Dubare Elephant Camp
Reviewed May 29, 2014

We planned a visit to this elephant camp at the very last moment. The original plan was to drive directly to Coorg from Bangalore. The plan changes a bit when we managed to find a cottage for a night. The resort was sold out for the remainder of the weekend. The camp is located approximately 5 hours by road from Bangalore. The drive ends in a dead end at the banks of the Cauvery. You will be taken to the property by boat from the car park.
Similar to all Jungle lodges, the property is large and set amidst serene surroundings with gurgling sounds from the river. The cottages are simple, large and efficient. Given the fact that the same group of people are responsible for serving food, taking you for safari & nature walks as well as maintaining the elephant camp there are fixed timings for every activity. It is advised that guest remain sensitive to that.
A one night itinerary looks something like this.

Day 1

1. Arrive by noon at the camp. Followed by lunch.
2. Tea early in the evening followed by a safari into the nearby reserve forest. Do note, that this is not a sanctuary like Bandipur or Kabini. Hence, animal sightings may be fairly restricted.
3. Camp fire followed by dinner. Food is simple, but served fresh and delicious. Retire for the night.

Day 2

1. Start early and head into the forest for a walk with the naturalist.
2. Have breakfast and head for a coracle ride on the river. After rains, coracles are replaced by white water rafts due to increased flow in the river.
3. Head to the elephant camp and spent a quality hour or two engaging in the following activities. Bathing elephants in the river, feeding and riding them.
4. Check out.

Kids would love this place as there is a lot of open space to run about. Not to mention, you could bathe in the gentle stream during summer. One thing that ticked me off was the littering of plastics in the elephant camp. The camp is also open to tourists not staying in the resort. As a result there is not control of littering, specifically plastics. Sometimes I feel that we Indians just do not deserve what nature has offered us. We absolutely lack any respect to us or our surroundings.

Overall, Dubare elephant camp offers a quick getaway from Bangalore and offers good value for you money.

Dubare elephant camp was great fun for our family. We had come here with 3 families including 6 kids. They had a ball. the resort is very clean and picturesque. the service is very good. Food is simple and tasty. The experience of bathing elephants is unforgettable for kids. The family hammock is also a unique concept here. The other interesting experience is the coracle ride on the cauvery.
While there are not many animals in the jungle around, the jeep safari is still fun spotting birds and elephants.

Room Tip: The cottages are either facing the river or towards inside. We stayed in at the edge of the resort w...

This jungle camp is absolutely amazing. You would definitely enjoy the serenity, the nature walk, the safari and the elephant camp itself. The interaction with elephants at the elephant camp is a delightful experience for kids and grownup alike.
The courteousness the staff needs special mention. They are also very knowledgeable and could learn a lot about wildlife and conservation from them. For nature lovers, this makes the trip special.
The cottages are spacious and comfortable and merges well into the nature.

This is one of Jungle lodges property Its a nice scenic hide away from the hustle and bustle of any town , its a nice gateway from mechanical life of city .Bot ride to this island is a first highlight ,and elephant activity is the major attraction for children , but the safari is a bit let down as this is a dense forest animal sighting is nearly nil except for peacock. I wish they have more of animal activity and nature walk is quite educational .Other than that food, service are good and people are friendly , but for eco lodge can spiders be inside the rooms?. all in all good experience

The camp was so much more magical than we expected. You have to get a little boat over to the camp making it feel unique and special. The camp is beautiful and tranquil. The cottages are absolutely beautiful, spacious and luxurious. With hammocks and gorgeous views of the jungle riverside. The food they serve is very very good too. And if you book the package with the ju gle safari, morning walk and elephant camp experience it really makes the stay. The staff are very knowledgable and friendly. And the experiencing of washing, feeding, riding and learning about the elephants and really experiencing the up close and personal was unbeleivably amazing. The only thing i would say is you pay for your drinks on top and they charged us 500 rupees.. for what i expected to be maximum 250. So be prepared drinks of even just water .. are costly.

Being accessible only by boat makes this a really calm spot in the middle of nature and also away from the routine crowds roaming around Dubare. The property has a rustic/minimalistic feel and is located in a light forest area, making it ideal for those looking to spend a few days in touch with raw nature.

Although facilities other than room/restaurant are next to nil in the resort, the staff was very courteous and ready to accommodate any requests from our side. Rooms were comfortable and the premises are good to roam around. At this time of the year (Feb), the nearby kaveri, almost still due to low water levels, makes a very scenic view from the cottage windows.

The tariff (being per head) is a bit expensive, but includes a few activities and a visit to the nearby elephant camp. Having said that, our safari turned out to be a real dud with a rickety jeep roaming around a dry forest with just a few peacocks and wild fowls for company. The elephant camp is probably a bit over-hyped and may not offer much for folks who are used to seeing domestic elephants elsewhere. Kids are likely to enjoy the elephant rides and the chance to give them a bath.

We stayed at Dubare Jungle Lodge for 2 nights as we wanted to get close to the elephants and this looked like the place to do it. Yes it was very expensive, made even more so by the fact that we needed 2 rooms and I am sure what we paid was totally out of all proportion to the price paid by Indians, but overall we have no regrets as this was one of the highlights of our 3 week trip.

Whilst seeing elephants with loose or tied chains is not nice, I did not get the impression that they were badly treated (similar to us keeping horses in the west). This is India, there is a lot of poverty and people and elephants have to live together, as they have done for hundreds of years.

In our package the accommodation, food and activities were all included. The lodges were adequate but not great. The food was good (all staff very friendly) but the highlight was the activities.

We had a guide called Naga assigned to us and he took us on 2 jeep safaris, a guided walk, a coracal (boat) ride, elephant bathing
and elephant ride. He was very knowedgeable and enthusiastic not just about elephants, but on all aspects of the natural envionment and this helped us to achieve a deeper understanding from our stay.

Overall I would recommend a stay at the Lodge (which is in a beautiful river side setting) rather than a day trip.
