“Secret Tansylvania. What an experience!”
Reviewed March 2, 2011

This place is just Amazing with a capital A! What an experience! It was loads of fun being in a large group but I definitely plan to go back with my wife and son next year!
We'll be staying again with Di and Jez of Secret Transylvania. You only have to read their other reviews (46 excellent!) for their guest house in Cisnadioara village to realise they are undeniably the best! Booking couldn't have been easier and the price seemed to good to be true (but it was!). They met us at Tirges Mures airport and transferred us to their village guest house for dinner, then drinks in the Lancaster Pub. The next morning we had a very full English breakfast (and believe me we can all eat a lot!) then we're taken to the ASTRA open-air museum. After a hot lunch back at the ranch (Di's cooking is beyond compare by the way) we set off for the 40min drive to the mountain road that took us up to the cable car. We had a whole afternoon to walk and explore the unique surroundings, then had dinner in the chalet style restaurant. The food was very good and again the prices were unbelievable. I hate to think what a similar experience in Sweden would have ended up costing us all! After dinner there was a huge bonfire and fireworks but I think this was part of a special festival. We then went and had hot wine, shots and cocktails in the Ice Hotel bar, after which we settled down for a much more comfortable night then I had imagined. In the middle of the night I got up to use the nearby loo and stepping outside the stillness and stars were incredible. The next morning we had lots of good hot coffee and breakfast in the restaurant again. Then had a final snowball fight before getting the cable car down to our waiting transport.
Back at the village there was another delicious lunch waiting for us. After lunch and showers and before going into Sibiu Jez took us up to the local fort where the views of the valley and mountains were spectacular. We could actually see where we had been up at the Ice Hotel, that's how near it was! Sibiu was also only 15 minutes away and has to be seen. It has been a European city of culture and we ate in the best Saxon restaurant in the centre (a la carte and all included!). We all ended up in the Atrium Jazz Club, which had great live music but we had to have our final nightcap in the Lancaster. The next day, after breakfast, we were driven back for our evening flight via Sighisoara (Dracula's birth place) and several other fortified castle/churches. This made a fasinating end to a brilliant trip. I know this has been a long review but there was just so much we packed into it. I would say this trip is a must for anyone wanting a unique, fun packed experience yet because everything was on the door step it was also strangely quite relaxing.

An amazing holiday: the most friendly and accommodating hosts you could ever wish to meet; copious amounts of excellent food (veggies very well catered for and "meat-eaters' heaven" at each mealtime); outdoor activities; history and culture, sightseeing, nature, scenery, relaxation, what more could you wish for? Weather, you ask? It was so good we swam before breakfast every morning, with the forested mountains, steep red old rooftops and white churches for surroundings. Accommodation, did you say? As stated elsewhere on the site, it's very comfortable, the staff are lovely and the ever-open Lancaster bar just what you need on a hot day and for chilling out in the evenings.

This was the first visit to Romania for two generations of adults with differing interests (one set in their early 20s, the other in their 50s), yet we all had a brilliant time. What is there to do? We all enjoyed everything but each of us would choose a different highlight. Between us, our special things not to be missed are: the lovely old city of Sigishoara plus the general impression of "being in a living museum" for a week; the cycle trip through the Sadu valley (which was "like cycling through the Astra Museum"); the bear watching - we saw 14 bears, including mothers with this year’s cubs - you mustn't wear mosquito repellent so cover up to protect yourself against mosquitos; and the horse ride/cart ride through the Transylvanian countryside seemingly untouched by the 20th century.

Just wonderful. We each intend to return which says it all! Di and Jez ensure that there's something for everyone and look after you so well it's just an amazing place to holiday. Give it a go!

We've never been looked after so personally before, nothing was too much trouble, from food likes and dislikes to choosing what activities we wanted to do. Jez and Di make a wonderful team, Jez is the activities guide taking you around the beautiful countyside - we saw a herd of wild boar rush past just 10 minutes into the walk on the first day. Di's cooking is delicious, using local produce the food is fresh, flavoursome and plentiful. Our room was basic but more than adequate with plenty of soft towels and hot water, "The Lancaster" pub an enjoyable meeting space to gather prior to and after meals. Close to Sibiu we spent time in the local area and further away finding out about the history and culture of Romania. Its difficult to pick a best part of our holiday as it was all so enjoyable, so much that we hope to make a return trip

Nothing is too much trouble for Di and Jez. They are wonderful hosts. The small city of Sibiu is truly exquisite as is Di's cooking and Jez's countryside knowledge. Horrendous litter and poverty in the countryside and a sweet church clock rings on the hour and half hour nearby. Would I go there again? YES. Thanks Di, thanks Jez.

This is my second visit to Jez and Di. The guest house is in a lovely village and is a great base for exploring the local area. Jez and Di are great and nothing is too much trouble. The food is delicious and plentiful. The Lancaster Pub is a great place for meeting other guests and the curry and quiz night is not to be missed - great fun! I have had a great time during both visits and have seen some wonderful places of interest. One of the best trips was to Bran Castle and on the way there Jez found a lovely place where we all had a picnic which Di had prepared.
Looking forward to my next visit in 2011!

We stayed with Di and Jez last year and this return visit matched all our expectations. Di's cooking remains superb and Jez is a terrific guide to the countryside. .Nothing is too much for them. It's possible to follow a set itinerary or to do one's own thing but whatever choices you make, you can be sure of a relaxing and stimulating week. The countryside is superb and Di and Jez have good contacts with local Romanians which means that you have the opportunity of gaining insight into the local culture. We certainly hope to return for another visit sometime in the future.

If you are trying your hand at an adventure holiday but with the safety of being looked after, try this company.
Between both Jez your guide and his wife Di (fantastic cooking) you will get a holiday that you will remember for all the right reasons.
Located right in the mountains but in the village, you have a choice of accomodation of self catering or your own apartment. Both allow you the use of their new swimming pool (summer temps can be 40degs) and Jez's English pub that he has built into the cellar.
Guided days out with Jez are cusomised to your needs and capability, then in the evening it's back to base and lovely banquet style dinner. Or you can choose to eat out which is included in the price!
Alternative if it's too hot you can just chill by the pool all day.
Another nice choice is the optional use of their apartment in the beautiful historic city of Sibiu, right by the city's main square. This place is serious history but at the same time has endless outdoor cafes and bars, very infectious as the place is so laid back.
With this holiday it's worth noting the exchang rate, its most generously in your favour to the extent of being silly at time of writing (once you are there it's cheap), and the other thing is it's relativley new to tourism so you feel like pioneers.
All in all a great place with the best hosts.
