“A wonderful experience - well worth a visit”
Reviewed November 16, 2009

We have returned today from a brief break with Di and Jez in their rural retreat in the heart of Transylvania. They are the perfect hosts and were able to send us off to interesting places each day, recommending restaurants (very cheap high quality food) when we did not sample Di's excellent cusine. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis in one of the village houses and Jez and Di came down to cook breakfast for us before sending us to investigate the fantastic scenery and buildings that this area of Romania has to offer. On 2 of our 4 night stay, we had a delicious 3 course home cooked meal with free wine and pre dinner drinks. We then went into "The Lancaster" for more alcohol at very reasonable prices before walking back to our accommodation. The evening horse and cart ride that you arranged for us was an experience that we are unlikely to forget! We hope the horse has recovered!
Thank you both for making this a superb winter break, full of interesting facts and visits. Your pre visit emails were always welcome and full of useful information. I am sure you will be getting even more UK visitors now there are direct flights to Sibiu.... but the drive to Cluj was fascinating.
This is a very good value for money experience as Romania is outside the Euro zone and prices are amazingly cheap (£40 - £50 for a 2 course restaurant meal with wine and other drinks for 4 people! - just over £10 per head!)

Secret Transylvania is a hidden gem! ;-) We've been very slack not writing this review earlier, but just wanted to say this place is THE place to stay near Sibiu. Di and Jez are fantastic hosts! The rooms are charming, impeccably clean and everything you could want. The village of Cisnadioara is very cute! Di's cooking is just amazing!
We ended up emailing so many questions to Di before our visit and every one of them was answered promptly and helpfully! The pool that had just been put in then looks superb and we love The Lancaster! ;-) Doris is a charming guide and we loved our day trip with her. The horse riding Di recommended in Plod was some of the best we've ever done. We loved our time in Romania and have many fond memories during our short stay in Cisnadiora - it was over all too quick! We hope to be able to come back one day and stay longer ;-) We'd definitely recommend staying here and indeed have just suggested to some friends to come and stay and they've booked for December. Thanks for an awesome time!

We stayed with Jez and Di at the end of September and it was one of the best holidays ever. Right from the start of the booking everything went smoothly and even though we had to change our dates a few times nothing was too much trouble for Di.
We stayed for a week and managed to see lots of truly fantastic places in that short time. Jez was a very knowledgeable and entertaining guide and also an excellent landlord of the Lancaster Bar!
The area is lovely and there are so many things to do ranging from mountain walking to visiting beautiful old churches, enchanting villages, beautiful Sibiu and best of all - we saw bears!
The accommodation was first class and the food………………! What can I say? Di is just the best cook! You really could do no better than stay here with this great couple.
To sum it up – this is such a wonderful experience; it’s like going back into the past and I would highly recommend anyone to stay at Secret Transylvania.

Jez and Di are the perfect hosts, they can't do enough for you and make sure your trip is a highly memorable one. Di is a fantastic cook and you feel like you have known her for years, Jez is very knowledgeable and will go out of his way to make sure you get the most out of your trip.
Make sure you try the local drink...Silva black....and Di's mulled wine.
Accommadation was fantastic, you will wake up to cows wandering past your window in the morning followed by a top breakfast and a very exciting day ahead.
A trip my family and myself would like to do again.highly recommended!

First came across Secret Transylvania on website about a year ago when browsing through holiday options and immediately thought this sounds as if it will be an interesting holiday. A couple of e-mails to Di to clarify a few things we wanted to find out about and Di felt like a friend I'd known for years. Very good help given with information about flight options and very flexible with booking dates, great that we didn't have to work to fixed one week dates - happy to look at short breaks or longer trip. We opted for two weeks in end so we could visit places and still have a few lazy days. Holiday was quickly booked and impressed that Di checked with us shortly before we travelled to see if there was anything we didn't like to eat, not that there was! Think everything has been said about Di's cooking, we'd certainly endorse praise given by others.
What else really made this holiday special that hasn't already been said? Really it was all about everyone wanting us to enjoy our holiday. Jez is an unsung star, helping with whatever needed doing, organising trips, giving advice, not to mention encouraging us to sample the guest's bar (prices very reasonable). Helping Jez and Di at times while we were there were Doris, Gabby and Nulitsu - all very helpful and keen to ensure we enjoyed our holiday. Their English was far far better than our Romanian - indeed better than our English at times. We did find that a few words in Romanian to anyone was really appreciated and once we'd done that people in the village in particular made us really welcome, though we then had to rely on them being able to speak English to hold a conversation. Like everywhere though people appreciate you making the effort.
Other things? Its a rural village so things are very casual and you don't need to dress up, though Sibiu is a very cultural city with a range of cafes and restaurants - there is also a nice restaurant just 15 mins walk from the village you stay in, so do have chance to dress up for an evening out if you want. Prices locally are very good value if eating out for a change of scene, though Di's cooking kept drawing us back.
Weather very good when we were there, though it can go from very hot to very cold depending on time of year so suggest you search Weather Underground site on the web and key in Sibiu and you can look up history of weather month by month for previous years to decide best time for you.(site one we use for any trip we are planning).
Why come? Romania has a wonderful family based culture, plenty of places to see, wonderful countryside, welcoming people. Though poor people are very friendly. Many traditional ways of life exist but the country is starting to modernise so seeing the old ways (especially re farming) before they start to disappear is something we really enjoyed. Lots of walks available and we were given options to suit our confidence - we passed on the high mountain walks although others staying really enjoyed those.
Sorry its a long review but all four of us put this amongst out favourite holidays and we do manage three or four each year.

I really can't imagine that there ware many things that Jez and Di could fail to provide. Beautiful rooms, fantastic food, perfect settling, tours to suit your needs, this place really does have it all! Cisnadioara is really stunning, Jez and Di seem to have acquired 'local' status and from the second you arrive you seem to be welcomed into their world not just a tourist service. If you are looking for lengthy hikes through the jaw dropping mountains Jez seems more than keen to point you in the right direction or take you himself. If its historical trip you want the Saxon towns trip meant that we got to see sigtisora as well as the timeless Saxon towns on the way, something we'd have never managed by ourselves. Sibu is just down the road and well worth a visit and being just out of the city feels like you can balance it just to your liking whether you want to feel like you are on a rural retreat or within touching distance of some city culture. If you want a truly unique experience Doris runs fantastic mushroom picking trips and the spoils are then cooked to perfection. The food is delicious and made with a lot of thought and care and if all that wasn’t enough they have turned their cellar into a British pub! 'The Lancaster' is a brilliant bit of fun a completes a holiday which will mold itself to just what you need. Thank you :)!
