia looked after us beautifully with a very friendly discreet approach.
The use of bicycles and a fridge were added bonuses, the table tennis table and English view TV (to catch up on the Tour de France) a pleasant distraction.
It was a pleasure to meet toddler Leo and Louis (the labradoodle) was gorgeous and well behaved.
The breakfasts, especially the home made yoghurt, and the simple in house evening meal were delicious.
Gastes in our opinion, offered a limited choice of restaurants, but it is a small place, but nearby Parentis-en -Born provided excellent restaurants.
The cycle routes in the area are extensive and well maintained.
The Atlantic beaches and the dune were stunning, and provided good surf. Hiring equipment was easy and good value.
Buses appeared limited, our hire car gave us flexibility.

Room Tip: Room over looking garden was quieter and more spacious

We have just returned from an excellent week staying at the gite of L'Estanquet. It is a very well equipped property with four bedrooms, each with a modern shower room. The beds are very comfortable, the kitchen is very well stocked and the attention to detail is superb. An extra bonus, at no extra cost, is the WiFI, Wii (with games), washing machine and BBQ. Alex and Claire are superb hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them. On arrival, Claire sat us down with a map and showed us some good places to go - there's nothing like a local to tell you which restaurants to try, towns to visit or places to take the kids. How else would we have enjoyed two lovely meals at Chez Flo in the next door town or found the inflatables, water sports and restaurants at Port Maguide.
The proximity to the lake makes the gite an ideal base for a stay in this area. There are nearby tennis courts and the cycle path is easy to pick up just 200 metres from the house.
Overall, a great place to stay with great hosts who give you your space but are on hand if you need them.

We have stayed in the hotel for 7 days and did not regret any of them! The hotel is well located near to a lake and app. 15 min from the sea. The rooms are excellent and designed with a precious sense to detail. I can only agree to the previous comments regarding the delicisious breakfast! Besides that Claire and Alex have a great overview of the region, its interesting corners worth to see and great places for lunch, coffee, etc. What we have appreciated the most the great hospitality - we have felt like being home!

If you are travelling to this region of France we thoroughly recommend staying with Claire,Alex and family. You are made to feel welcome the moment that you walk through the gate, both from Claire and Alex, together with little Leo and the dog, Louis. This English couple have created a homely and welcoming B&B.The room that we had was spacious and tastefully decorated with en-suite facilities.Even though it over looked the road, we were never woken by the passing traffic, as the french style shutters did their job perfectly. Breakfast was taken on the decking outside and consisted of Fresh fruit juice, fresh fruit,,home made yoghurt [which was delicious, even took the liberty of asking Claire for the recipe!!] croissants and toast, together with freshly made coffee. Claire and Alex were very helpful in making suggestions on where to visit and the best places to eat etc.We would definitely return and have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending L'estanquet as an excellent place to stay.

Room Tip: Go onto the L'estanquet web site and look at the rooms.Book early!!

This was a great location near a beautiful lake in the middle of the tiny town of Gastes. Our hosts, Alex & Claire, were incredibly friendly and helpful, we had a great time chatting with them and thoroughly enjoyed staying there. The B&B is clean and well kept, breakfast was fantastic and the area was great. The only note is that the walls are a little bit thin so a very light sleeper might hear other guests.
