“Wonderful sea views and a three minute walk to the beach.”
Reviewed November 8, 2016 for a stay in October 2016

Westfield is very comfortable and full of character but what we liked the most were the wonderful sea views. Mealtimes were a pleasure as we watched little fishing boats and the ever-changing Kintyre Peninsular. A three minute walk took us to the beach for a short stroll or we could follow the Arran coastal path over fascinating rock formations. A drive of ten or fifteen minutes took us to a wide range of walks - remote lochans, the King's Cave and the Fairy Dell. After a day in the fresh air it was lovely to get the wood burning stove going and relax . The house was really comfortable and attractive - wish I had a kitchen like that!
Oh, and the head chef recommends a slow pot roast in the Rayburn!
Wildlife notes: loads of seals, stags locking antlers on the golf course, an eagle being mobbed by ravens and possible otter footprints on the beach. A neighbour says he often sees otters in the field in front of the house. And two red squirrels in the back garden.

We had a fantastic week on Arran! We stayed in Westfield which was, quite frankly, disappointing. If you are holidaying with toddlers I would think twice about this cottage. It is right on the road (& I mean on the road) & the back garden is very steep & can only be accessed via a side door in the living room. The welcome pack was a bottle of red wine & some chocolates which isn't much use when you have children and for over £1000 a week was very surprising! Also, given the amount this cottage costs I was very surprised to note that it looks as if it has been given a quick lick of paint to spruce up what actually is quite a dated cottage, there were still walls unfinished with poly filler on them!!! The shower was shocking & very temperamental! If you're a party of adults bear in mind there is only 1 bathroom and no downstairs loo! The kitchen however is very well stocked! All in all disappointing given the price. The marketing of this property is very good, it isn't quite what it appears. I most definitely wouldn't recommend this cottage to those with young children! Arran on the other hand is fantastic with bundles of things to do for everyone!!

Dear Mr. Erskine,
We are very sorry that you found Westfield House disappointing and greatly appreciate the time you have taken to write your review, since it is only through honest feedback that we can strive to improve the quality of the service we aim to provide.
When you visited our website prior to booking, you would have seen plenty of photographs illustrating the layout of the property and garden, together with an interactive Googlemap showing Westfield’s location. The garden can be accessed from both the front as well as the side door and photographs on our website clearly show the steps leading up to the grassed area behind the house, from where you can enjoy panoramic views across the Kilbrannan Sound. On our website, we also state “You can request a bus stop directly outside Westfield”, which should have alerted you to the fact that Westfield is on the main road. The safety of our guests is always uppermost in our minds and we made certain that because of Westfield’s location near the road, the side gate was secure to prevent potential accidents with little ones. Our future plans have already addressed additional secure access to the garden from the front door and will be implemented in time for next season.
The wine and chocolates are not a “Welcome pack”, but a gift which has been appreciated by previous guests, whether or not they had children in their party. We have holidayed in rented cottages for the past thirty years, so pride ourselves on “going the extra mile” by supplying a great number of items not normally provided in holiday lets, such as a selection of teas, coffee, cooking oil and basics, such as spices, flour, rice, pasta and oats, plus dishwasher and washing machine powders, kitchen rolls, foil and storage containers. Your comment about the “well-stocked” kitchen is appreciated.
Regarding your opinion that the property is “dated”, when you read the overview of the house on both TripAdvisor and our own website, you would have seen we describe Westfield as a “traditional” home, by which we mean that being over 100 years old and sympathetically restored, it gives a balance of character, charm and a certain “quirkiness”, which we feel adds to its appeal. All our renovations are completed thoroughly, with care and attention and certainly do not constitute “a quick lick of paint”. Our rolling plan of improvements meant that, unfortunately, there were a few patches of Pollyfilla on the landing wall, which was scheduled to be painted the week you booked the property. Since you were very keen to make your booking, which was at the last-minute, we did not want to let you down. However, we didn’t think the wall merited special mention prior to your booking.
The shower is brand new. It was fitted a couple of months ago and when we stayed at Westfield ourselves, just three weeks ago, it was working perfectly. We can think of no reason why you found it “shocking” and “temperamental”, but are having it inspected this afternoon.
We are puzzled as to why you thought there was a downstairs toilet, when there is no mention of this anywhere?
Regarding the price of the property, our rental cost, based on the number of rooms, facilities and number of bathrooms is on a par with similar properties on Arran. When your damage surety has been refunded, your rental will be well under £1,000.
In conclusion, we would like to thank you once again for the time and trouble you have taken in giving your feedback, all of which has been noted, with a view to improving the facilities and service we want to provide for our future guests. We hope we have addressed all the points you have raised in your comments.
With kind regards,
Simon and Louise Nottage
