Description: "Lu Vottaro " , characteristic inn in the heart of Trentinara in a 1700 structure that keeps some remains dating back to 1000. And ' undoubtedly the exclusive use of selected raw materials that distinguishes it.

We visited on a quiet Thursday evening with only another couple in attendance. Winding through the confusing alleyways of Trentinara, we eventually found the entrance. Upon stepping into the candlelit backyard, we began a magical meal full of small delights and big flavours. A gorgeous setting, with overhead vines, and cheesy romantic music playing in the background. My wife and I loved it.

Cristina was our host and chef for the evening, and was charming and friendly. She took the time to explain their food philosophy and each dish in detail, answering all our questions patiently.

The food is plentiful and delicious, and the wine suited the setting perfectly. Fresh black truffle was generously found in each dish. We were stuffed by the time the main was served, and decided to share one portion of it and dessert.

Drinks are included, with choices for white and red wine. Coffee/tea, and of course a host of digestives, including a homemade fennel spirit, which was very refreshing.

Lastly, the cost was an absolute bargain, considering the quality, quantity, and inclusion of drinks.

One of my favourite meals of the year.

We stumbled upon Lu Vottaro at lunchtime a few days back. The owner was preparing for the evening, but fed us anyway. So well we returned this evening for the full works. No written menu. It all depends on what she can get fresh and from local farms. We had five courses; anti-pasti, soup, pasta, meat and desert. House wine comes with it. All was exquisite, along with attentive service from the owners daughter, who translated every course into English for us. The homemade fennel digestif topped it off!

We drove to this tiny, charming town to find this restaurant because it had been well reviewed in the Slow Food guide. After winding our way through the streets and asking directions multiple times, we finally arrived, only to find the owner alone, preparing food for the next day as this day -- Monday -- the restaurant was closed! Seeing our dejection, he quickly consulted with his wife and they ended up cooking us a fantastic meal, with the restaurant all to ourselves. It was an extraordinary meal: appetizers of local meats and vegetables (the dried and then deep fried pepper leaves were amazing); two first courses (including a velvety chickpea soup), marvelous local cheeses and more to follow. The setting was intimate, with a lovely enclosed garden and the beautiful night sky. The owner kept apologizing for the limited menu but we were delighted, and can only imagine how marvelously one must eat here on a regular evening. Highly, highly recommended!

After visiting Paestum in the morning, my wife and I decide to have lunch at Lu Vottaro, since it was relatively close and in the Slow Food book. Took about an hour to get there, but was well worth it. Lu Vottare is located in the old center, at about the highest point, not where the electronic navigation said. The views from the town are spectacular. No menu, just what is in season and fresh. Multiple courses with soups, bean salads, fresh ricotta souffle with baby vegetables, pasta, and a meat course. House made bread, pasta and wine. Beautifully restored building. Would luv to return and stay for one of the pasta or bread making courses.
