This place is just Amazing with a capital A! What an experience! It was loads of fun being in a large group but I definitely plan to go back with my wife and son next year!
We'll be staying again with Di and Jez of Secret Transylvania. You only have to read their other reviews (46 excellent!) for their guest house in Cisnadioara village to realise they are undeniably the best! Booking couldn't have been easier and the price seemed to good to be true (but it was!). They met us at Tirges Mures airport and transferred us to their village guest house for dinner, then drinks in the Lancaster Pub. The next morning we had a very full English breakfast (and believe me we can all eat a lot!) then we're taken to the ASTRA open-air museum. After a hot lunch back at the ranch (Di's cooking is beyond compare by the way) we set off for the 40min drive to the mountain road that took us up to the cable car. We had a whole afternoon to walk and explore the unique surroundings, then had dinner in the chalet style restaurant. The food was very good and again the prices were unbelievable. I hate to think what a similar experience in Sweden would have ended up costing us all! After dinner there was a huge bonfire and fireworks but I think this was part of a special festival. We then went and had hot wine, shots and cocktails in the Ice Hotel bar, after which we settled down for a much more comfortable night then I had imagined. In the middle of the night I got up to use the nearby loo and stepping outside the stillness and stars were incredible. The next morning we had lots of good hot coffee and breakfast in the restaurant again. Then had a final snowball fight before getting the cable car down to our waiting transport.
Back at the village there was another delicious lunch waiting for us. After lunch and showers and before going into Sibiu Jez took us up to the local fort where the views of the valley and mountains were spectacular. We could actually see where we had been up at the Ice Hotel, that's how near it was! Sibiu was also only 15 minutes away and has to be seen. It has been a European city of culture and we ate in the best Saxon restaurant in the centre (a la carte and all included!). We all ended up in the Atrium Jazz Club, which had great live music but we had to have our final nightcap in the Lancaster. The next day, after breakfast, we were driven back for our evening flight via Sighisoara (Dracula's birth place) and several other fortified castle/churches. This made a fasinating end to a brilliant trip. I know this has been a long review but there was just so much we packed into it. I would say this trip is a must for anyone wanting a unique, fun packed experience yet because everything was on the door step it was also strangely quite relaxing.
