“A little hotel with a very big heart”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

We have stayed our three nights in this small boutique hotel and have found the experience one of the best. The owners have thought of everything - from a delightful welcome pack of home made shortbread and tablet, with other goodies, including a teddy to borrow if your wee one has forgotten his/hers; to excellent advice on what to do and where to go. If the weather allows there is a super pétanque area as well as a lovely extensive garden. The rooms are decorated in a simple but very tasteful style and as a result are very homely and welcoming. Where the hotel really wins though is through it's food. EXCELLENT! Of the highest quality and standard. The choice is wide with a wonderful selection of seafood all locally caught and cooked to a very high standard. The seafood platter was exceptional. All of the food is made on the premises by one of the owners who is a highly competent chef. I am looking freed to returning to Coll for the food experience as much as anything!

Room Tip: There ae only six rooms and all are very pleasant

We spent three nights here last week during a week touring in superb weather which no doubt colours my judgement but the hotel is in an excellent position overlooking the bay with nice gardens including a boules pitch which we enjoyed playing while having a pre dinner drink . Bedrooms and ensuite rather old fashioned but more than adequate but might not suit some tastes . Seafood in the restaurant a good choice and first class at reasonable prices as are the wine list prices . Free bike use for residents useful especially if travelling without a car as some of the nicest beaches are a few miles away .

Excellent location overlooking the harbour. Basking sharks regularly seen in the bay. Great food. Excellent service. Can't fault it, really nice place. This hotel is very popular amongst private pilots who fly into the landing strip on Coll which is 15 minutes away by car. We often vist the hotel for lunch and have never been disappointed. Sometimes the hotel staff will collect us from the airport and if they are busy they arrange a taxi to collect us. Great service and friendly staff. One of the most beautiful settings in Scotalnd make this a must for visitors to the Scottish islands.

Thank you so much for your review.
I agree, it was an exceptional & unfortunate dinner service where a couple of locals spoilt the evening & made service very difficult for our staff. The locals have been spoken too & the staff have received support & guidance.
This may have been why one of the girls seemed off hand. My apologies & I hope you will visit us again & give us another chance.

Our first visit to Coll which we booked up well in advance as accommodation is very limited on the island. The hotel was extermely comfortable, and the staff very friendly. There is a small residents dining room, and maybe we were lucky that the other residents were like-minded, but it made for an excellent atmosphere in the hotel. The food was first class, and local fish was always on the menu. Our room was very comfortable, and the view looking across to Mull superb. We would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel, and will return ourselves.

'Moored up at Arinagour last Sunday evening with some friends and went ashore to the Isle of Coll Hotel. I'd been before when the place was packed to the rafters with visitors and locals alike and had enjoyed the very friendly welcome and excellent real ale.

It was just a little quieter this time and we were able to get a table for six of us. (I'd pre booked which I suggest is a sensible arrangement). That said, every other seat was occupied and judging by the conversations around us the majority of diners were local residents. I learned that the locals use the hotel and bar throughout the year - even during the winter months when there are no visitors. This is perhaps why the place has such a good feel to it. I am also aware that all the staff members are locals too and this compliments the sense of community which is so important to this lovely and welcoming island.

The seafood was abviously fresh and most delicious and not one of us left even a morsel on our plates. The food was perfectly cooked and the sirloin of locally grown beef I had was big, juicey, very tasty and expertly cooked to medium rare - an absolutely mouthwatering experience.

I was expecting the usual 'tourist price hike' but was delighted that my two course meal of chowder and steak came in at £23.

Keep it up Isle of Coll Hotel - you're a shining example to all the other delightful Hebridean islands

We have just had 3 glorious days at this lovely hotel, lovely clean room with toiletries and snacks you wouldn't expect a small hotel to provide. The room was warm, comfortable and large with loads of hot water for a good shower. The food was fantastic such as the scrambled egg with salmon for breakfast, evening meals were delicious as were the packed lunches in a coolbag they supplied each day including the small btl of wine that was an option. Great for when you were out all day touring the island on your bike especially for a picnic stop at the top of Ben Feall, Calgary Point and the lovely white sand beaches. The homemade bread and shortbread were delicious as was the homemade chutney. A separate dining room for residents guaranteed a table for meals. Now why didn't we give this hotel excellent? On 2 occasions, we had to look for staff to serve us after sitting waiting for 15 minutes. I know there were non-residents to serve as well but paying customers are paying customers and a bit more attention in the residents dining room would have been appreciated. However, once we had their attention, the service was very good and pleasant. On check-out, the owner might have shown a bit more interest by asking how we enjoyed our stay. Would we stay again and recommend it? Yes.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. It is aways a great help, positive & negative.
I am so glad you enjoyed your stay with us but sorry to hear of the service you recieved at dinner & check out, this is being addressed. I understand when the Gannet restaurant is very busy we need to have a dedicated member of staff looking after our guests. The same being the case at a busy breakfast, we are looking at a dedicated member of staff at check out so time can be taken to talk & listen to our guests.
Thanks again & we look forward to welcoming you back to the Coll hotel.
