A truly beautiful place to stay.
Beds and kitchen in good condition.
Remember to check ferry time tables and match them with the buses, otherwise it is a couple of kilometers to get there. The same goes for the local grocery store, that closes at half five every day.
A nice day's walk is to go round the Isle of Berneray, starting at the East Beach that the hostel is located at.

Great location in terms of the view. It's a few steps to the beach which, although not the cleanest of beaches, falls down into a pretty location or what. However, the hostel is not in great shape. The beds and sleeping area were pretty dirty, and damned cold at night. Not expecting hotel standards for a hostel, but it's towards the expensive end for hostel prices and we've stayed in much cleaner, warmer and spacious for a lot less. Come here and you're roughing it and paying a premium for the view. Your choice.

The housing looks pretty, and the beach is great (though covered with seaweed). Inside, however, it's unclear what the not inconsiderable fee is spent on. The thatched roof, as another reviewer suggests, quite possibly. The furniture, beds, amenities, cooking utensils, crockery, in fact just about everything else - definitely not. Being forced to sleep in a dormitory of strangers, with one person snoring louder than a jet engine, another breaking wind continuously, and a third making the sounds of unmistakable "activities" best not described here, made for an unpleasant and sleepless night. We'd been much better staying at a B&B, and next time we will.

It's the best hostel in the world - period. I've stayed here many times since I first stumbled upon it in 1999.
Location, location, location. Berneray is a magical place and the hostel has a fantastic location on this wonderful wee Island.
It's a simple hostel, no bookings are taken and the warden is part time and lives in the village.
If you miss the warden fill in the log and post your money in the honesty box.
It's 12 quid a night and great value for such a wonderful place. Where is the money spent? On the decorative thatched roof - which yes is a bit of a shame - not that I would ever want to see the wee place become 'modernised' . The thatch does look lovely but at the end of the day it's a decoration and not a real working thatch roof.
There is a multi-fuel stove (Morso Squirrel) but since the roof was insulated a few years ago it's only really needed in winter, or maybe lit now and again for a few hours to dry out boots at other times of the year.
Tae those complaining........ Perhaps it's time to stick up the old sign, "Please do try to leave the hostel in better condition than you found it".
If you are looking for spotless modern all mod cons accommodation, then this is not for you. But if the idea of a 'luxury' bothy with spades of character appeals in an absolutely outstanding location, then you will not be disappointed.
Oh, an undercurrent of violence, says Bill S. Ah think somebody wis pullin yer leg Bill.

Having biked almost 50 miles from Howmore, it was so nice to arrive at the Berneray hostel - what a stunning location! Yes, it is basic, however, I found the kitchen more than adequate and the bunk rooms ideal. There were travellers from Australia, New Zealand, Italy, England and Scotland and we had a great night listening to interesting tales. Like me there were quite a few cyclists, so it is good to know that others enjoy this kind of experience. It is so handy for the ferry over to Leverburgh - so all in all, this is hostel worth visiting.

I was staying as part of a trip round the Western Isles and I was really glad I ventured here to stay before I made my way to Skye. The facilities were fine and seemed to be adequate for those staying (quite a few). Had a few drams with some fellow campers and the warden in the evening - before staggering off towards a ceilidh in the village hall. Would recommend it - seems like you can socialise as much or as little as you like and there's a HUGE amount of cooking utensils in the kitchen!

Whilst on a cycling trip around North Uist, 2 friends and I stayed at this hostel. As you are unable to pre-book we popped in as soon as we got off the ferry from Leverburgh in the morning and reserved ourselves some bunks. There is no permanent warden so payment can be made to the honesty box.

The situation of this hostel is magical, it is quiet, with no road beside it and it is right on the beach. I enjoyed the rythmic sound of waves on the shore and the ever changing views, the sense of peace was tangible.

The accommodation is more basic than some hostels and that is reflected in the price. We knew to bring bedliners with us and the beds were comfortable. The kitchen/dining/sitting room is a reasonable size and the kitchen is well stocked with utensils etc. There are no condiments, tea, coffee or the like provided so make sure you arrive with supplies. There is a general store a few minutes back down the road towards the ferry, which is open until 8.00pm.

The hostel comprises of 2 old "black houses", one has one 6 bedded dorm "The Penthouse Suite" and the kitchen living area. The other has 2 more dorms, a toilet with a basin and another toilet and shower. There is also an area behind the hostels that can be used for camping and the facilities can be used by the campers also. If the hostel was full I can imagine there being queues for the bathroom, but it was fine for us with the hostel just half full.

A wood/coal burning stove in the kitchen living room is available should you wish heat or need to dry clothing on the pulley.

To sum it up, a basic hostel, full of character in a beautiful setting.

Room Tip: Rooms beside kitchen might be noisy if folk stay up late, and you have to go the the other building...
