“better than expected”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

we had sunday lunch lunch with friends here and having never been befor read the trip advisor reviews and i was a little nervous.
But we were greeted by friendly staff shown to a table in a nice conservatory with menus and drinks we had the last table. A short sunday menu some nice choices I had soup and beef and it was really good the beef especially good rare but not raw nice roasts yorkies not the best but good enough and the soup homemade creamy and hot. Others in the party has lamb (huge slow cooked piece of shoulder) and a really nice looking lemon sole.
All in all very nice indeed not cheap but well worth it good atmosphere and service will be returning.
Chatted with the chef on the way out and mentioned trip advisor he gave a wry smile and said he was sad people had'nt enjoyed there visitbut after the fact there was nothing he could do.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2013 via mobile

The food is excellent. The ambience is ok.....maybe some dimmer more atmospheric lighting? BUT. every time l have been here smoke from the kitchen set the alarm off....thats 4 times. Have the management never heared of 'doors' or ventilation! Compared to the Bull in the same village this place is loosing it.

“Great food and fantastic atmosphere”

I visited this establishment for a meal with my wife this week. A fantastic meal was followed by a very fattening but very enjoyable dessert. I would recommend this pub and will most definately be returning soon

“Used to be great”

We tried the Old Boot after a gap of a couple of years and it was awful. We tried it again when our "usual" pub was too full and found the Old Boot very empty and without atmosphere. We sat by the fire, which meant a view into the cavernous depths of an extension which was dark and empty. The lights of the pub were full on, and that didn't help with the atmosphere either. We felt "exposed" and rather uncomfortable but persevered with our food order. The food was very ordinary, not well presented and just about edible, which is a huge shame as a few years ago whilst having our kitchen rebuilt we'd eaten there every night and loved it! Is the Boot living on the past glories of William & Kate???

“Con”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

Like another reviewer on this site, I too found this restaurant because of Voucher Cloud and the 50% offer. I had been there several months earlier (early 2012) and there had been no issue using the voucher, but went again yesterday (Jan 5th 2013) having seen it on Voucher Cloud again. I printed the voucher with a valid expiry date, got there, ordered our food, ate, went to pay the bill with the deal from the voucher, only to be told "we're not doing that".

We explained the voucher hadn't expired yet, and were told by the owner "it doesn't matter when it expires, we're not doing it. We've never done it."

"But we've used one of these here before," we told him.

"Oh," he replied, "yeah, we did do it once."

He then went on to claim that he'd asked Voucher Cloud to take it down but they hadn't, and that therefore it wasn't his fault. No apology. Nothing.

Having foolishly left it until after we ate to mention the voucher, I didn't feel we had any recourse, and begrudgingly paid the bill and left. But having thought about it since (particularly his initial claim that they'd never accepted the vouchers) and read the other review on this site I'm now quite angry, and would advise anyone to steer clear of this establishment, as the owner is clearly dishonest.

Setting aside the swindling, the food is only reasonable for the price you'd pay with the 50% discount. At almost £20 for all the main courses the size of the portions are criminal - I left still hungry. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about either, and all the furniture is old and dilapidated. Definitely one to avoid.
