“A little bit different !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2013

I was a bit hesitant before arriving at The Crab as having read the reviews they were so mixed, I need not have worried though. Our welcome was warm and informative.
My Husband and i had booked Raffles. Although up some very steep steps we were very impressed. The Decor was amazing and all the little extras of a high quality. The cleanliness was second to none. Our friends had Wakiki Beach below us that too was very well done, a little dark and maybe a bit warm but a fan was provided. Please be aware that if you look out the Raffles window you can see guests in the hot tub below ( which i did and shut the curtains quickly, i wont tell you what i saw !).
We chose to eat off the set menu with the addition of the Scallops for starter. All the food was tasty, hot and very well presented. Nothing could be faulted. The service from Joanne was very friendly and the staffs knowledge of the Menu very good.
Breakfast was a slightly different matter, the service lacking. We had to ask for things that had not been topped up , no juice, butter for our toast etc and a bit of mould on the toast when it arrived! The cooked breakfast was again very tasty and no complaints.
We really enjoyed our stay at The Crab and would definitely return.

Room Tip: Choose Raffles for quietness, away from the road but beware of steep steps. The very large, deep bat...

Last night I took a business colleague to the Crab, believing it to be a top class local restaurant.
I should have realised that service was going to be an issue when the first round of drinks, a glass of champagne and a JD and coke took twenty minutes to arrive.
Later we were shown to our table and given an amuse-bouche, the starters arrived after about twenty minutes. A couple came about fifteen minutes later and were seated at an adjacent table. They had eaten their starters and main course before we had seen our main course.
We had been seated for over an hour and there was no sign of the main course.
I have no reason to think that the food was anything other than good - given that it was SO expensive but the service was appalling.
Don't go to the Crab if you are hungry or on a budget.

Monday lunch (first in). Went to the pub part -slight hiatus whilst they checked we could have a table of choice (the place was empty). Linen serviettes boded well. Comprehensive (mainly fish) menus. My fish arrived uncooked and had to be returned to be cooked through which meant my wife and I actually ate at different times. The food was exceptionally well presented but rather tasteless. Apologies cost nothing and no concessions given (like free glass of wine). The service charge they added was an insult in the circumstances and we removed it.
The hotel caters for Newbury race folk with rooms at the back of the restaurant /pub.
We were left feeling this was a pretentious venue that needs to be careful about its catering.

My girlfriend & I stayed at the crab in July..we arrived slightly before check in and were swiftly shown to our room which was named "chiva som"..the room was very nice, tranquil, fresh with an exotic feel which we both liked, into the garden/patio area was our own hot tub which was pre heated & good to go, it was also a very good size..the garden areas are quite enclosed with fences all around to maintain privacy, so don't expect nice views whilst chilling in the tub..this didn't bother us and we were more than happy to relax in the hot tub well into the evening! Overall it was a great stay..if your just looking to chill out & relax the crab is a great choice.

We stayed here in the Bora Bora hot tub room for 2 nights and our overall experience was just amazing. We were checked in with absolutely no fuss and received a complimentary glass of Prosecco shortly after which went down well! Our room was clean and very fresh, loved the private terrace where we were able to sit and relax and also the hot tub too, really great to have a soak in there in the evening with a glass of fizz. We dined in the restaurant on Saturday night and I have to say the fillet of beef was one of the most amazing meals I have ever had, helped more by the very attentive restaurant staff also (and at breakfast both mornings too) Special mention to Rebecca and Denise at the front of house, really friendly and professional, had a minor problem with our bathroom but we were compensated for this so really happy with the way it was dealt with. Great all round experience and a really great nights sleep too.

Room Tip: Hot tub rooms are great, private terrace also. Neighbours in close proximity though and overlooked b...

Me and my partner booked to stay in one of the hot tub rooms at the crab to celebrate our anniversary. . On arrival (slightly earlier than the advertised check in time) we were greeted and shown straight to our room by the very friendly and helpful receptionist. The room (la mamounia) was perfect our pre ordered prosecco was on ice and the hot tub ready to go! We chose to have dinner at the hotel restaurant, the service and food were 5* in the morning breakfast was delivered to our room at the exact time we specified.. all in all our time at the crab was perfect and I would not change a thing!! Cannot wait to visit again soon and try out another room!

I stayed here in August 2013, and was disappointed. I stayed at the Soneva Fushi room. It looked over the road which is not what you would expect at the price charged. The corridors were scuffed and needed a coat of paint. The radiator cover almost fell off when I lifted a glass off it. The room was pretty small for the price and the decoration a bit gimmicky. Again only a problem because of the price charged.
The breakfast was good but I found the evening meal bland. A sauce with the fish would not have gone amiss at 18 quid instead of a bed of mashed potato. The dessert platter was a disaster at 14 quid for two. Cheesecake was a foam of plasticky processed cream. The raspberry mousse had no taste of fruit. I felt cheated. Oh, and the table was sticky. I won't be going back.
