Best Sunday Roast!

Perfect combination of attentive staff, lovely setting, great food and good atmosphere. Perfect location for a relaxing Sunday afternoon roast with the best roast potatoes ever! You can tell everything is freshly prepared and there is such attention to detail with the decorative touches, great food presentation and delicious homemade desserts. Have visited previously for a birthday and can cater for large parties as well smaller tables. Great place to visit, will be back.

Our visit got of to a good start due to the warm friendly welcome we received. My wife had the fishcake with hollandaise sauce and a poached egg. I had ham egg and chips. Both were very very good. The ham was really nice thick cut and the chips were superb, crispy on the outside and fluffy in. We both had a glass of red wine which was very nice. It was very pleasant sitting there with a lovely log fire, all in all a very enjoyable lunch.

My pal summed it up...and it really is true, isn't it? The enjoyment of a meal is 50% the food and 50% the atmosphere and the service. Such it was on a rainy Sunday in October at the Hampshire Arms in lovely Crondall. It was our first visit, stimulated by the need for a country walk beforehand and prompted by the pal's lady wife knowing the chef/owner as a friend of a friend. We arrived late - too much talking and too many muddy fields (though we did phone a warning) - but were immediately spotted upon entry, told where our table was, asked whether it would suit us, and invited to order drinks. Pal asked about the beers and was immediately invited to sample (one star already!) and the available wines by-the-glass were carefully described. Our round table was perfect for four and the drinks arrived quickly. We all ordered the beef - it was Sunday - and the waiter was honest in pointing out that chef has just taken an order for a party of seven so there may be a slight delay. Happily, the delay was not long enough for finger drumming, and it was worth the wait. Maybe the beef was a little on the tough side, but it was served with a smile, with excellent and interesting vegetables including Hasselhoff, Hasselblad or somesuch potatoes (basically roasties that been half sliced like a mini toast rack) and, the crowning glory and the 5th star, a good sized full boat of extra gravy.
Desserts were also excellent - chocolate parfait was parfait, as was the apple pie and all caringly but not overelaborately presented. The service continued to be caring without being intrusive and we left feeling our custom (and our stomachs) had been valued, and that we would return. Which is the point of it all really, isn't it!

We attended a wedding reception, Marquee in the garden magnificently decorated. It started with Pimms or Beers and a great selection of hot and cold canapés on the decking followed by the sit down lunch and desert, the food was fantastic, served quickly and efficiently. The wine flowed quite well too!
Enjoyed it so much we went for Sunday lunch, the roasted potatoes were to die for and the beef simply melted in the mouth, eyeing up other diners chips looked pretty special too.
