We 3 signed up for an afternoon snorkel trip with Valentine's. The gal who works at the Shop is full of good information - many thanks to her as our golf cart broke down right there and she got it swapped out while we were out on our trip. Sean - our trip captain - was very friendly and a good teacher, especially with children... he did a nice job with our 12 year old. The Valentine's boat took off promptly at 1:30. Price was $60 each for about 2 hours on the water. We brought our own equipment. Water was cool but no wet suit needed. Sean took us to 2 different snorkel locations. See attached photo of one of the sites. This is a great activity for families with kids. Our boat had a mix of young kids (the 4 yr old sat on the boat w/her mom while her siblings snorkeled) and college students w/parents.

We went on the two-stop, <two hour boat trip with three children - all of whom enjoyed the snorkeling while other adults took two tank dives. The ride was smooth, weather perfect, and the two crew/divemasters amiable and helpful. The gear was fine - one of our kids' snorkels malfunctioned, there was a spare on board - and there's water, no sodas, on board. Both stops - first just off the South Bar, the second inside Bottom Harbor between Eleuthera and Harbour Island - afforded plenty of fish and coral, the second particularly so and shallow. The divers seemed pleased, too.

I don't know if they have changed ownership, but our experience diving with valentines dive center was excellent. I am a padi advanced diver, dive regularly here in Florida. My compantion is a recently certified padi open water diver. We had a great time diving. First morning dive was 2 tank with 6 other divers and 2 dive masters. Excellent topography of the reefs . Good life. A lemon shark and a black tip reef shark. Coral is not bad but in better shape than my recent diving in the british virgin islands. Safety was excellent and those who rented gear had very nice air2 equipped scuba pro bc's. For the second afternoon outing we did a 35' dive for 35 minutes we were the only 2 divers and they still has 2 dive masters in the water.

I don't understand why someone would take a diving course in a resort rather than at a local YMCA or scuba club. Over and over i read about bad experiences with that type of diver. Scuba is more complex than just a resort course so you should take it at home and use the excellent dive guides at valentines.

After they received payment for our scuba training course, they didn't seem concerned about much else. Our dive instructor cut the pool training portion short and we later found out that he omitted very important safety information! When we dove at the reef, the Valentines Resort boat captain/scuba instructor decided to return to the dock 45 minutes early. We saw very few fish -- certainly none of the bright tropical fish or pretty reefs that are in the advertisements. The reef was brown and the fish were tiny and dark. When we tried to talk with the shop managers about our experience, they refused to hear our feedback. Would never recommend a friend here!

First the positives: the staff is friendly and the location is beautiful. The rest of my experience was a little shady. I enrolled in the referral course to finish my PADI certification, expecting to finish my pool work and last 4 dives since I did the book work beforehand. The first day of pool training was fine. The first dive was chaotic - 18 divers, 3 instructors, and we were not assigned buddies prior to the dive. In 10 foot swells there were divers bumping into each other all over the place, its a miracle nobody was lost. The second day of pool work was a waste - the instructor for our referral group didn't show up, so the instructor for the resort (Discover Scuba) class tried to teach both groups at the same time. Needless to say, the referral group sat around for 2 hours before we even got started, then only had an hour to complete the required pool sessions 4 and 5. The last two dives were a mix - the first one we happened across 2 dolphins and a big sea turtle, but we only dived to 30 feet instead of the 70 feet we were promised. The last dive was only in a bed of sea grass at 20 feet to finish off our PADI testing.

After all this, I was told that the "referral course" price only included the open water dives, so I had to pay an extra $200 for the pool work. The safety issue is most concerning - I think they were trying to accommodate a huge crowd of divers for the New Years week, but you've either got to be extremely organized and ready to handle these numbers, or turn people away in order to maintain safety and deliver on the training you are charging for. The bottom line is: be very careful before you sign up here, find out exactly how much it will cost ahead of time, how many people you will be diving with, and avoid it if it's high season.
