We're travelling from the midlands to Brighton and needed an overnight stop near Slough to visit family and take them out for a birthday meal treat. We don't know this area at all and I found it very difficult to find anywhere that would give us the combination of good but basic overnight accommodation + a good place for the birthday meal. Burnham Beeches (BB) was too high class for the type of meal we were looking for on this occasion; so our relative recommended a good local pub restaurant nearby (it was excellent) and I plumped for BB to sleep because I couldnt find anywhere that seemed to offer what we needed in the area. Unfortunately this meant we didn't arrive at BB until about 11 pm and we were tired and hot. We do like our windows open all night and as I had requested a room with a walk in shower (as opposed to one over the bath, which my husband finds difficulty accessing) the only such room available at the time of my late booking, was downstairs. When we went to open the windows, we saw that we were surrounded by tall shrubs & trees and didn't therefore feel safe leaving them open all night : there was an air con unit that we used, but it was inevitably noisy (I know -cant please some people!- but this is how it was). Breakfast next morning was very good, but we didn't really like the help yourself hot buffet; although good food, it would have been so much nicer to have been offered the option to be served.
One factor which I do think deserves criticism, was that there was no mini bar in the room and not even complimentary bottles of water. Arriving so late, and having been on the go since early morning, we would have appreciated these being available . However, the setting is lovely and the staff were all very professional yet friendly, which is ideal. Overall, with so little time there, it wasn't the best place for us that night. Moral of story I guess is along the lines of 'horses for courses'
