We have just returned from a holiday staying with Di and Jez in Cisnadioara an i would like to say a big thank you to them both, they were the best host and hostess we could have asked for.
Nothing was to much trouble, i am vegetarian and Di came up with some amazing meals for me, she deserves a Michelin star.
We were taken out on trips every day (and have now come home for a rest) you dont have to do all or any of the trips but as we were only there for a week we wanted to see as much as possible, their local knowledge is second to none and we did ask a lot of questions!
We had a fantastic time and are now saving up for next year.......

I've always enjoyed planning our family holidays, from researching destinations to booking the travel and accommodation and getting us all there and back in one piece... However last year we spent two wonderful weeks being utterly spoilt by Jez and Di, and the rest of the gang at Secret Transylvania. They made it all to easy from start to finish. In short..They have ruined us!

Try as we might, we just couldn’t settle on anything that we felt would match up to what we’d experienced with them in 2011. (Reviewed separately on this site).

Returning to the same place, especially on consecutive years is not something we usually do, but eventually we succumbed to the inevitable and excitedly signed up for another fortnight of their superb brand of hospitality.

During our first stay in 2011 we covered a lot of ground and saw most of the major points of interest, i.e. Sighisoara, Bran Castle, Mud Baths, Bear Watching, Poinari Castle, Transfagaras Highway as well as things closer to home such as the Astra open air museum, Sibiel glass icon museum and of course Sibiu itself.

This time we didn’t want to repeat the same trips and decided that we’d like to take it all a bit easier and spend a more time relaxing by the pool, reading etc.. (never more than 2-3 hours of course, cos we don’t do that sort of thing).
Our bespoke itinerary included local walks, as well as one spectacular ridge walk in the high Transfagaras mountains.
Cycling down the Sadu valley past herds of wandering and wallowing water buffalo.
Quad biking, Shooting/archery, Power Kiting and trips out to castles, monasteries and of course the old Transylvanian speciality, fortified churches.
The Mystery Tour was also very, very, special but I’m sworn to secrecy I’m afraid... If you are “lucky” it might rain one day whilst you’re there and you will get a real surprise!

For those of you “in the know”, Jez is a keen Geocacher and the local countryside is and ideal playground for seasoned pro’s and interested newbies alike. The Landrover makes a great cachemobile... Check out GC3TRKG on www.geocaching.com

Of course one of the main things that we returned for is Di’s cooking.. Seriously good and seriously large portions .. I once said in jest to Jez, “Two words Jez..Portion Control”.. he replied “Two words Dave..Not Interested” Having said that it is always delivered to the table for you to dish out for yourself, so portion control is really your own responsibility.. So bring plenty of will power.

We couldn’t possibly return for a third time, could we?

Do we have a choice?!?!?

This part of Romania is a heady mix of beautiful wooded hills, a stunning mountain backdrop, peasant life that has hardly changed for centuries and wonderful Saxon architecture. It's also quite a culture shock if you're used to slick-running Western European destinations, so there's no better way to dip your toe in the water than having your hand held a little by Jez and Di. They'll really look after you, introducing you to the sights, taking you to far-flung places that no public transport could reach and going out of their way to devise a personal itinerary just for you. We like walking - we had three excellent, accompanied hikes (including a chairlift ride, adored by the kids if not by me!). We love birdwatching - we were taken to see Bee Eaters. We felt like relaxing - we had a lazy day touring local villages & churches and reading by the pool. We spent a happy day at the Astra open air museum where ancient buildings from all over Romania have been preserved in a village-like park, visited the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (aka Dracula) and enjoyed the stunning buildings and museums of Sibiu. Jez and Di are so friendly and knowledgeable; Di's cooking is second to none and Jez runs a friendly bar where cold beer is always to hand - necessary in the searing August heat! Nelutu deserves a special mention too, quite the nicest and safest driver in Romania. Many thanks for a splendid week from the Gough family. The only thing on our list that we didn't experience was some local music, so we'll have to return one day when there's a Festival on!

Room Tip: You can stay in the main house, or on the other side of the village in a very comfortable and charac...

We have been coming to Romania for a dozen years now as we support some abandoned children in Transylvania . Consequently we don't travel much but have recently started to branch out from our base in Tirgu Mures . The area around Di and Jez's Secret Transylvania
guest house is just splendid .. It it just amazing that this corner of Europe, which is so breathtakingly beautiful and makes Switzerland and Austria look quite puny ,
Is still so unknown and so unspoilt .
Having praised the region , I can now praise where hopefully you who read this will choose to stay ..
We found this place on Trip advisor and were lucky enough to get in on a cancellation at the last minute for a weekend . 2 Romanians and 2 Brits , sharing a lovely very clean and well equipped cottage in a very pretty village
( incidentally with a great restaurant in the village .. Quite amazing for Romania )
We did not go on an all - inclusive basis
but I would thoroughly recommend anyone visiting Romania for the first time to do this , Romania is not the easiest country to get around in , although this is changing rapidly , but it seems to me that Jez and Di ( who used to volunteer in a local orphanage ) know their surroundings so well and you really would have such a brilliant holiday with them . In fact we will definitely return ourselves and do an all inclusive ..
We didn't see the rooms in the main house ( but we used the lovely pool and drank in Jez's great little " pub " ) and we didn't get to try Di's food ( next time ! )
but the people staying there told us how
happy they were with both rooms and food ....
Take it please from someone who knows
the best and the worst in Romania , Secret Transylvania guest house and what the owners are doing could not be bettered... Choose this one ...

We loved this holiday! The Secret Transylvania team enable you to get a real taste of the region, with such a variety of activities and experiences. A great strength of the ST experience is the ease of accessibility to the activities - Jez or Nelutu were always available to get you around, and have a wealth of knowledge at their disposal, and could translate for us or guide us as needed. The area we travelled around over the week was really big, allowing us to see so much more than if we were just on our own. As well as gorgeous rural walks in meadows, small villages, and mountains, we visited stunning citadels, castles and churches, and urban centres such as the beautiful Sibiu. We saw bears deep in the woods (wonderful!) and floated in the salt lakes. All this exciting activity was balanced with ample time to chill out by the pool back at the guest house and enjoy a drink in the sun, or time to explore areas on our own such as Sibiu and Sighisoara. Di and Jez (and Nelutu and Doris!) really do work hard to look after you, and they are considerate, friendly, helpful and informative. We ate soooo well - Di's cooking surpasses most restaurants- it really is that good, and Jez always made sure we had what we wanted and were happy. We also got chance to eat out in Sibiu and other places and try traditional Romanian cuisine, which was such a great experience. In all, Secret Transylvania allowed us to see a special part of the world that is a little off the usual well beaten tourist track, and enabled us to do this with ease, with accessibility to a wide variety of things, and with all our meals and needs extremely well catered for. We feel like we've had a really amazing experience, so much more than just a holiday. Thanks guys for looking after us so well, we miss it already! Neil and Amy.

Before I retired I worked for the best part of 50 years in the Travel & Tourism industry. In all my experience I have never come across an establishment or operation that offers such a high degree of contentment. You are greeted with a warm welcome. Nothing is too much trouble. The food is marvelous. Jez & Di go overboard in trying to manage the 'mix' of clients and ensuring that everyone is doing what they want to do. More important they make sure that everyone knows what there is available so they can decide what they want to do. Each evening your breakfast order is taken for anything from tea and toast to a sumptuous full English breakfast.
The countryside and scenery is simply magical.
I would recommend Secret Transylvania to anybody, but do please keep it a secret.

Room Tip: If possible ask for the pool room, but all rooms are wonderful.
