Visited this restaurant last night with three girl friends. It offers cheap pub food at high class restaurant prices!

I had calamari to start: four frozen rings on a bed of lettuce and battered fish for main. The fish was ok, but the chips were frozen and the peas were stone cold, poorly mashed frozen peas - yuk. Could have cooked better myself!

They seriously need to lower their prices if this is typical of the food they are going to serve.

The Emperor on Black Pond Lane is a terrific gastronomic find combining the tradition of a local pub with sumptuous decor, various snugs and a blazing log fire in the bar and a thoroughly modern dining experience. The staff are attentive, the food is fabulous with generous portion sizes .... The roast rib beef was succulent, vegetables cooked to that just perfect crunch and the the chocolate fondant pudding was the best I'd ever tasted. The whole affair was complimented incredibly well by a great jazz trio playing in the main restaurant. I can't recommend highly enough.

I really used to like this pub but with with the new management everything has gone downhill. The staff who were students were out of their depths. Landlords were drinking with friends in the garden rather than managing the place. The food took ages to arrive and the drinks even longer. The food was tasteless and overpriced. Avoid!

We went on a very busy evening and the service was friendly but slow.

One of our meals was cold and two others only just acceptably warm. When we brought it to the staffs attention they immediately took the meal and heated it and gave us a complimentary bottle of wine.

Overall it struck that they had taken on too many patrons for the evening and were struggling to keep up.
