I don't know what it is about Shetland, but we were constantly finding rainbows following us everywhere. Staying at Westayre B&B was truly like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow as well. Of course finding the pot of gold is a part of an adventure and finding Westayre may seem a bit like wandering the Shire, as we drove the single lane road to it's very end. Along the way we encountered numerous cars rushing at us - rushing as it turns out to the Sunday tea and soup. This event seems to turn Muckle Roe traffic into a rush hour, but it's all very well mannered!

On reaching Westayre B&B, you notice the wonderful gardens created by Elsie and the extraordinarily picturesque views out over the sea. The rooms are large and mine on the first floor with en-suite facilites was excellent, the bed very comfortable, and the courtesy tray well stocked. Elsie is very kind and on our second day at Westayre we met Elsie's husband, Iver, who is a wonderful gentleman with a superb understanding of the history of the island. I can't overstate how our conversations with Elsie and Iver made our excellent stay at Westayre, even more special and heartfelt.

The breakfast at Westayre is superb and I would recommend the walk out to the Muckle Roe lighthouse to get an understanding of the island and it's lochen studded moorland. Also highly recommended is finding the old ruined mill and getting it's history from Iver along with his stories about his days as a merchant seaman. There is also an excellent collection of books and video's to explore.

At the end of our stay at Westayre, I had simply fallen head over heels with Muckle Roe and the very homely home that is Westayre at the end of the road. Very highly recommended and quite special. You won't be disappointed.

Westayre B&B is at the very end of the road, about 12 minutes drive from Brae - not at all where my Google map put it. The view from here is superb and hiking paths start from the driveway.
There are beautiful gardens. Mrs. Wood was wining prizes for her flowers at the local fair the day we arrived. Our ensuite room was large and comfortable. There was a library of local lore in the lounge and OS maps as well. The owners know the area well. One caveat - we travelled with a friend who discovered her bathroom was upstairs - not what she wanted in the middle of the night. However the room was changed and she loved the new one.

Room Tip: Not all rooms are ensuite. Avoid the single room downstairs - bathroom is upstairs.

Everything you could want here from a b and b - great service from Elsie and lovely breakfasts.

We didn't have a very good ferry crossing from Orkney and rang early in the morning of our booking to see if we could book in early. Elsie checked us in just after 11am which was excellent as we could have a lovely rest in the comfy bed.

We had the pleasure of staying here for just one night in June, what a lovely place, spotlessly clean, stunning views, lambs and sheep in the fields all around, and if you decide to go Kayaking with Seakayakingshetland we ended up launching from here a day or so after. Needless to say we got to enjoy the fabulous view from above and below the cliffs. Breakfast was lovely and Elsie also dried out all our clothes after a rather drizzly walk to the Lighthouse.

My husband and I stayed here in May for three nights at the end of our two week holiday in Shetland. Elsie made us very welcome and kindly bought some gluten-free bread especially for me as I had told her I had coeliac disease when making our booking. Our room was very comfortable and clean, as was the well-stocked bathroom. Breakfast on all three days was delicious and the views from the dining room window were wonderful.

Westayre B&B is situated on Muckle Roe which I thought was the nicest part of Shetland (and we did manage to see most of the mainland, Unst, Yell and Fetlar during our visit!). We loved the spectacular scenery at Eshaness and can definitely recommend the cafe there.

We had dinner at Busta House one evening and were very impressed with the food and with the beauty of its location and beautiful gardens. Eating out is a bit of a challenge on Shetland, especially if you are vegetarian, so Busta House was a real find.

Elsie's gardening skills are very impressive and she has created a very lovely garden around her home, especially with the challenge of Shetland's low temperatures and windy conditions.

We would definitely recommend Westayre B&B and doubt you'd find anywhere better on Shetland. Might be best to book up well in advance as Elsie told us she had no vacancies for several months while we were there. We're not surprised!
