“Excellent Stay.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Arrived, greeted and checked in to the room promptly. Hot tub was great, everything working in the excellent room. Dinner was fantastic, service was attentive and not pushy. We had the set menu and was very reasonably priced. Only slight down side was the noisy road right at the side of our room, but tthis would not put me off from coming again. All round a very enjoyable stay

My Husband and I have just returned for a fabulous night in the Cipriani room with a hot tub. When we arrived we were warmly greeted by the reception staff and informed that the room would be ready shortly ( we arrived at 3.30pm ) we waited in the bar area and only waited about 10 mins before we were informed that our room was ready. The room itself was quite small but very lovely and had everything that we needed. We has dinner in the restaurant which was fantastic...the desserts are amazing !! Breakfast the following morning was equally as good the eggs were perfect. Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: The rooms will a hot tub are great fun.

We stayed in the Bora Bora Suite and the Room was fantastically decorated with a big screen TV, Nespresso Machine and a Hot Tub in your own private garden. It was very hard to leave in the morning.

Couple of advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:

Hot Tub

Great Service

Great Food

Wifi

Nespresso Machine

Great Rural Location for walks

Free morning paper

Disadvantages

It's expensive and the food too

4pm Check Inn...Far too late

No real bar area

Sausages at breakfast tasted cheap

Room Tip: If you want to go make sure you book up to 3 months in advance if you want a hot tub room.

Ate at the Crab last year while staying in Newbury and have to say the food was fab. I did splash out on the Fruits de Mare for a treat, but well worth it. I'm a huge seafood fan but even I couldn't finish what was put in front of me, and it was good (everything from lobster to cockles). Highly recommend for food, haven't stayed at the hotel.

We have come to the crab regularly for the past two years or so and we are never disappointed - the food is always exquisite and service is always good (except on gold cup days when they get rather overwhelmed...).

I would highly recommend the Assiette of desserts as the most amazing dessert ever: always a beautifully presented array of puddings and always plenty there for two to share; and who doesn't want 6 mini puddings when you can't decide!!

Always a lovely experience and never fails to delight every time we go.

We only stayed one night for bed and breakfast. Based on the room rate of £165 per night our expectations were relatively high. Our overall impression was of an overpriced and rather tired hotel (restaurant with rooms).
On the positive side our room (Zen) was comfortable albeit rather small, and breakfast was of a good standard.
On the negative side our room was literally a few feet from the minor road on which The Crab is situated. Although traffic was light, road noise was an irritation from about 0600 onwards. The accomodation block is old, and noise from creaking floorboards both in the corridor and from the room above was very noticeable. Our friends in Tree Tops reported similar problems.
The staff were generally pleasant and helpful, but with one exception did not demonstrate a level of customer service that we would expect from a hotel in this price range.
Decor throughout the hotel was rather dated and tired. The themed rooms (Zen and Treetops) were basic.
Check in time is 1600.

Stayed for one night on Sunday for my girlfriend's 30th birthday. Very welcoming staff, who went out of their way to ensure we had foam pillows as I'm allergic to feathers.
The food was fantastic value. We had the early bird menu and every course was a treat - all the waiters were good natured and efficient too.
We stayed in the Banyan Tree room. The spa was fun, and the room was fine - but just not up to the standard of the service and the restaurant. The traffic was a little noisy in the morning.
Overall - would fully recommend, especially on sundays when the rates are lower.
Thankyou to al the staff for helping to make it a memorable night!

Room Tip: Go for a room not by the road if you're a light sleeper
